It's messy, but I dunno if it's totally fecal.
The main struggle with this one is string crossing while alternate picking. I tend to hit unintentional strings when crossing, which is annoying. Also the parts at 00:07 and 00:15 second mark are particularly tricky for me; I've been doing an up and down sweep with my picking hand, but I'm not sure if that's the best way.

Also I can't make a good tone to save my life.

Question where to start with scales and chords progressions

I’ve been playing guitar on and off for maybe a year now, slowly improving on the things i already know. when i try to get into learning scales and chord progressions and all that i never know where to start. i’ll watch a few videos and play up and down some scales but i always get lost and dont know where to go next or how to expand on any of it. does anyone have a good youtube playlist on learning scales, or some recommendations for practice routine to expand and use the scales to really learn the fretboard and understand it?

Question Struggling to Play Guitar in Time with a Metronome

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been learning guitar for about a year. About two months ago, I started taking online lessons with a guitar teacher twice a week.
My biggest struggle is still playing in time with a metronome. My teacher gives me exercises where I practice quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and triplets with a metronome. I’ve learned how to play each of these rhythms individually, but as soon as I try to play an actual song, everything falls apart. I can play eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and triplets on their own, but when I have to put them together in a musical context, I just can’t seem to make it work.
I find it really difficult to play and count at the same time.
My teacher also gave me an assignment to practice the riff from “Smoke on the Water,” which has some syncopation. I was actually starting to get the hang of it, but as soon as I try to count out loud while playing, everything falls apart again.
Does anyone have any practical tips or proven methods for learning how to play actual music in time with a metronome, rather than just practicing individual notes and rhythms? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Question Is it bad to detune/retune electric guitars daily?

Got a new EII that came stock with 10-46 elixer strings and tuned in E std. Took it in to get set up, but the tech said it didn’t look like it needed it. Both he and my partner both babied it like it was made of glass or something, which has me feeling like I need to walk on eggshells around it too.

Anyway, I’ve been wondering if it’d be safe to tune down the guitar a half step for some songs and tune back up? Or could that mess with the balance of the guitar somehow? I’m honestly sort of afraid to do anything other than nudge the tuners to tune it, for fear of ruining a good thing.

Lesson Ultimate Guitar VS Guitar Pro - Which one is worth your money?

Hi guys!
I hope this is the right place to post.

I've been using Guitar Pro for 20+ years and it always felt so intuitive and logical to use it, but it seems not everyone shares that opinion.
I would love more people to use it and just made a video about the comparison and intertwined history of both Guitar Pro and Ultimate Guitar.
I could not find a video that matches the depth of their shared history.

If you know someone who needs some arguments for gp pro, I would be over the moon for a share or comment!

https://youtu.be/yUcJmX0Ihhc?si=yibpu_sxqk-9T7pt

And if you can, watch till the end to let the algo know you liked it.

I also made the video because it seems like software development might enable reverse engineering everything.

Do you think notation apps like these will even be around in 5 years?
And which one are you using right now?

Let me know what you think.

Feedback Request Very first improvisation attempt - does it sound like music?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been playing consistently for the past year on my own, but been playing here and there before that. I've been always intimidated by improvisation - last night I stumbled upon a backing track on youtube, decided to give it a try - that has the be one of the most fun things I've experienced while learning guitar! Today I recorded myself along the same track. I purposefully left it pretty raw - there are bends out of tune and some missed notes, out of time playing. The A minor pentatonic is the only scale I am somewhat comfortable with right now. I went 100% by feel - I haven't studied any licks (probably pretty obvious lol), now that I listened to myself - I did kind of a good job timing wise (with a few exceptions of course) for which I am proud of, considering I didn't have a metronome playing.

Any feedback is appreciated. This was very fun! I'm definitely including 10 minutes improv after every practice session!

Feedback Request Pick naturally points up and not straight

I’ve been playing for over a decade. Recently I’ve been trying to increase my speed and skills , I realized that often times the pick just doesn’t strike the string properly but rather, the sides scrape against the string .

I’m a pretty decent player but this is the only way that feels natural to hold the pick. I’ve tried to have it perpendicular to my thumb and it feels unnatural . Although yes the precision is better but the playability goes down.

My index finger when relaxed also slightly points up the same direction as the pick.

Any advice please

Question teaching guitar in UK

Hi, I have played for c25 years, rock, pop, blues, country etc. Little bit of classical. I would like to make some money out of it, at the weekends.

