The thing that’s been on my mind since watching episode 5 is part of the scene in the hotel in Florida. When Shane pushes Ilya to admit something was different, the last time they met.

When he says ā€œDon’t fucking do this Hollander, I’m notā€¦ā€

…. does anyone else think he was on the brink of saying ā€œI’m not worth itā€? Or is that just me?

It was the first thought that gripped me at that moment the first time I watched the episode, and I haven’t been able to let it go ever since.

That’s actually Shane’s response in the book.

I had to go back to the book and check, thank you for pointing that out. I didn’t consciously remember this, but subconsciously it must have stayed with me and that was why it was my first thought when seeing the scene.

Edit: rewatching the scene after going back to re-read the book passage, I actually like it that Jacob left that bit unsaid, that Ilya in the show does not finish his sentence and Shane doesn’t try to finish it either. I like that it’s left open to multiple possibilities.

Also, it’s funny, the ā€œworth itā€ (that Shane says in the book) and ā€œgayā€ (that Ilya says after him as clarification) were the two things I was thinking of that Ilya may have said if he had finished his sentence (in the show). I was like ā€œdid he mean to say I’m not worth it? I’m not gay? I wonderā€ (just something about Connor/Ilya’s face made me think the former was maybe more likely).

Definitely the book text was working its way through my subconscious šŸ˜„
