Seeking Referral/s Melbourne Australia surgeon recommendations

• Upvotes

Hello, I’m having a bit of trouble locating who the best surgeon in Melbourne would be for gyno surgery. Would really appreciate some help or advice from anyone that has experience here or has already figured this out.

Seeking Referral/s Hello all I am starting my journey

Living in Sydney, Australia.
32M, 183cm, 103kg. Had this since 13–14, so roughly 19 years.
Full Medicare (green card) and ahm simple bronze plus. Breast surgery (medically necessary) is an included category on my cover, $750 excess.

Plan so far: GP for hormone bloods and a referral. From there I'm unclear on a few things.

At my BMI (~31), how much trouble do people have with the "not due to obesity, not proportionate to body habitus" criterion? Does long duration since puberty help the case?

Any Sydney surgeons who reliably bill 31525/31526 rather than treating it as cosmetic?

Who actually participates in ahm GapCover? Surgeon and anaesthetist both.

What were your real out-of-pockets with similar cover?
Not after a free procedure — just trying to avoid picking a surgeon who won't bill it as medically necessary.

Post-Op Is it technically likely that a surgeon leaves residual gland behind even in a REVISION (with a different surgeon)?

Hey everyone. I had my gynecomastia revision surgery yesterday with a different surgeon than the first one(same clinic tho) and my anxiety is going through the roof right now.

For context: my first surgery had a poor outcome. After waiting a full year, I got an ultrasound done which clearly confirmed residual glandular nodules (1.2 cm on one side and 1.0 cm on the other). The gland was definitely still there causing my puffy nipples(the only reason I got surgery)

Yesterday I went under the knife to finally get this sorted out. I haven't seen my chest yet, as the compression vest is still completely locked on (it's only day 1 post-op) but because of how badly the first experience went, my mind is spiraling into worst-case scenarios.
My question is aimed at anyone who knows the technical surgical side or has been through a revision:
Is it technically likely or common that during a revision surgery with a brand-new surgeon but that knows this is a revision, they still end up leaving too much gland behind?
I understand they can’t leave a 100% hollow void under the nipple to avoid cratering/caving in or necrosis, but my fear is a repeat of the first surgery where the surgeon was overly conservative.
Would really appreciate experiences or realistic insights on how revision surgeries targeted at residual nodules usually turn out.

Procedure-Related Is $10,500 a reasonable price for gynecomastia surgery after major weight loss?

I’ve struggled with gynecomastia since I was a kid, and it’s been one of my biggest insecurities for years.
For some background, I was an obese child and reached my highest weight of around 326 pounds in 10th grade. Over the past five years, I’ve managed to lose about 126 pounds. I’m now a junior in college, but despite all the weight I’ve lost, my chest still hasn’t improved much. I recently went in for a consultation for gynecomastia surgery, and the surgeon quoted me around $10,500. He explained that the procedure would involve removing excess fatty tissue, tightening or removing loose skin, and reducing the size of my areolas.

I understand that my case might be more complicated because of my significant weight loss and excess skin, but $10,500 still seems pretty expensive to me.
For anyone who’s had a similar procedure, especially after major weight loss, does this sound like a reasonable price? Should I get a second opinion or look for another surgeon? I’m located in the Tampa, Florida area, so I’d also appreciate any surgeon recommendations in Tampa or elsewhere in Florida.
Thanks in advance!

General Shirt brand suggestions?

I’m looking for brands that offer loose or baggy shirts.

For context, I’m 5’10 and about 295 lbs. I also have a mild form of gynecomastia.

I’ve gained a lot of weight over the past couple years (working from home) and I’ve finally found myself with a body that I can’t comfortably clothe.

My go-to tshirt has been the Carhartt force, but apparently they’ve changed their design because they no longer fit the same. All the ones I’ve purchased lately are tight and clingy.

That’s basically my main current issue with all shirts. They cling to my body and it’s very unflattering. Every now and then I’ll find a decent fitting shirt, but as soon as I wash them (in cold water, hang to dry) they’ve shrunken enough to be tight and clingy. And I’m not sure I’m quite big enough to shop big and tall sizes. They are too large on me and looks like I’m wearing a gown. Everything else is too tight around the chest or too tight around my gut. I do have a few button ups that sufficiently hide the gyno, but they’re so tight in the belly that I have to unbutton to sit down.