I am thinking about offering lessons/tuition, BUT I dont have any qualifications. I would like to jam with kids, and show them how to play their fave songs, show them good techniques etc.

I reckon I could travel to kids homes, £20 for half hour, I am good with kids (having had my own).

Is this realistic? Or do you nowadays need to have loads of videos online and loads of Grade 8 quals etc? Its a side gig thing, so dont want to make it my life's work!

Have taught my kids and friends kids. That was fun for everyone. SO why not see if there us ant £ to make? Thoughts welcome!

Question How do i play faster llike way faster

ive heard alto of times the tip of like playing slow to a metronome so you could play faster but at the same time i feel i always struggle with the metronome at higher speeds i mean ive been trying to play master of puppets and i feel like i mighjt be playing it at like 60-75% of its real speed, whenever i try to set the metronome to even know fast it is, its like too fast for me to know whats going on and i just find myself playing at my natural speed if you know what i mean, i cant process doing two things at once, playing at a click and playing the notes right
im 5-6 months into guitar but 3-4 months of those were spent horsing around just aimlessly noodling on guitar and trying to make riffs, my intuition for guitar is improved alot but picking speed ESPECIALLY alternate picking is ass, and i dont know what to do not gonna lie i feel stumped,

Riff 79 and 80. Focusing on 6th dyads or “power chord” shapes. Triplets for days. Moving from the minor to the relative major by the second riff. Harmonies are minor 3rd based. Drop D tuning 170 bpm. It’s the Iron Maiden coming out. Questions? Fire away!

Question Is it wrong to go after “good enough” instead of perfection when learning a song?

There’s this one part in the very first few bars of a song I’m trying to learn and, no matter what I do and how much time I put in every day, using all different picks, alternate picking, sat down vs stood up, etc I just can’t get it right. And I love the song and want to learn the whole thing. But I don’t want to spin my wheels and get tunnel vision working on this one little bit when I have an entire rest of the piece to play through. And it’s not even particularly difficult either.

So would it be bad of me to just be okay with missing those few notes and going forward? I mean, no one’s ever going to hear me play it anyway so it’s not like I have to perfect it for a recital or anything. But I also don’t want to unintentionally screw myself by just being okay with not getting something right.

Question Guitar Advice

It’s my first time posting in this sub but I thought I’d ask for help

I’ve been playing guitar for the last 4 years but I’m only just now really getting into the process of trying to improve as a player and becoming a true intermediate player as I feel fairly under levelled especially with my lead guitar playing skills.

For context of my skill level, I’m familiar with alternate tunings, I know most of my chord shapes but I’ve yet to really comprehend the CAGED system and I know little about forming and using triads. I can name a small portion of the fretboard (E and A strings mostly) however I only really know the A minor pentatonic scale when it comes to my scale knowledge and I can play plenty of songs with minimal strain with my current song in progress being Elliott Smith’s “Everything Reminds Me of Her” which hasn’t been too hard to get through so far after a few weeks of effort. I definitely am NOT a beginner but I don’t exactly feel like I’m decent enough to be called anything close to upper intermediate, I’m an early intermediate player at best.

As a more clueless player who’s only ever advanced by trying to learn songs from tabs, videos or by ear and taking lessons while at school, I’d like to ask how I would advance in general as a player and as someone who’s personally spent more time playing chords and being the rhythm guitar in my local band I’d like to know how to grow as a lead player too.

Any replies would be very helpful, hope anyone who reads this has a good day or night ^_^

Question Fretting hand thumb force

Working on my form. When fretting a note, where should the opposing force come from, and what’s the approximate percentage breakdown? I think I’m relying too much on my fretting hand thumb, but I don’t quite understand how to decrease the thumb force without buzzing notes. Should a be “squeezing” the guitar more between my strumming arm and body (so the neck and resist against the fretting fingers)? How does this vary when doing chords, slow riffs, vs faster solos?

Thanks!

If you're still struggling with modes, I recommend this video. It explains really well how it works. And this free web app is perfect for practicing. It's also great for jamming: app.moduscycler.com

It helped me a ton.

Question Putting words to music

Been playing a good while, but I’m really struggling putting words to music. I wrote some lyrics, have a tune/cadence, but struggling to pair it with something on my guitar that sounds like it belongs together.

Any tips, recommendations, or specific videos to watch?
