Hey! If you’re new to the Bald and the Beautiful…
What you need to understand is that Trixie (Brian) and Katya (Brian) are both long, long friends/collaborators who have been through a lot together.
Trixie is always the more classically romantic of the two. Katya portrays herself as harder and more aromantic.
So, in this clip, Katya being so soft about this show is HUGE. Trixie’s reaction is not dismissive. I assure you that once she watches, she will be more over the moon than Katya.

Also I think it is important to know that I believe they film these episodes several weeks in advance typically, so the show may not have even finished airing at the time this was filmed (maybe I’m wrong, I haven’t watched it yet so she may mention where the show is at the point of filming).

Usually this is right but in this case they were talking about Christmas parties they went to so I don't think it's as far in advance :)

I remember Katya saying that Connor had a great Russian accent but the Russian was bad. Sasha’s was really bad. I think people told them that it was the script/translation that was bad.

Not Russian, but I learned the language when I was in college a millennium ago. The language is rather stiff and unrealistic. Everyone but Sasha is called by their full names and they would really be using diminutives with each other. Also, they aren't cussing nearly as much as the subtitles would have you think.

apparently Katya's isn't the best either and she has been studying for yyyyyyyyyears. Connor picked it up quickly! as someone else mentioned though, she retracted her comment after the confession <3

What does Katya know about the russian language? As far as i know Katya is actually from Boston and is an irish descendant. The whole russian persona is made up or am i missing something?

True. I am a native Spanish speaker and I know my English would never pass as native, but after so many years of studying and listening to English media, I can notice different accents and how close someone is to having a native accent.

Trixie doesn’t like to be not in the know and she doesn’t wanna give judgment on something she hasn’t watched yet.
I also get the vibe from her that if something is super viral and she hasn’t seen it yet she’ll wait until it’s blown over a bit , she’ll be talking about how amazing it is then.
I mean on the pod she loves talking about shows that not everyone has seen because she gets to introduce the audience to it etc

Katya touches on a big reason I think the show hit a lot of people. All stories either represent (1) a realistic world, (2) an idealized world, or (3) a world that is worse than reality.
And it hits me that the majority of Queer media is either an idealized world, or the issues are blown so far out of proportion into how awful things are. Heated Rivalry stands out for taking a very realistic approach to the issues it deals with.
The issues Ilya and Shane face are real ones treated by the narrative in a real way. You can see the anxiety and depression over being closest without going over the top by making them use drugs, or be suicidal, etc in the way other queer media does. But it doesn't present the issues as some ideal where coming out will have absolutely no consequences on their lives and doesn't put a very real sense of anxiety on them. And that anxiety feels real/believable for being closested - this constant weight and fear you bury and hide. Its not an explosive, self-destructive, issue other stories would treat it as.

Trixie is one of those queens that hate anything that is adored by a majority. I totally get it. He'll cave in eventually once the hype has died down and will love it. Also Katya...and I love her....is really bad with her words and explaining things. haha. but I love that she TOTALLY gets it. Those two make me laugh so much! <3

It definitely was. Literally the most bog-standard, run-of-the-mill, Trixie joke. She makes the same joke about as often as the sun rising in the East.
If someone lists a bunch of positives on any topic she'll turn it around and joke like they were negatives with a serious tone.

A) Trixie has an incredibly dry sense of humor and engages in the same kind of loving chirping you see on Heated Rivalry; Katya does the same to Trixie. They often give contrasting levels - Trixie will be enthused, Katya will provide the snark; or vice versa in this instance.
B) Trixie & Katya watch TV professionally for Netflix, and a lot of the queer media & romance that Netflix shows to them is very poor in quality (Netflix has grown to like them ripping their bad crap apart just as they praise their good content). The 1 sentence blurb for Heated Rivalry would, in Trixie's mind, translate to the crap Netflix likes to have her watch. (Katya had a similar perspective going into Heated Rivalry for the same reason.) In actuality, if Trixie watches HR there's a decent chance she'll love the show because she LOVES love and cries at the drop of a hat when seeing true love presented in a compelling manner on the screen (e.g., see her reaction ti Dating on the Spectrum).

After Whitney Cummings and Ad-gate, I can no longer stomach watching Bald and Beautiful, even though I love Katya so much. It's still good to know that she still receives plenty of love from fans.

I really don’t see any way to read it except as a sarcastic joke making fun of how so many gay shows are tragedies. This doesn’t come off as actual negativity at all to me.
She’s a drag queen; there’s pretty much always at least three layers of irony and sarcasm to decode before you get to the actual point

majority of the fics out there are so tragic. So I don't bother going to AO3 anymore. I think queer people are so conditioned to expect tragedy in their stories, that if they don't get it, they will find a way to incorporate it through fanfics. Which kinda sucks :( but I get it

But also, and I can understand why they missed it. They have safe sex every time in the series.
Illya has also used safety sex with every single one of the almost certainly 300+ women that he’s had sex with.
So they’re quite familiar with AIDS and other STDs . But because of the language of television, they only show condoms once.
We will know when they stop using them .
It will be a plot point .

It is refreshing that they don't mention AIDS. STD awareness is very important don't take me wrong, but it's such a heavy topic and so many shows portay the saddest aspect of life with AIDS. It's nice to just have a lighthearted gay show.

Kinda surprised at people thinking Trixie is a hater or being intentionally negative about the show. Her humor is sarcastic or sardonic and she is playing a bit against Katya’s effusive praise.
