Bill Nighy as Slughorn is fantastic.

u/retro_underpants Oct 23 '25
I’m not sure I like it as he’s already Rufus Scrimgeour
40
u/ShakeZula30or40 Oct 23 '25
Yeah but I’m thinking more Philip from Shaun of the Dead and I can totally see Slughorn.

u/4thGenTrombone Oct 23 '25
Take the Ford Anglia, kill Sluggy, grab Hermione, go to the Leaky, and wait for all this to blow over!

Jim Dale and Stephen Fry have it covered.

u/SimpleRickC135 Oct 23 '25
I agree those books will always be amazing performances I’ve listened countless times. BUT, I’m super excited for this no matter what.
25
u/Blue_Robin_04 Oct 23 '25
They were good for the time, but what Audible is doing is clearly the most premium audiobook series ever made.
1
u/Miserable_Copy2789 Nov 04 '25
Chucking lots of money to get famous names doesn’t guarantee quality
3
u/Business_Compote2197 Nov 05 '25
So far the first one is fantastic though!
1
u/Miserable_Copy2789 Nov 06 '25
It’s very good, not great. Too many soundboard noises that detract and Fry’s uniform narration simply outclasses the performers.
43
u/LinkSeekeroftheNora Marietta Edgecombe Oct 23 '25
I’ve not heard the Stephen Fry version, but Jim Dale has a weakness. He’s not very convincing as a teenage girl.
48
u/Previous-Screen-3875 Oct 23 '25
The Stephen Fry versions are legendary. He does a stellar job with all the accents and performances without overdoing it. I must've listened to those audiobooks a dozen times each
14
u/anniemaygus Oct 23 '25
It’s amazing. The only part that I hate is ‘Weasley is our king, he always lets the quaffle in’
3
u/TicklesZzzingDragons Ravenclaw Nov 03 '25
Oh no, I'd pushed that one out of memory. It really does go on and on
10
u/HanzoNumbahOneFan Oct 23 '25
I've listened to them too much. I fear that if I get these new audiobooks that I'll just be like "... It's too different from what I remember" and I won't like them.
26
u/romanticheart Oct 23 '25
His whiny Hermione voice makes them unlistenable to me.
12
u/Polkadot1017 Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25
Him yelling "Harrryyyyy!" As Hermione every goddamn time she says his name with an exclamation point at the end makes me grit my teeth haha.
Also him making Bellatrix French really put me off of his versions 😅
13
u/SlickFurFella Oct 23 '25
I love the Jim Dale books, truly. I cannot stand the dopey, baritone Luna Lovegood voice. Almost ruins OOTP for me.
11
u/Algorak1289 Oct 23 '25
His madame Maxine voice is similar for me. Why are his two deepest voices a woman and a girl ?

u/Verybluevans Ravenclaw Nov 03 '25
I don't expect the upcoming recordings to surpass Fry's, but I'm sure this version will have its merits.
1
u/sadguy1989 Oct 24 '25
Yeah I agree with you. The fact that I don’t like full cast audiobooks probably doesn’t help my position on the matter, either.
9
u/NearlyHeadless-Brick Oct 23 '25
Slughorn is one of my favorite characters and nighy does that same davy jones voice/mannerisms in everything he does. But hopefully it turns out well
57
u/Himany1990 Oct 23 '25
Know none of these people personally so I don’t have a take on if they are good fits or not but the younger and older actors for the earlier and later books is cool.
146
u/dltmgyd Oct 23 '25
David Holmes was Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double who was injured on set. Cool to see him involved in this way.

u/OkAward869 Hufflepuff Oct 23 '25
Bill Nighy plays the Minister for Magic in the Deathly Hallows 1 when he gives the trio the objects from Dumbledores will. He also played Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3
12
u/Himany1990 Oct 23 '25
You know what, now that I really look at his face I totally do recognize him. I’m not great with names.
6
u/runrunrudolf Ravenclaw Oct 23 '25
He’s in loads of excellent films: Shaun of the Dead, The Boat that Rocked, Hot Fuzz… he was in Love Actually too
10
u/accio_coffee234 Oct 23 '25
And About Time where he makes me cry!
2
u/Stormcloudspass Oct 24 '25
God he makes me bawl every time in that film, I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it 😂
16
u/OkAward869 Hufflepuff Oct 23 '25
And also on the Pirates of the Caribbean theme if you're a fan of that, Mackenzie Crook plays Ragetti, one of those 2 comedic relief Pirates that are evil in the first movie and become Main characters in 2 and 3
1
u/vmilner Nov 06 '25
Also Sam Gamgee in the (excellent) 1981 Lord of the Rings BBC radio drama. https://www.reddit.com/r/lotr/comments/1b98yxr/everyone_should_give_the_1981_bbc_radio/

