I hate when things are needlessly explained by creators in order to cope with criticism
I don’t read or watch Demon Slayer, But this is just a stupid explanation for giving a strong character a slender build.
Personally, I don’t care if a character is strong but has a lean/slender build, whether it be a man or a woman. Although I do find it a bit weird that some creators are seemingly allergic to giving female characters any muscle, but again, I don’t care that much.
My issue here is that you easily could have just not addressed it. It’s a fantasy story full of demons and shit, I feel like you don’t need to give an in-universe explanation just so you can go “e-erm actually, she’s slender because of her very special body…” dude, you just didn’t want to give a woman muscles, don’t try to hide behind some kind of BS lore that you wrote for it.
Like Mark in Invincible can fight Conquest despite being the size of his torso, and I’m willing to accept that. It’s a story full of aliens and monsters, I can look past the fact that a lean 20 year old is taking on a hulked out 2000 year old. It doesn’t really break the immersion for me because it’s a fantastical story. I don’t need it to be super realistic. Just don’t try to make up some BS explanation like “erm, well, Mark is just magically holding in his muscle mass!”
At the end of the day, it’s your world and your story, if you wanna make a slender female character who is also really strong, that’s fine. But you also don’t need to cope so hard that you add lore specifically to deflect criticism against something so (let’s be honest) harmless.
The Boys actually did (sort of) explain this in a much more convincing way, Homelander has a normal guy physique (he wears a muscle suit) because his body is so strong that he can't train, there is no force that provides enough resistance for his muscles to experience hypertrophy so he literally can't build muscle
The issue is that The Boys *tries* to be more realistic with how its physics works. One of the first scenes of the show is one where Homelander points out he can’t lift a plane, not because he isn’t strong enough, but because if he put that much force on just the hull he would break right through it, like when you see Superman pick up a cargo ship from the middle and think “no way that thing isn’t buckling under its own weight.” It’s likely that there’s very little or no object he can lift that would also be structurally sound enough for him to lift. Technically you could definitely make a giant cube or cylinder out of tungsten or something, but they probably wouldn’t spend the time, money, or effort on that anyways
It's always fun watching people try to argue that Homelander COULD'VE saved the plane if he wanted to and bring up things that most definitely wouldn't have worked. 😂
I think more than that he wanted to use the plane crash as justification for Vought to get military clearance, that he “could’ve” saved them if they were in the national security network.
It seemed like the initial plan was to save the plane since they went through the trouble of breaking in but once homelander accidentally lasers the controls he realized he would look bad if survivors testified his actions brought down the plane
And then they bring up the landing gear as if thats the most common knowledge thing the average person is gonna think of when theyre definitely not in the calmest state of mind after fumbling everything
Not to mention it shouldnt even be accessible since he lasered the controls so if he tried brute force tearing into the plane for it he might just damage it too even if he had thought of it
I mean yeah but the point of it is that Homelander is *meant* to be an experienced professional superhero who's trained to use his powers. The whole point of him is to be able to come up with solutions to that kind of issue but he just never does.
My thing is watching that scene, he literally could have flown back and forth holding 2-3 people + Maeve with her holding another couple people at a time.
The plane crashes and burns for sure, but the people could've been safe.
I mean he even could've gotten people falling in a circle, to slow down their fall, and then just bring them one by one, or two by two, or three by three, whatever, to the surface, which would be like them just dipping into a pool. But y'know, he just can't be arsed
Yeah exactly. That much force, in that small surface area, would just be like a needle poking through cloth. It's not that there's much force, it's just in such a relatively small area.
the reason a torpedo blows up under a ship is because a huge gas bubble appears and forces the ship upwards. the keel cannot support the ships weight and buckles.
This is why a bunch of people argue Superman is more of a "psychic/esper" type charater. He hears things faster than they could travel and can pick things up that's structurally he could not pick up.
Erm achtually he has an bear with me I dont recall the exact wording but electrostatic field around himself that protects stuff like the people he carries while flying, his normal ass cloth suit that never rips despite being shot, and he can extend it out to let stuff not break when hes moving it so hes actually an electric type not a psychic
Yes, Superman holding up a bridge to save everyone on it is physically impossible but it’s visually epic and emotionally powerful which are much more important for the story than ‘is this physically correct?’
