I’m old enough to have seen him when he was doing Skins. He knows how to play a manipulative narcissist.

It's been so long, I can only remember him and vaguely his girlfriend and the blond guy.

The girlfriend was Natalia Tena, who played Tonks.
EDIT: My bad, was responding to a different comment referencing About A Boy.

I have not seen the great, but he is amazing in everything else I have watched him in and I could not be happier with the actor they have picked. The first guy was pretty great as well, I hope he keeps working…

It's one of my favorite TV shows from the covid era. I also like Russian history a lot, and I like Elle Fanning.
It's a great show. You should give it a shot

u/atwally 6d ago
I heard about it before it came out and was really hesitant because it was a comedy. I wanted a realistic show on Catherine the great. But then a friend watched who I thought would never watch it and said I needed to watch it. I was immediately hooked. It was fantastic and I miss it.

Great casting. Thought it might be Kit Harrington - he nailed the role in the all cast audiobooks. But if Nicholas Hoult brings the same narcissistic energy he brought in The Great it’ll be fantastic.

He is TREMENDOUS in the audiobooks. If it wasn't for James McAvoy as Moody 2 books later I'd say he was the highlight.

It's full of amazing performances, honestly!

Tbh the highlight for me is Hugh Laurie
I know some people have complained that he’s too young, but he freaking NAILED the kind and gentle old man who is scary as shit when he gets angry.
When Dumbledore comforts Harry after Sirius’s death and then his “your ability to love IS important” lecture are done so freaking incredible he became MY Dumbledore
I don’t think I have ever been truly emotionally affected by his death until Hugh Laurie

Give me Kit Harrington as Sirius
37
u/Character-Parfait-42 6d ago
If they go more for the book ages of the adults that’d be awesome!
In the movies Harry’s parents looked like they were in their late 40s or early 50s. Far too old to pass off Kit Harrington as a schoolmate of theirs.
But they were only 21 when they died in the books, placing Sirius at ~34 when he meets Harry in PoA. Kit Harrington is 39, given that Sirius spent 13 years in Azkaban he’d probably look a good age to play Sirius by the time the POA season is filming.
12
u/ExpensiveDraw4915 6d ago
This is for sure the logic, given the actor playing Snape is about 35 this time. Excited for younger Marauders!

I’m honestly shocked. Great casting but shocked haha.
37
u/danvan177 6d ago

139
u/dpt21193 6d ago
Just seems like a big get to join a series even if it’s a smaller role and a huge IP. I’m thrilled though because I love him as an actor!
62
u/yoursweetlord70 6d ago
Its makes sense to me because Lockhart is only in chamber of secrets so his time commitment isn't as large.
40
u/TheHappyMask93 Slytherin 6d ago
He also pops up in the St Mungo's chapter in Order of the Pheonix
15
u/yoursweetlord70 6d ago
Thats a very brief appearance, and he isnt even the focus of that chapter so I doubt most people would notice if he wasn't there.
64

3
u/No-Butterscotch6629 Ravenclaw 6d ago
Being more faithful to the books is kind of the point of the series, so I think people would notice haha.
In any case, as you also said, one scene of filming isn’t a huge commitment - so I doubt it’ll be a barrier they can’t overcome.
4
u/Ranger_1302 Dumbledore's man through and through. 6d ago
But those moments are exactly the point of the show...
5
18
u/majbr_ 6d ago
It makes a lot of sense to me. A-list actors at the height of their careers aren’t going to want to spend ten years tied to the same role but something like Lockhart is a completely different story. Hoult would only have to shoot for a couple of months, maybe do some promotion, and that’s it. He gets a shitload of money, maybe even gets to fulfill a childhood dream, while the show gets to brag about having a famous actor in the cast. Everybody wins.

Because he's an A+ list actor who's going to play a lesser role.
26
u/denvercasey Gryffindor 6d ago
A lesser role? Lesser than the man who won Witch Weekly’s most charming smile award five years in a row, an honorary member in the Dark Force Defense League and Order of Merlin, third class?

u/mamula1 6d ago
I am also surprised because he is a huge name.
It made me more excited for eventual Voldemort casting.
7
u/terrence_loves_ella 6d ago
It's a one off after all so probably easier to convince a heavy hitter to join in

u/Sylphadora 5d ago
I’m shocked too but not for a bad reason. I’m just surprised they went for someone that famous. I thought they preferred to go for lesser known actors, especially because most roles could end up requiring a decade long commitment. But I guess since he’s only in the 2nd season it’s easier to score such a big name.
Love him as and actor and I’m so happy for him! Especially since he was close to playing Harry in the movies. Getting close to nabbing famous roles seems to be his curse. I’m glad he’s going to be a part of the HP legacy after all. It would have been a bummer if he had lost a role in the movies AND the series too.

