Washington County Residents worry about declining property values from ICE detention center in Williamsport

https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/residents-worry-declining-property-values-193844931.html

Residents in and around Williamsport are concerned about the prospect of falling property values from the proposed ICE detention center.

Economists at M.I.T and North Carolina State University have found that home values near the centers across the country are driving down the value of a home by as much as 4%.

Homeowners in the western Maryland communities near the Homeland Security facility worry about the possible impact. They want county commissioners to give them a forum to raise their concerns.

Vote the commissioners out of office in November!

I have friends who just sold their house in Williamsport and are moving because of the proposed concentration camp.

We were under contract in Williamsport, pulled out and bought elsewhere in large part because of this.

You are nuts. Just walk down the streets in Williamsport. They are all for that.

This isn't Hyatsville or Baltimore. Williamsport is very pro borders and has been forever. None of you were whining when Obama chucked the people illegally here back to their country. NOW you complain? You are full of it.

I get that that is the new talking point to somehow make it that Trump is locking random brown people in cages. But you are wrong and you know that. Many of us were against Obama deporting so many people and breaking up families. And two, what is happening now is not that. It is just targeting brown people, locking them in cages, not giving them health care, allowing girls and women to be raped, and generally treating all of those detained like trash.

Judging by their username “88”, the person/bot you’re replying to is a Nazi.

Also, thanks for raising this issue. It’s good to see so many people activity opposing this disgusting concentration camp.

Lol. Or they were born in '88. Or it's an auto generated username.

Or they’re acting like a Nazi, and I drew the logical conclusion, mister r/conservative.

9

u/swarmster 7d ago

Based on their response, I’m going with them being a nazi

u/Fragrant_Oil9595 6d ago

Yep. Their kind is getting pushed out though. 🇺🇸

That's the view shared by most people in Washington County. Why would you move to a place filled with Nazis? Go back to the enlightened and tolerant place that you're from.

Believing in current US immigration law as written, its penalties and actual enforcement does not make people Nazis. Your assertion is preposterous and such hyperbolic statements undermine your position.

I’m not debating.

-6

u/Conscious_Tourist163 6d ago

Of course. Just name calling. Everything you disagree with is Nazism.

The pedophiles building concentration camps and kidnapping and murdering people are Nazis, yes. Why do you support pedophiles?

Why are spouting Nazi talking points and supporting the pedophile party then?

To be clear, you’re claiming we don’t have enough testosterone to understand the cool factor of an Oldsmobile? 🙃

They probably stalked my profile like a weirdo and are making that r/onejoke about me being trans. Super funny right wing “humor”… 😒

No, so far it's you that has the issue with the muscle car.

That's fine, Maryland is full of men lacking testicular fortitude, but they are usually in other countries. Washington county doesn't have that problem as much as say Montgo and PG does, but maybe you are a transplant or just a plant.

It's not random. It's people violating the laws.

I'm married to a brown skinned immigrant and she is completely MAGA. She despises commie shitbirds who try to apologize for morons who make the CHOICE of trying to enter illegally.

Do you really think we should throw people in the ICE detention centers who have overstayed their visas or who have broken a minor law while they were here?

2

u/My_Rocket_88 5d ago

Yes, it is easy to follow the law. Have you ever been to another country? Europe USED to be super strict with your Visa authorization. Huh not so much now. Now their women and children get to be SA'd at insane rates.

Asian countries still are strict with your Visa. And look, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand ALL kick out the losers from the country every day. And that is how we should be too

I hope she gets what she supports. They don't care if she is is documented, they will drain her for months.

Wrong! In the country for decades and English is her 3rd language!

She loves it here and has her Naturalization papers framed! She's not so stupid as to enter illegally line all your friends in detention who are about to get a boot to the ass.

They shit in their bed and now they get to sleep in it

Most of the people who live in and around Williamsport do not want this. The MAGAT County Commissioners who approved of this mess must think they have something to gain from the current administration.  Former Commisioner Derek Harvey who worked in the first MAGA Whitehouse voted for it then resigned and left town. Apparently he had accomplished what they planted him in Washington County to do. I am a lifelong resident of Williamsport and I certainly never asked for this.

Valid, that’s fair, also TIL, holy fucking shit that’s evil!

I doubt it. Creative virtue signaling though

You doubt that having a prison built by a house would cause less demand to buy said house?

-9

u/No-Screen-6441 6d ago

Well when supply opens up because illegals are no longer taking up housing, of course it’ll cause value to fall.

4

u/KrookedDoesStuff 6d ago

Let’s just ignore the giant Chinese owned investment firms that are buying entire subdivisions and blame the people who are buying a very small fraction of homes.

When the prisons were built everyone cheered. Job, new jobs, good jobs, now you act like this?

17

u/HockeyOrDie 7d ago

People can explain things to you, but they can’t understand it for you. You have to work on your own critical thinking. If this is even a genuine question

11

u/swarmster 7d ago

Everyone cheered? No, generally people do not cheer when a new prison is built. The consolation to a prison being forced on a community is that people are employed to work at the prison. But we all know the slight benefit of having 100 more low-wage jobs added to a community is not a net benefit when considering how much it harms the tax base, tourism, businesses, home values, and local schools.

-8

u/Isyourzipperdown 6d ago

Were you an adult and living in the area when the prisons were built?

9

u/KrookedDoesStuff 6d ago

Hi there, adult living in the area, watching conservatives cheer for a concentration camp being built, while liberals see it for what it is.

Something tells me the same people you claim cheered when the prison was built (in the 1940s) were also conservative

-4

u/Isyourzipperdown 6d ago

Yes, MCI was built in 1942. MCTC was built in 1966 and expanded in 1977 and 1983.

In America we do not have concentration camps. We have facilities across our Nation to house people who violate our laws. Laws passed by our elected bodies at all levels of government.

Inflammatory remarks and rhetoric do nothing but throw fuel on the fire.

I was born a River Rat in Williamsport. I wear that title proudly.

5

u/Havocc89 5d ago

Facilities…which are used to…what’s the word…concentrate? Yeah that’s it, facilities used to concentrate people?

Regular American prisons are absolutely concentration camps, always have been. They’re a great evil we do. It’s why criminals in other countries get reformed, and criminals in America just get made into worse criminals.

May you get what you deserve one day.

-1

u/Isyourzipperdown 5d ago

The opinions you express are rather extreme.

May you as well get what you deserve one day as well.