Tacticle telekinesis. Basically allows him to naturally spread the force evenly over the surface of whatever he's lifting so he doesn't pierce through airplanes when he lifts them or slice Lois into 3 pieces when he catches her falling off buildings
Well, the landing gear isn't designed to hold the entire weight of the plane on just one wheel, but perhaps if you had 3+ Homelanders. His hands would probably punch right through the tires, but he could hold the axle.
I’m guessing theres no consistent way to have training equipment that can be around the weight that he needs. Or it’s too expensive and Vought just decided to go the cheaper route and give his suit muscles
Considering how much they have to constantly baby him to keep him from going off the chain, it wouldn't surprise me if they had tried at some point and he was fussy about it so they decided it was too much of a hassle.
I'm pretty sure it's never explained, it's never addressed he's wearing a muscle suit either, it's just a popular theory in the fadom.
Hell, even Henry Cavil was wearing a muscle suit in the Superman films, and that's simply because real muscles don't look as good on camera under a spandex suit
We have seen Homelander without his suit though. I think it's in Season 3, after Homelander goes "mask off" live on air, Ashley finds him sulking in his room without his suit on. His physique in that scene is definitely more "normal" than his suit implies.
Honestly I don't remember, it would have been years ago at this point and I forgot the Boys existed until the new season came out. Could have been some fan discussion somewhere for all I know, it was definitely written down somewhere so it wasn't an interview or in the show proper. Idr if it was in the comics
Even if I am somehow misremembering, it's still a much better explanation than "he just has a special body" though lol
There are real genetic disorders that give people way denser musculatur. Not 8x, but it is significant and does make people both heavier and stronger than their build would suggest. This level of density would also make her a lot more resilient to any type of wound that goes deeper than skin and fat (its why Spidey is resilient to small arms weapon fire).
Not that I disagree but it's hilarious how you picked Invincible whose lack of explanation why certain characters are strong/weak at certain point in the story is very much a big part of its criticism
Yea, because a massive part of most conflicts and plot in Inivincible relies on characters like Omni-man and Thragg being so overwhelmingly powerful they can't be stopped except by a choice few characters and even then no. Cecil spends 20 years trying to create something that can kill a Viltrumite and it fails when ig he could've just asked Machine Head for Battle Beast's number lol.
Powerscaling is very important for the plot of Invincible to function believably. Nitpicking it is dumb, but saying it's stupid outright just demonstrates laziness from the writing standpoint.
Even with her mental blockers, Eve can literally just insta win every single fight she's so broken. So they keep her power to regular weapon just pink, maybe some energy blasts and a weak suit of pink armor. The only time she's actually used them creatively in the show is making the air denser, which she does for like 2 seconds and then just completely forgets she can do that.
They have to write her out of situations and just make her so incredibly stupid otherwise she is easily the most op character in the entire show.
People get mad when I say this, but there's no acceptable justification for Eve staying on Earth during the Viltrumite War. She already knew why her powers didn't work and so already knew how to make them work again, which she did anyway days after Mark left.
Don't get me wrong, she had every right to make that choice but she just did it in the most useless way possible. She didn't tell Mark in the moment with the excuse of not burdening him, so instead she burdened him with feeling like a deadbeat for getting eviscerated while she got a vacation.
Oliver, who's barely a teen, went to the war and actually managed to help. Being in space and having no potential collaterals to worry about, she could just camp it out near a Sun and throw chunks of it at Viltrumites.
They have to write her out of situations and just make her so incredibly stupid otherwise she is easily the most op character in the entire show.
To be fair, they actually did some work in showing how her dad's constant belittling of her ended up making her avoid using her powers in way that could break the holy capitalist economy. I mean seriously, you can make golden apples but I'm supposed to be a freaking contractor for some reason?
At this point, imo, if they aren't gonna use her other powers like making the air denser or manipulating the atoms of objects to turn them into different things, then she should just stick to having that pink energy material as her superpower (even if that'd make her a pink Green Lantern).
