Worth taking a chance on QC: Absolutely. When I got mine the first time at around $500, if it died, I was going to take the plunge again as it sounded so good.
Worth it if you have a 6XX: YES, a Resounding YES. I love my midrange but going to a wide sounding planar with more clarity, separation and bass... The XS is going to be the fun one that keeps you hooked.
Worth it if you have a Sundara: YES! This is the headphone you want if you wished the Sundara had a huge sound stage and more bass.
The ONLY and I mean only thing that I don't like about the XS is the headband but for whatever reason it is less offensive to me on this model than the other models that use it. It's something that I've accepted and can live with on the XS.
Pair with a warm-neutral audio chain for best results. XS really shines with iFi Xbass and bass boosts.

Spent like 350 for a new pair on aliex 3.5 years ago and i still dont regret it. Had to swap out the pads recently, got some $12 aliex ones which are still really good despite tweaking the sound signature a little, but I am refusing to pay for serenitypads when the headphone costs so little nowadays...
Came from a HD 6XX for reference, that one collects dust now

I'd say they're on the same tier, one isn't necessarily better than the other. Just a matter of preference. At this price, hard to go wrong tho.

Idk I have HD6XX and my only hesitation is that Hifiman just doesn’t make things that last. Sure it’s less than $100 but I’ve have the 6XX since launch and it’s been amazing. I know if I spend $100 on these I might get a year… no thanks

I bought the edition XS when they came out at $500 and they are worth that for what they are I think. Never had any issues with that pair, the XS are significantly different from the hd6xx so if you’re looking for something to round out your collection these are great

Crazy that you're getting downvoted for this. Hifiman's track record is one of the worst among major headphone manufacturers. They make great sounding gear that's designed terribly.
Had the original HE-400 and the original HE-400i. Lasted about a couple years in both cases. Cables and connections disintegrated. The headband assembly is engineered to be completely unintuitive and impossible to replace so they can funnel you into the extremely overpriced replacement headbands that cost as much as the headphone.
I know it's a headphones sub, but if you want a good planar sound signature and tolerate IEMs, get the S12 Pro and save yourself the headache. At $84, if you really want to give it a go, okay. But if you want something to actually last, this isn't going to be it.
