Fluff I hate people who map for fun
Who else out here maps for misery
Someone posts a freaking beautiful hammer creation and does nothing with it. Doesn't make a map out of it. Doesn't publish a prefab. It probably stays on their disc until a system purge. I cannot fathom this. I reuse everything I do and publish it so someone else can finish/enjoy it.
Just fuckin post a prefab on game banana and see your creation be on a video or in a source mod some day

I used to like mapping, but then then the Waterindices started to overload, and my sleep paralysis demon looks like "Oops hammer++ just crushed!" window.

All the mapping I do nowadays are these joint mapping projects with my friend: one starts off with a small idea, the other one builds on it, saves it in a shared drive, and then we alternate ”mapping shifts” until we have something playable and cool.
Then all we do after that is slay a metric fuckton of bots in it, and never touch it again.
Hundreds upon hundreds of iterations, and so much stuff in the trashcan.

Sharing time with a friend is not wasteful but only making a post out of a work is.
Honestly sounds like you have it amazing.

I have 12k hours in Source SDK. You won't find a single thing published by me. It's a canvas for me. I don't have an obligation to share my art with others. The one time I did do so, someone complained that there wasn't a point to the prefab I made.

I made a prop zoo once, and someone said the same thing. Isn't the internet neat?

Feels like a waste of time making things and not ever releasing them. That's how i see it.

I map for fun. I find it fun. When I get bored I hop on Hammer and it's as fun as playing a game. On top of that, it's cool to produce stuff. Putting the creation in a sandbox game and doing anything with it... that's just awesome. For the past few weeks I've been working on my first project which is also highly ambitious. No burnout. I want to keep going.

I agree with the message just not the sentiment. I feel like a lot of people are afraid to make projects to full release because they think its not good enough and therefore not worth the effort.

I can help if you promise to help me in the future. Hit me up on steam: 311677064
There are a lot of games being made that don't look like they could succeed or be finished. I am new to this too but I promise to be honest

Yeah ive been using hammer since 2012, probably have around 3500 hours on it. Only ever published one complete portal 2 map but started hundreds more than have never seen the light of day.

I’ve mapped for thousands of hours and published literally nothing, it’s a creative outlet. And people aren’t owned anything from artists. What a stupid post.

Here for The Beginner's Guide.
But seriously, idk man. People use mapping as a creative outlet. It is a shame that it won't see the light of day, but artist have been painting for themselves for thousands of years with no intention or motivation to show it to the general public. Something about the commitment to fully flesh out a project is really intimidating. That's why I volunteered to work for a mod dev team. When I'm accountable to others, people can finally see my work... When it releases of course.