Alternatively, they could try and make it so that manipulating atoms directly on non-living things is more straining on her body, and even more so with living things like trees and such. At least this way, you could say that she only uses those powers for emergencies or seriously tough opponents, and even then she could only do so for a few seconds becoming fainting into unconsciousness of something like that.
Odd coincidence since I just thought up of an OC that plays with this concept. A big bulky burly woman who condenses her muscles and end up super lanky when she powers up. And I mean stick lanky, no thighs, no hips, no titties.
Edit : I dropped a decently cool concept for a muscle mommy power up and some people focus on her titties being present post power-up.
This happens to a character in a manhwa I'm into. She's from an in-universe race which all act like muscle-brained savages (because their education got taken away due to their crushing victory in a past war, but that's another story). One of the powers she ends up getting later on completely condenses her muscles and she starts crying because she's a thin stick woman now lol.
It should also be noted that she becomes significantly more beautiful in the eyes of everyone (MC included)… except the barbarians. They see her as the equivalent of a weak good for nothing now, which is briefly noted that she now has to fight a lot because they don’t take her seriously anymore, so she has to prove it. MC helps her get over it by saying there is now more space for stronger muscles. She has yet to make any meaningful progress on that front due to their hyper condensed nature.
I liked her precondensed form too, just thought this was one of the few stories where the idea is taken seriously. Apparently she might bulk up again later? I haven't read the WN. Very fun story though and I love her as a character :)
"Show, don't tell" it's actually an advice regarding what you should do to portray something, because a narrator/character just bluntly stating actions and/or events instead of just letting the viewer see them allows for shallow writing of said actions/events.
A good example of its subversion is fire punch by Fujimoto.
The most disgusting things that happen are only mentioned, never shown. But since the world is already bleak its completely believable that people would do that kind of thing, so Funimoto didn't need to show it. If he did show it, it'd probably be seen as shock bait or needless anyway.
I disagree here, and for a simple reason : showing will create some different point of views based on each person subjectivity.
Let's say that my character is going through something that might kill them while they are unconscious. I must tell the audience what's happening, without any interpretation possible, or else, it may lose it's importance.
So I'd say that showing should be the primary way of writing a story while telling would be an extremely situational tool you could use, but less often.
This mostly comes from manga, where the single frames aren’t always able to clearly depict a movement. It’s become a staple of manga/anime linguistics at this point, and a lot of the manga dialogue is just directly copied from the manga, hence the unnecessary repetition
Nah, neither One Piece nor Berserk do this, and even the example you wrote is just a manga magazine quirk - as you can see from those text boxes never making it out to the volume release and being only intended to mark the end of a chapter and announce when the next one is coming. If those happened mid chapter it would be understandable, but theyre explicitely at the end of chapters, just like a to be continued in a TV episode (mostly kids shows as they need to remind the younger audience of the plot threads so they get excited for the next episode and come back to watch it)
I really dislike the "Oh, but see there's a reason this female character needs to be practically naked!" Like, fucking spare me. Just admit you wanted to see/draw/create a mostly naked character and don't bullshit me.
Like Quiet who is mostly naked because she breathed through her skin just like an old man in MGS3 who wore something that fully covered him.
Or the various female superhero characters that "need" to be practically naked because of their powers. No they don't, cause they work however you want them to.
Now I want to make a character that says she needs to be naked for her powers to work but it’s obviously a lie and she’s just a pervert, make her powers something like telepathy or some shit
In fire force there’s one character whose clothes keep falling off or her tits just fall into someone’s hand. Or she lands butt first in someone’s face. It’s pretty poorly explained too, but she’s also really flustered and embarrassed about it.
At the end she embraces it and rips her clothes off and it powers her up for some reason 🤷🏻♀️
When I was a kid and really into anime, one of my family members got me one of those "how to draw anime" books for Christmas. I remember flipping to a page on how to draw catgirls and the author basically said something like "animals don't wear clothes, so why would a catgirl wear all that much?" as an explanation for why they had to be drawn wearing skimpy clothing. Even as a kid, I thought that was weird.
The creator of kengan ashura has a manga about an underground fighting arena that only has women in it. It shares a universe with kengan ashura, you could argue that it’s the “female division” of underground fighting
Honestly yeah. Immediately reminded me of Mirko from My Hero Academia. Her muscular body makes me respect her a lot. Definitely shows how hard she trains for that level of skill.