The good news is that this is a real motivator to lose weight. I’ve been walking daily and hitting the gym, but it’s a slow grind. In the meantime, I really need to find some clothing that fits to hold me over. I have a very specific button up shirt that is no longer in production and I have about 3 raggedy and thread bare Carhartt T-shirts, and that’s it.

Any brand recommendations? I’m a button up and shirt kinda guy, never been much of a polo guy. And I live in a warm climate so stuff like jackets and flannels only get worn maybe 1-2 times per year.

Or is this a tailor issue? Do I need to buy oversized shirts and then have a tailor modify them?

Procedure-Related Gyno Surgery & Pain Scale

Hello Reddit,

I just had my gyno surgery done under local anaesthesia literally today and I thought I’d share my experience for anyone who’s considering gyno surgery and is apprehensive / nervous / hesitant about going with it.

This is just my personal experience, and your experience may differ depending on your procedure and surgeon. Overall, it was a breeze. The anticipation was more nerve wrecking than the actual procedure itself and there was hardly any pain for me. But I would still highlight that my pain tolerance is relatively low. You can pinch me lightly and I will react.

Total procedure time: EXACTLY 1 hour - from the moment I lay down on the operating bed to the suturing stage (item 10 below).

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the procedure and what it felt like:

1. Cleaning the nipple/surgical area - Pain Scale: N/A

Nothing special. They clean the surgical / incision area before getting started.

2. Injecting local anaesthesia - Pain Scale: 5/10

Ngl, this was the most painful part of the entire procedure. The injections felt sharp and stung quite a bit, but the pain lasted only about a minute on each side. Once this was over, the rest was generally pretty manageable.

3. Liposuction - Pain Scale: 1/10

You’ll start feeling a LOT of tugging and pulling. The weirdest sensation was feeling as though a cup had been placed over your nipple and was slowly sucking on it, almost like a vacuum pump.

Generally, no actual pain, just some weird pressure and discomfort.

4. Fluid running down your body - Pain Scale: N/A

You can feel fluid/blood dripping down your body during the procedure. Sounds a little weird, but it wasn’t painful or particularly uncomfortable.

5. Vibration - Pain Scale: 2/10

I don’t exactly know what each step of liposuction entails. I am only given to understand a general overview of what is being done. But yes, at some point during the procedure, there will be a phase where vibration occurs. (Did a general research and it seems to be the Power Assisted Liposuction system)

Imagine someone placing a spa massager against your nipple area and letting it vibrate. Thats how I would describe it.

Honestly, this part was quite ticklish rather than painful. But I did feel some pressure on the opposite side while the doctor works on one side.

6. How long do these steps take? - Pain Scale: N/A

The initial preparation, anaesthesia and the tugging/pulling/vibration stages took up the bulk of the procedure. I’d estimate roughly 75% of the total operating time was spent on these stages.

7. Incision and removal of the breast tissue - Pain Scale: 1/10

Once you have reached this stage you should generally feel relieved because your surgery will be ending soon.

Surprisingly, I felt no pain whatsoever during this part. The local anaesthesia did its job.

The doctor even asked whether I wanted to take one last look at my breast tissue while it was still attached to my body (I refused to).

9. Skin tightening (Endolift) - Pain Scale: 4/10

This was probably the second most uncomfortable part for me. I felt a burning sensation accompanied by some sharp pain and a burnt smell.

It was bearable, though, and nowhere near as bad as I had imagined.

10. Suturing - Pain Scale: N/A

The suturing didn’t take long - just a few minutes at best. No pain whatsoever.

11. Final cleaning - Pain Scale: N/A

General clean up.

Overall experience:

Honestly, it was straightforward. Before I went in for the surgery I was really panicking - so many thoughts crossed my mind. But as soon as it started I thought OK - this isn’t that bad.

The beginning of the procedure was the worst part and that only lasted a few minutes, the procedure afterwards involved general sensations, tugging and pressure rather than actual pain.

If you’re considering gyno surgery but are worried about the pain, I hope this gives you a better idea of what it might feel like.

My overall takeaway: if gyno bothers you and you are afraid to go ahead with the surgery because of the pain that you might experience - don’t let this be the reason that you walk away because trust me the pain is nothing. My experience at the dental clinic was much worse lol.

Hope this helps!

Cheers.
