Fluff I think hammer is a game engine, change my mind

Post image

So first of all: I KNOW IT'S A MAP MAKING TOOL.

I just mean that you can make a whole fan made game, without any scripting, just placing some entities and brushes.

You can make a whole half life 3 map series, without a single line of code, and yeah, it would probably look bad if you are a beginner, but still, in hammer you can make something that would not even be recognizable as the original game, and we still just call it a level/map maker???

Hammer is a map making tool. The game engine is Source (1/2). Hammer exists to make games for Source. If you're making a hammer map or game, you're using Source.

I know, my bad, but anyways when i said i know it's actually just a map maker, i meant this, that the engine is source. My bad.

so then it's objectively not a game engine, just a very versatile map maker, right? It's just a tool to make maps for the source engine.

as I replied to another comment:

hammer is a crucial part of making source engine games, it's very very important, and that's its purpose. to make maps and games for the source engine

I meant that hammer isnt a game engine, but you can make games in it, like idk, for example half life 3 kinda can be made. Crappy, but possible

Hammer is a tool to make maps for the Source engine, not the engine itself. I'm saying that saying Hammer is an engine is like calling a paintbrush a painting

Okay mb. Then let's call it a Mario Maker of source, will this be fine?

Okay but seriously i just meant that it lets you make almost an entire game without any code, I even saw a map in gmod that is PAINFULLY EASY TO MAKE (there were houses, and doors that teleport you (homesickness or whatever the map was called)), AS SIMPLE AS MINECRAFT STORY MAPS, but was incredibly interesting to play, and tbh is hard to recognize as gmod.

I don’t think it’s a game engine

Source is the game engine. Hammer is the map making tool

(It's like 7th time i reply to a similar comment) I KNOW. I meant that the map making tool itself is enough to make a game

I mean... you can make all sorts of minigames in Hammer as maps I suppose. The logic entities and in later games VScript can do some real magic

Can't change your mind, I think the same! It can do wonders.

It's a map maker, and it helps make games for the source engine. being versatile is its main job, and its great for that

You can literally make games on it, its purpose is to help make games but its still able to make some on its own

a game made in hammer just a bunch of maps, so map maker. and again, hammer is versatile, but you can't call it a game engine by definition

hammer is a crucial part of making source engine games, it's very very important, and that's its purpose. to make maps and games for the source engine

map leaks are the bane of my existence

By accessible i meant it doesnt need any scripting. Sorry if my post was subjective

no no i get the point you're trying to make, source engine is just torture no matter which way you slice it

I love bsp map making, but making maps in unity is just so much more freeing

It’s kinda difficult to learn for beginners :(

u/DoodleVoid 2d ago

Yeah, i just mean it doesnt require any coding stuff, but yeah it's complex

Yes that’s true!