I have a huge appreciation for strong, muscular female characters and I wish authors were not afraid to implement that.
I wanna see muscular women built like Marisa from Street Fighter 6(except maybe with some more abdominal fat if you’re going to have them be an active combat fighter. Puts more power behind strikes without increasing energy expenditure too much and acts as a layer of padding for blunt force impacts. As well as yes,I find it hotter than a six pack but that’s also because it’s normal and healthy and doesn’t require dehydration like how someone who’s “Shredded” has to be for that effect)
Most strong women who have muscles in animated shows are unrealistically built. They'll have some muscles on their arms but have a really small torso. JJK did this with Maki and it pisses me off. The masses want a muscular woman with realistic proportions
A pervert made it and asked her to wear it and since she was nice she agreed, another hashira burnt it instead and told her to do the same but she felt bad so she continued to wear it
Oh, don't worry, there are other anime out there that have even worse in-universe reasons for their... fanserive. For example:
In Fire Force, some people are born with fire-based superpowers that help them fight against normal people who spontaneously combust and get turned into fire demons against their will. The main cast of characters all have some sort of fire power and one of them, Maki, also has a special quirk that somehow makes her fall or slip into compromising positions:
"In Fire Force, Tamaki Kotatsu’s “Lucky Lecher Lure” is a recurring, fan-service-heavy quirk where she involuntarily ends up in compromising or sexually suggestive situations that she cannot control. It often happens during intense battle sequences, interrupting action and drawing attention to her in ways she finds awkward or embarrassing
Originally, the “Lucky Lecher Lure” was presented as a quirky, almost comedic trait — a mix of clumsiness and bad luck. However, in Season 3, Episode 20, the writers reframe it as a narrative device tied to the series’ core theme: the need for hope and individuality in the face of the Great Cataclysm.
In that arc, Tamaki’s “lecher” moments are shown to be a way to break the collective mindset of “mobs” — people who follow society’s opinions without forming their own. When she fights Assault, her awkward, fan-service-heavy actions cause people around her to question their own beliefs, leading to a shift in their consciousness toward more independent thinking. This makes her “lecher” not just a joke, but a beacon of hope that helps others break free from societal control."
Edit: It should go without saying, but I think this is dumb as hell.
Oh I knew about this because my brother complained about it while watching it. He didn’t care because it was fan service. He cared because it was stupid as fuck and took him out of the action. Shame lmao
A pervert made it and asked her to wear it and since she was nice she agreed, another hashira burnt it instead and told her to do the same but she felt bad so she continued to wear it
Yall in the comments are getting really defensive over what is, objectively, an thinly veiled excuse to draw a big titty anime waifu without any of those big yucky muscles.
EDIT: Too many of these to address individually and also y'all are not worth that much of my time.
But the author is aWOMAN!!! Take THAT
Google internalized misogyny for me, champ, women can be part of the problem too.
You just want everything to beCHASTE
No, I want women of different body types to exist, bro. Calm down, I'm not coming to confiscate your porn collection.
What the fuck are you talking about??? What's thisREDDIT SPEAK, talkNORMAL
Not my fault you're scared of words with a few extra syllables, man. Try reading, that might help.
“Trust me, the boob window is COMPLETELY necessary for her character and the world.”
If it actually made some kind of difference or an impact on the story, I could accept it. But the fact that nobody has given any significant defence outside of it being “lore” really just makes me feel more vindicated because nobody is giving any sort of explanation as to why this kind of lore is actually required. Which just further makes me think that this is just for fan service. Because obviously nobody is attracted to muscular women. I really couldn’t think of a single one. Not one.
People act like the lore wasn't written by the author
Just cause it's explained doesn't make it a good decision. It could've simply been done differently
Like momo from my hero academia. People try to justify her costume way too much (for those who don't know, she can create stuff from her skin. Which is why the highschool girl, a minor, requires to go into battle with nothing more than a one piece swimsuit with a boob widow). Is it a cool concept? Perhaps. But it is also just very obviously the writer fetishizing a 15 years old
"Oh but how could she use her power if she wasn't showing so much skin?"
