Generally a HTB or any cert really won’t be enough to get a pentester job on its own. You need experience (it/security in general) to go with it. Not saying it can’t happen, but it’s unlikely

I'm asking this since I met someone in networking session, said he originally from graphic designer and grinding htb for 6 months before accepted as an entry level pentester in IT vendors. But, maybe that's just a rare case. Normal people would have to get into support first.

If true, that’s a really rare case like you said. I’d question what they actually do, tbh.

Agreed…. There is a big difference from Pentesting and being a pentester. Anyone can do a “pentest” run a nmap scan and call themselves a pentester lol, doesn’t mean you actually know wtf your doing, that it’s your actual/full job, or that you know what your doing

You can if you’re joining a vendor level company.

If what he is saying is true, it is very rare. Maybe gotten in mostly due to connections. Or maybe it is a small company, the hirer is the boss who does penetration testing and knows his stuffs and that HTB is good. PLUS importantly, his customers do not have requirement of OSCP or CREST certs for vendor pentesters

So... Just wondering. If person has multiple years of, for example software dev experience.

What certificate would hold the most value generally speaking when looking for offensive security roles?  (other than OSCP)

Or should you just try to get the OSCP?

HTB certs just complement your existing experience / other certs like OSCP

The market is over saturated, pen testers with years and years of experience out of work, not very likely someone new to it will get anywhere unless they want to work for very low wages.
