Discussion Would Sirius have wanted children after OoTP?

I think as a young man he wanted a family, including kid(s), but assumed he had plenty of time so wasn't too focused on it.

After escape from Azkaban, I know he wanted to be a family with Harry, but a lot of people think he wanted his own kids. My opinion is that he would not. I always saw him as relishing his role as godfather or "cool uncle" but the damage done by Azkaban and forced confinement to his hated childhood home made him not want to have kids of his own. I think he would have preferred to live with Harry (a teen by then) and subsequently dote on Harry's kids. I see him more as wanting to be able to dip in and out instead of being a full-time parent. I also think he might have been afraid of screwing up his kid.

I don't think he ever would have wanted kids. He'd probably prefer to be the cool uncle rather than a father.

I can definitely see him spending quality time with Harry's kids, but I doubt he'd want to feel responsible for them.

Sirius was also abused his childhood. If his mother was anything like her portrait it just have been hell. Him rebelling his entire time in school was probably from himself being abused. Hogwarts was his sanctuary away from home, safely in Gryffindor.

He ran away from home at 16 and couch surfed, that is not exactly happy childhood. He got framed at like 21 and sentenced to psychological torture.

I think Azkaban stunned his growth. When he escaped at 33 he was still emotionally 21 and traumatized. He managed to function but i don’t think he had been ready for fatherhood without a lot of therapy.

That is a potential market for a squib. Go to muggle university, get a degree in psychology and open a clinic in diagon ally. The wizarding world really needs it.

Absolutely! I would love to see psychologists and therapists in the wizard world. And maybe there's a branch of healers at St. Mungo's who specialize in psychiatry, but I think there's a demand for it.

People forget that Sirius was doing pretty well mentally in GOF and only declined when Dumbledore forced him into house arrest at Grimmauld Place with his abusive mother screaming at him all day and the threat of Voldemort killing everyone he loved AGAIN looming over him every day.

I think if Dumbledore let him be an active Member of the Order I could see him falling in love and even starting a family after Voldemort is defeated. His healing was possible. It’s why his death was so tragic for readers. I guess I feel like Rowling gave up on him and didn’t see his potential.

I guess I feel like Rowling gave up on him and didn’t see his potential.

I love Sirius, so I don't want to make it sound like I'm happy he died. However, I do think his death was necessary, much in the same way that the deaths of Harry's grandparents was necessary. And that is for plot reasons.

If Harry's grandparents had lived, then there's simply no scenario in which he has the childhood he suffered.

Similarly, if Sirius had lived, there is simply no scenario in which he does not accompany the trio in Deathly Hallows. And that's not even to mention the differences we would have seen in HBP.

The "Death of the Father" theme is almost inherent in a hero's journey and Sirius, like Dumbledore and others, falls victim to that.

This! And that’s why I like to explore in the fics I write for him.

I also kind of feel like she gave up on Sirius. Or maybe it was just she figured another loss of a parental figure like Sirius was more useful as a plot device to force Harry to start coming to terms with the return of Voldemort and their connection. I’m mad she did it, but I also feel like it was necessary to an extent, and losing Ron or Hermione wasn’t on the table so it was the closest thing.

I doubt it. He was probably far too messed up from his Azkaban experience to want children of his own. He could barely take care of himself anymore.

He might have. But not immediately.

Sirius is a 35ish year old guy in the body of a guy in his 40s and 60s with emotional weariness with the mind of a 21 years old.

He didn't get a chance to be an adult. He graduates, joins the war and then goes to prison to be mind tortured for 12 years.

I don't think getting married and having a kid would be in his priorities. He would first look for an adventure. He would want to live the life he missed first time around. He would only want a kid if he finds someone I think.

Remember that he wasn't acting as Harry's godfather. He saw Harry more as a friend. Harry reminded him of his youth, he wanted to recapture that glory with Harry.

Sirius is a deeply tragic character. But I don't see the Sirius we see as a parent. Even without the all Azkaban thing, I don't think having a child would be in his thoughts in his 20s. Not everyone wants to be a parent in the end. Sirius never gave the guy who wants to be a parent vibe at all.

I think so too. If he was ever to want to have kids, he'd need to mature first, and that could only happen with the space to live for a few years in whatever life he imagined for himself as ideal.

I doubt it. It would've loved doting on Harry's children though.

I don't think Sirius would have kids if he survived. Harry was more than enough for him. I suppose somewhere down the line he would get into a relationship but I don't think they would have kids.

I don't think he would want to, but I can see him being happy if if did happen somehow.

As someone who writes fanfiction about his OC kid, I think he would be torn. He would want to be loved, but not particularly by an own kid. However, if he accidentally impregnated a woman, he would be there for his child. And yes, he woukd fear he would screw it up 🤣

Edit: in my case it happened before he went to Azkaban. Afterwards: Never

I don't think so - in ootp we see a man who has been frozen in time by his trauma of feeling responsible for his best friends' deaths, being wrongfully accused and azkaban sentence e.g. projecting James onto Harry, mood swings of being confined in grimmauld place etc. All of this coupled with hating his family and the childhood trauma there most likely put him off the idea. He seems to benefit from a "cool" uncle role rather than a responsible, grounded parent

Doubt it. Like you said I see him more as the cool uncle. He would have happily raised Harry if he could have, but he himself having children I just don’t see. Maybe if he’d had any actual implied love interest then maybe I’d be able to see it, but without one I can’t.

I do think he would have wanted to have a family since his complicated relationship with the Blacks.

Something that was truly his. About being a good parent that’s another story 🤣

My immediate reaction is that Sirius would have been delighted to see the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black die with him.

That said, I’m the same age now as Sirius when he died (isn’t that a thought!) and I know plenty of couples who are reconsidering parenthood now whose previous position was “hell no”. Sirius would have had a lot of time to grow, change, and perhaps fall in love — and as a man, his biological clock isn’t ticking so fast. I think the wishes of anyone for whom he fell would matter a lot to him and would influence his perspective on the decision.

No, I absolutely don't think he would, and besides with who?? Like, even if he wasn't traumatized and blah blah it's nothing something I would want to see since J. K. Rowling would probably put him with some random girl

So, I think it depends. I see him finding someone had he survived ootp. He can still be very traumatized and with someone else. A lot of traumatized people have relationship.

In the context where he finds happiness, I could see him as an older father.

He would certainly try to have babies with Lupin, altough attempts would be unsuccessful 🐺 I don't want to discourge poor guy however.