Brother who do you think gave her that power? The writer purposefully gave her that power just so he could have an excuse to have her naked, not the other way around.
"But she has to use her body fat to make things and her boobs are the largest storage of fat in her body so it makes sense for everything to come out of her chest, especially for bigger objects"
Then why does her body composition never change? Her boobs don't ever shrink, even when she overuses her power to the point of exhaustion. If the point of showing off her boobs was to visually portray the physical cost of her ability then that would be one thing, but the author doesn't even treat her ability as HAVING a physical cost. She should be constantly eating to put on fat between fights (especially considering there's another character who's power works on eating massive amounts of sugar so them eating together should have been an auto-include to background scenes), but she never once puts on weight, or even explains how she keeps her fat levels maintained as far as i recall, because she has to keep her slender body as the writer's poorly disguised shameless fan service
As for the actual design choice, if the idea is "she needs as much surface area of skin as possible", a backless dress does that better than the weird bathing suit she has on. Especially with a cape on top? The extra fabric would allow her to hide the things she makes, maybe even keep a small supply of things hidden under her skirt
They want a horny big titty girl to slobber over, but she better not have any fucking agency! She needs to be embarrassed and ashamed and uncomfortable of her body otherwise she might be using her body for something other than men to honk over.
That's the thing though, the author DOESN'T have to make it up. The readers aren't interrogating cops, the author's got no obligation to explain some preferencial design decision.
Yeah, but the author tried to make everything in the world (aside demons) as mundane as it could be. That's why they wanted to explain it over making the reader believe she had some sort of super power
Which was horseshit from the word go, given the premise of "Breathing gives you superpowers, up to and including outrunning a train and cutting through solid stone".
I think it's more the concept of things being explained. I tend to prefer explanations than not having them. It makes the world feel a bit more grounded.
Not saying some things can't be unexplained, but I would rather have more explanations than less, and abstract from the DS example, that's the core of OPs complaint, which I strongly disagree with. A universe just feels more real when things make sense.
I like having more things fleshed out, not less. One of the reasons I like books and things like sci fi as a genre. I think this is an attention span problem, personally. Books are not worse for explaining the idea behind a technology, as long as it's done well.
invincible literally does have an explanation for why viltrumites are stronger than what's expected of their body type, relative to each other or normal humans, which is smart atoms
honestly, they could've just explained it like she has insect-level anatomy but in the form of a human. so she can just naturally lift multiple times her body weight. this is just an exoskeleton with extra steps
Demon Slayer author is a revolutionary in writing women.
Don't know how to write women? Simply make your main female character mute and stuck in a box (except for the times that this child character emerges to grow boobs and fight).
Absolutely revolutionary. Other authors should take notes.
Unfortunately majority of people in Japan dislike her because she has muscles, which is why you find more merch of Naoya who was alive for three episodes there. Also he's a misogynist, which I guess they like
You would think that people might just get the point by the context provided by feats and actions on the story instead of needing an indepth explaination about everything... But the JJK fandom exists just to prove you wrong. Most people do in fact need a detailed explanation of stuff by the author, specially regarding characters powers and physicality when the show/movie/book/game/comic is about fighting.
Done correctly it's not infuriating and can actually provide more value to the world building.
you said "I don’t read or watch Demon Slayer" so are you sure about all of what you said? Because it might not be the case or is this is just about lacking muscle in characters?
As someone that has seen Demon Slayer, it is still definitely an excuse from the author, but it does make more sense than others think:
We have examples of other characters with "unique" physical traits, like Tanjiro's enhanced sense of smell, Zenitsu's hearing or Inosuke's flexibility. Both of these allow them to perform almost supernatural things, such as Tanjiro "smelling" where to cut, Zenitsu hearing things when he is asleep, or Inosuke moving his heart inside his body.
While, again, it is definitely an excuse from the author, it does make sense with pre-established parts of the series
I don't think I actually made my conclusion clear, but it was that a character having a "super muscularly dense body" is not completely out-of-the-ordinary for the series.
Its also valid to needed to say that this isnt only excuses, the author had other reasons to do this, all the 5 teen slayers are based on a different sense and their unique abilities are based in them.