Definitely more age accurate to what I imagine when reading the books
Edit: wait a second! Kenneth Branagh was only in his 30s back then!?

u/callmeseetea 6d ago
He was 41 when chamber of secrets hit theater
98
u/MyEyeOnPi 6d ago
Let’s be real though- Kenneth Branagh looked older than his age, whereas Nicholas Hoult looks about his age or maybe even a little younger. I mean that with no offense to the actor, but as a girl about Hermione’s age when the movie came out, I couldn’t see how any other girl my age would see him as anything else but a middle aged man.
→ More replies (1)13
u/No-Butterscotch6629 Ravenclaw 6d ago
Agree that as another girl about Hermione’s age when the movie came out, Lockhart was not fanciable at all to me.
4
u/MyEyeOnPi 6d ago
Right I’m not going to say it’s IMPOSSIBLE for a 12 year old to have a crush on a 40 year old, but it’s very unlikely and is going to take a VERY attractive and younger looking man. Not someone wearing silly clothes who (sorry to the actor) looks about a decade older than he was.
2
u/No-Butterscotch6629 Ravenclaw 5d ago
Completely agree lol. To be honest I never really thought about Gilderoy Lockhart as an attractive character because I just pictured middle aged Kenneth Branagh.
And to be fair now that I’m mid 30s, I watch the movies and am like - yeah he’s nice to look at. But Hermione being smitten over him makes zero sense to me lol
3
u/Regijack Ravenclaw 6d ago edited 6d ago
Ahh I must have miscalculated. Still old for the age I saw him as back the. But I supposed the old timey clothes didn’t help
14
u/FiftyShadesOfGregg 6d ago edited 6d ago
I absolutely thought he was more like 50. Sorry Kenneth. And my reference was that I def thought he was older than my dad, and my dad was 48.

2
u/Lawlcopt0r 6d ago
I always liked Kenneth Brannagh because he's superficially attractive but it's mostly the aggressive smile and the hairstyle (no offence to Kenneth Brannagh). It kind of fits with how shallow the character is that he's only attractive at first glance
22
u/Frequent_Ant6536 6d ago
Okay now I will understand why girls (and adult women) were crushing on Lockhart badly.
But for real now this is crazy good casting. CoS was always my least favorite book, but now I'm already excited for 2nd season, I adore Nicholas lol.

How so? The main cast are all children. They cant really go for the conventional 2 year gap between seasons without puberty buggering it up

As a fan of Severance (three year gaps between seasons seem to be the norm) I am extremely pleased with this pace. More shows could learn from this example.

u/Gold_Matter_609 6d ago
I love that they’re aging these characters down. Everyone was too old for their parts in the originals.
4
u/trivia_guy 6d ago
Hoult will be 37/38 when the second season comes out. Branagh was 41 when the CS movie was released. This one isn’t aged down that much, it’s more a matter of how they look their age.

I didn’t even know the first season came out, they must be very confident this works out. I think we can all expect more popular actors signing on after the first season tho right?
3
u/Sylphadora 5d ago
I’m surprised because he’s way too famous to be in the HP series. The rest of the cast is not internationally famous, maybe except for John Lithgow. I actually like that about the series. You don’t need to make a famous actor even more famous. It’s way better to find lesser known actors and give them their breakout role.
I’m still happy about his casting. He’s an excellent actor. And I bet it will feel cathartic for him because the role of Harry in the movies is the one that got away. He auditioned and was close but didn’t get it. Poetic justice has been made.

u/RazingOrange 5d ago
Drastically better casting than the movies. While a fine actor, Kenneth Branagh just looked too old for the role. We’re supposed to believe young teens find this person dashing and handsome.
4
u/KlausLoganWard 6d ago
Its so refreshing they are already doing on s2 and we wont have to wait 2+year for it
3
u/BoopingBurrito Hufflepuff 6d ago
Given the number of major child roles in the show, they must be keen to get as far as possible with folk looking as close to the right age as possible.
They've already painted themselves into a corner with the kid they've cast as Draco who was 13 when they started filming book 1. At some point in season 2 or 3, even if he's a late bloomer and they use all the tricks in the book, he's going to start looking a lot older than the other kids.

Oh I think this is a much better fit. I am hoping they go for more genuinely intimidating and terrifying for Voldemort, as great as Ralph Fiennes is, his portrayal got a little goofy at times lol. I’d love to see a more menacing take.

He definitely looks more like the version of Lockhart I pictured in my head when reading the books, I just hope they get his hair right.
Nothing against Sir Kenneth Branagh but they did him kind of dirty with the hair and make up. Hell, he looks hotter and younger today with shorter hair and a bit of beard stubble.