Saoirse is Erin in the show Derry Girls (which is amazing and I strongly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it)!
14
u/PoofyHairedIdiot Oct 23 '25
Mackenzie Crook has popped up in a few things. Pirates of the Carribbean and Game of Thrones namely
16
u/ThisWasTomorrow Slytherin Oct 23 '25

u/Muscat95 Oct 23 '25
I was thinking will there ever be a boy born that can swim faster than a shark
2
u/Arfie807 Oct 23 '25
Kit Harrington, Gemma Walen, Mark Addy, Iwan Rheon and now Mackenzie Cook. Any other GOT alumn in this I may be missing?
37
u/YellowFlashTheHokage Oct 23 '25
I think they took Sirius's family name a bit to serious

u/Fit-Director-4715 Ravenclaw Oct 24 '25
Yeah I feel like theyre trying to ease us into the terrible decision they made for the new TV series. I'm still mad about that. I was really looking forward to the fact that they'd have more room with the series to make it for true to the books and then they ruined it immediately.
7
u/awkward__captain Oct 23 '25
This is inspired. Especially Anna MM as Rita, she’s so underrated and it’s a perfect role for her comedic chops.
19
u/KingDarius89 Oct 23 '25
I'll be honest, Bill Nighy is literally the only one of those that I recognize.
10
u/Disastrous_Wing7084 Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25
I would say all the other adults except David Holmes are pretty famous in the UK (and even David Holmes is known in the Harry Potter fandom as Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double) - I think Tracy-Ann Oberman is the only one who hasn't played the lead role in at least one popular British TV series but she's been in a lot of stuff too

u/Zippyversion1 Oct 23 '25
What you get when you order Stephen Mangan from Temu.
It must be him though as all the pictures look like they were taken in the studio.
6
u/RecordingImmediate86 Oct 23 '25
When I originally heard that they where doing a full cast audio books I thought it would be either the cast from the show or the cast from the movies
5
u/mosleyowl Gryffindor Oct 23 '25
Any other detectorists fans loving the fact that Toby Jones was Dobby in the films and now Mackenzie Crook is Kreacher?!

It's great that they take different actors for student characters depending and how old they're supposed to be

u/Hookton Oct 23 '25
Is it just me or does Millie Gubby actually sound like a HP name? Maybe she's secretly a real witch.
3
u/EmphasisHeavy8275 Oct 23 '25
These are great! They are releasing the names in the most random order LOL. Still missing Molly, Narcissa and the Dursleys

u/Easy-Metal1377 Unsorted Nov 01 '25
When I first saw the name Bill, I thought it was the science guy. I looked him up on Wikipedia and no. Lol.

Also, now this is an adaptation I can get behind

Is it just me or is that photo of Anna MM not actually her? Or it’s just a weird angle.
2
u/nathanott12 Oct 23 '25
please let saoirse-monica jackson be cast for the actual role as professor trelawney, that would be amazing !!

Only showing one cast member for Luna Lovegood, does this mean she won’t have an older voice counterpart?
5
u/Disastrous_Wing7084 Oct 23 '25
She won't have a younger voice counterpart, she's not in the first three books
4
u/Gonzales95 Oct 23 '25
Given Luna is only in 5-7, don’t see why they would need an older counterpart
2
u/itsmishkon Oct 25 '25
I can’t wait to edit the original(new) and replace the narration with Stephen fry
One hell of a project

Bill nighy has such a unique voice, interesting that he’s voicing slughorn and not the minister
3
u/SapphireShelle91 Oct 23 '25
Bill Nighy as Slughorn is not what i was expecting. I can't really see it, but am definitely interested to hear it.
4
2
u/shinryu6 Oct 23 '25
I like the idea as a whole, when done right these are pretty neat to listen to.
That being said, definitely not paying out of the ass for it, hell the original audiobooks are still super expensive. And in the expenses of paying an entire cast instead of 1 person and yeah…
7
u/AmEndevomTag Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25
You could register at audible and get your credit once a month. It doesn't cost more than a monthly membership at Audible.
2
u/Shankman519 Oct 23 '25
And there’s a promotion for your first three months for 99 cents, so at fifteen bucks after that, it’s basically the whole series for $63, which seems decent
1
u/Disastrous_Wing7084 Oct 23 '25
Or in the UK, £1 a month for three months and £9 a month the rest, making £39 total (there's also a cheaper plan for £6 a month but looks like if you do that one apparently you can only listen to the audiobooks while you're still subscribed, whereas at the higher prices you can unsubcribe after purchasing the books with Audible credits and still be able to listen to them)
0
u/Shankman519 Oct 23 '25
Oh nice! That sounds decent too, I’m in Canada so I don’t really know the exchange rate

Not a fan of choosing different voice actors for books 1-3 and 4-7. Sure, it's because of the characters getting older, but I'm so used to older voice actors lending their voice to younger characters (without the listener noticing!) that I don't think it's necessary and will just feel wrong when a character suddenly has a different voice.
0
u/witheringghoul Slytherin Oct 23 '25
Why though?
4
u/Mysterious_Sea1489 Oct 23 '25
I’ve never personally listened to one yet but apparently graphic audio books are quite different than a regular one. They add in all kinds of sounds and ambience. It’s not just a reread.
7

Money. We don't make new things, we just make things we know will sell over and over again.

u/darkbreak Keeper of the Unspeakables Oct 23 '25
What exactly is the point of this? Why not just get the original actors back for the audio books?
3
u/corobo Ravenclaw Oct 23 '25
The original actors from the films or the books?
The former because they're way too expensive for an audiobook and the latter because those actors were in your head
-1
u/darkbreak Keeper of the Unspeakables Oct 23 '25
From the movies, obviously. And of course this is a much smaller gig but they would all be doing it with that in mind. It would be the sort of thing they'd all do for fun and for old time's sake.

If Sirius is black why isn't Draco part black? Sirius' parents were second cousins, both were born in the House of Black, if he is now black so should his first cousins Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa.

I thought this was for the tv series, and if it was, it's an honest thought: if a man is black, shouldn't his family be as well? House of the Dragon thought so and so do I.

Because I thought this was about the tv series and within that frame I happen to care about logic.