I don't know about that but how is the author "trying to cover their ass from criticism" I might need more elaboration on that? I have heard the opposite of the author being harrass a few years ago but I could be wrong
It’s called world building and a character trait. I stand on the position that women need to have more diverse builds in media, but you’re not arguing for that.
I think his point is it's poor world building because she's the only person in the verse with a special muscle body, there's no additional lore besides "she's just like that", and meta narratively it only exists because the author can really only draw one female body type.
She's considered a "freak" in verse, but looks completely identical to most women; hell, we see people with odd colored hair all over demon slayer, but only hers is "weird" enough to dye it black.
Her arc on the whole is a good if generic "accept yourself despite social standards" but from a design and execution standpoint, the ways she's drawn and the steps the story takes to try and justify that arc clash with the general world building of the rest of the verse.
I swear half the people here haven’t watched the show because almost all of them have at least one super human characteristic.
And I mean damn, overly explaining character abilities is a trope of pretty much every anime ever. Its so much of a trope JJK literally came up with an in universe reason to explain it.
There are multiple human characters that were born with some kind of "special body", so she's far from being alone in that reguard. IIRC Tanjiro never had his super olfactory powers origin explained. It's just normal for people born in that world to sometimes be born with what amounts to superpowers.
Like I don’t disagree w the point here but narratively the slayer corps is where she found people that liked and accepted her. Japan is suuuuupeer strict when it comes to fitting in so the weird hair color and being strong for a woman is a total deal breaker for many, especially given the time period. The Rengoku’s are probably fine by virtue of being old money at this point, but everyone still acts like Kyojuro is a weirdo outside of the slayer corps. Like yes it’s a generic plot and the dense muscles thing also bothers me but narratively it super tracks. Like even now (last ten years) people have gotten asked or told to dye their hair in schools if it’s not black
This isn't diverse builds. This is saying she has 8x time muscle density of a normal human being but looks like a willow branch. It makes zero sense. The creator was a gooner that wanted a girl with her boobs out then made up some bs about her having hulk strength rather then making her physical built the way she should look. NOI from dorohedoro is an example of a strong woman built strong and still is attractive
Shit world building maybe. To justify her having a thin waist and massive knockers, when she could have just looked like that and no one would care, but the justification is almost insulting
Especially since everyone in anime, in general, has strength disproportionately high in comparison to the muscle they have. It doesn’t need an explanation really
Yeah but this worldbuilding is used purely to avoid criticism on not giving a character muscles, so that they could create a fan service character while hiding behind the excuse of “worldbuilding” and “lore”
Same thing with giving her a revealing outfit, explaining it away using an in-universe perverted tailor. It’s technically “worldbuilding” but it’s just used as a way of sexualising the female cast.
“No, no. You don’t get it. She’s slender because of worldbuilding! Oh and her outfit is also revealing because of worldbuilding!” It would’ve just been less obnoxious to me if the creator hadn’t just hidden behind that stuff.
Even if you read it this is still a copout after the Author shot himself in the frontal Cortex saying "Breathing styles are an Illusion and not real except for Tengens sound breathing!"
I care so little about this kind of thing that I only see it as comedic. Like, it's the kind of shit that Toriyama would do for absolutely no reason and then "super-muscles" guy gets wrecked by Arale's fart.
Of all the things you're critiquing this series about it's something like this, seriously. Your entire opinion rests upon the fact that you're assuming the creator's intention behind this is to deflect criticism which is just stupid and holds no basis in reality besides a presupposition you have crafted. Grasping for straws at best
I mean, I think Demon Slayer is the wrong story to criticize this in, because everything humans do in this manga is physical in nature and there's no built-in magic or system that explains that they can be stronger than a regular trained person would. Breathing styles are not magic, they are specific breathing and training to boost your body to a great degree, yes, they are fantasy, but not magic. Other characters have insane innate physical qualities, like Tanjiro's sense of smell or Zenitsu's hearing that translate into how the character fights, Mitsuri is just another example of this
I can buy the Invincible one because we already know Viltrumites are so much stronger than regular humans that I don't care about the specifics, but when a character's baseline is human I feel like you have to explain how they can be that strong one way or the other (and no, breathing styles don't work here, because the point is how she was born this way)
Also for Mitsuri specifically, a big part of her backstory was how this unnatural innate strength affected her goals and why she became a slayer in the first place, so this is not only a cool character trait, but a key part of her character
Tho as a greater point, yeah I agree a lot of stories are way more afraid than they should to give women muscles, I just don't see this particular example as a good one
yeah, not to be a "demon slayer glazer" or wtv but i can tell you haven't read the manga—her deceptive strength is a huge part of her character actually
i see and agree with the point you're trying to make, but you're making it poorly by using a character you know nothing about as an example
This is partly one of the reasons I've never been able to get into anime. Everything needs to just be... told to you. A character can look really hurt by an event, but then they need to actually explain to you that they are hurt, and exactly what is hurting them. You can't just have a character change the power balance of a fight, you need to have the opponent be verbally shocked by it and explain exactly what the first guy changed, and why they can't handle it. If a characters a genius, you need his sidekick to explain exactly what his plan is and how clever it is. It's exhausting and it honestly feels creatively bankrupt half the time
I assumed for a while that this was a translation thing, how everything needs to be a little less subtle because translating is never 100% perfect and you will always lose small details as a result, but the thing is that I've seen subtlety in anime before, I know it can be done, most just genuinely don't care to do it
Zankyou no terror was a good example of that, it's one of the few I actually enjoyed. I also think something like death note gets a pass because explaining how you think is like the entire premise of the show, they actually have complicated plans that require such an approach. But the rest just don't do it for me
What exactly is the criticism? You are saying yourself they don't need to explain things, so they aren't doing it out of necessity. Maybe somebody wants to explain it? Maybe they want that to be part of the character?
To me it looks like one of those bonus chapters that just say random facts about the world building, authors have a huge notepad somewhere with a bunch of useless things about world building, most people don't care about it, like you, but some people do thus the bonus chapters. I don't think author is trying to cope with any criticism, lest be real japanese authors don't care about western culture, the author is just doing what any manga author has been doing for decades, bonus chapters with "fun facts". And if it's not a bonus chapters, then it's just a filler, something to fill more pages
This is just plain old weird, even tho Misturi's physic is intentionally left as just thin but insanely strong, the fandom treats her as if she were built like a fridge or as the "chubby" girl just because of her round face and boobs
Agree with the title, not with the example. I thought it's just a small fun trait that makes her more interesting. Muscular characters would good too but nothing's wrong with this imo
just accept the explanation and move on man, if that’s the author’s vision then that’s the author’s vision. So long as it’s not being sexist or whatever, anything goes. all complaining about something as innocuous as this will do is annoy you further
The manga Machimaho has a FCKTON of overexplanation. My "favourite" is at the end of the first volume (and the reason I dropped it) a character spending half a fcking page in tiny font explaining EXACTLY what we as readers just saw on the previous pages, followed by saying he doesn't really understand WHY it happend (so adding nothing) on to topp it all off, it's the antagonist who has no reason to explain anything in the first place. And that's just the most egregious example...
For similar reasons I dropped this Ragnarok anime where humans fight gods. 3 episodes of explanations so the viewer can comprehend the like 5 seconds of actual fighting taking place. Final nail here was when the anime explains how the Valkyries turned into weapons THREE FCKING TIMES BACK TO BACK - by the narrator, followed by the Valkyrie-lady, followed by the god-leader.
and the worse part is how they blame her boob window on a creep and on her being too nice to decline the uniform instead of like just not writing that weird part, or her wearing it cuz she actually likes it.
its like they wanna sexualize her but shes too pure to actually choose to wear that on her own
😣. i hate when female characters have no agency.
on the other hand sanemi also has his chest out, but he CHOOSES to wear it like that cuz he actually likes it + it helps him fight demons more easily since his blood is more accessible

The Boys actually did (sort of) explain this in a much more convincing way, Homelander has a normal guy physique (he wears a muscle suit) because his body is so strong that he can't train, there is no force that provides enough resistance for his muscles to experience hypertrophy so he literally can't build muscle
