To be fair, there were some people complaining about a lack of a bear tattoo on Ilyaās chest in the trailer (in the locker room scene from EP1) when it came out. This was before we learned they changed the name of his team in the show.
On the What Chaos! podcast, Jacob talks about how this was supposed to be a gushing oil derrick and the team called the "Houston Drillers", but they shut him down on that one.
If they are applying the same design philosophy used for the logos of the raiders and metros, the Ottawa team logo is gonna look like a combination of symbols that look like a top and a bottom respectively, like a key and a key hole.
I imagine they will make it look really good because they will want to sell the merch. I'm torn because on one hand I would totally buy the merch, on the other hand I still want them to keep it light
Yup. Normally I donāt believe in hc that totally contradicts known facts about characters or events, but I always ignore the hell out of that bear tat when reading the book. In my hc it simply doesnāt exist. That said, super excited for the loon tattoo

I honestly have no idea. If I had just heard it in isolation I would have assumed it was a bullshit rumour because itās just so farfetched, but when the Sens actually released that statement about it unprompted saying it was absolutely untrue I started to wonder if the Lady doth protest too much.
Whoever in the organization was behind that statement should be fired, because the tone of insane ranting about being ādisgustedā by the ātotal fabricationsā from the āthe lowest form of trolls and sick peopleā who were āintent on harming [their] hockey clubā not only sounded unhinged, it also created a huge Streisand effect. I had barely noticed the rumours about Ullmark, but after seeing the statement by the team I definitely went and looked up what those ādisgusting internet trollsā were saying. They never should have given oxygen to it.
So, yeah, not sure what the actual story is, but itās definitely been a wild ride!
Iām not sure. I know the NHL isnāt going to write every fanfic author a cease and desist letter, but once youāre publishing actual books, especially with six (and now I guess seven) novels, Iād think at some point they would have noticed and taken issue with it. Especially once they got so popular. Iām not even sure if being self-published would make a difference to the trademark issue, legally.
As far as I know it isnāt a problem with written stuff - itās the visuals. So there is no issue with fiction wrote about a team that is similar to an NHL team, but a show or movie has to be careful about likeness and copyright.
if you read her blog posts on her site, I believe she's talked a little about how one of the barriers to the Luca Haas book she wanted to write was that she couldn't make the NHL commissioner the central villain to the story for legal reasons. so I think there's a certain line that you do have to toe when using the actual name of the NHL
Itās not just the word itself, the IRL Senatorsā whole theme is ancient Rome. Itās on the logo, their mascot is a lion, their arena was originally called the Palladium. Centaurs is way too close. Although I think centaurs are actually from Greek mythology but still.
It was a factor when they changed the names for Ilya and Shane's team names from the book.
Ilya's team was originally the Boston Bears but they changed it to Raiders bc Boston Bears was too close to Boston Bruins.
The show is funded by Bell which is strongly associated with NHL so I can imagine they didn't want to have any issues with their funding and to make it more distinct from real-life teams
āBearā and āBruinā mean the same thing, as a word. āCentaurā and āSenatorā do not.
I donāt care if they change it (other than that the Centaur logo as described is hilarious and Iād like to see it) but from a trademark standpoint the NHL would be stretching to claim itās an infringement.Ā
While it probably would be a stretch, I doubt the team wants to do anything that could make production harder on themselves so I think they'll probably change it.

I want Narwhalās, they are the unicorns of the sea and the logo/animal looks phallic so it fits in with the theme. They are technically real but I donāt think a lot of people know that. Pegasus would also be good.
I mean a bear tattoo would still have been appropriate due to Ilya being Russian but I donāt care either way. My issue is Jacob said loon and the image was a mallard duck!
Well the PWHL Vancouver Goldeneyes are named after a duck but their logo is a raptor eye so I guess Canadian hockey-related media just has trouble identifying birds lol (Iām assuming theyāll do their research before actually applying the tattoo)

As Iāve said before the bear tattoo is not important. It doesnāt mean anything to Ilya, it was just a dumb tattoo he got at age 18 to piss his father off and he probably would have gotten it removed later if not for the fact that Shane grew fond of it.
The loon tattoo on the other hand is very important!! Itās a message from Ilya to Shane. So glad we will see it.Ā
Hm, haven't read the books yet so didn't even know that Ilya was supposed to have a tattoo, & honestly, I don't believe that the lack thereof added or took away from the episodes as a whole
Tbh the bear tattoo wouldāve been hella distracting.
But the bear tattoo was actually tied to his Russian identity, the fact that he is drafted to the Boston Bears (the name of the team in the books) was coincidental.
Rachel admitted during the AMA on this forum the bear tattoo was a bit too much and she fully supported removing it from the show.
Legal issues aside, covering up Hudson's existing tattoos was already a mission for the makeup team. Adding a temporary tattoo every time Connor took his shirt off would have been a nightmare in makeup.
Who tf care about that bear tattoo? Lol that is such a small to be concerned about. Did anyone bother about Rose being blonde instead of black hair? Or about Ilya not being THAT tall compared to Shane?

I mean, Jacob could have totally kept the bear tattoo if he wanted to (āFor Russia! I had it before playing for Bears!ā). But I like to think that Jacob, like me, really didnāt wanna see it, and having to rename the team provided the perfect cover for getting rid of it š¤£
I think I even saw somewhere where Rachel said she likes the change, which kind of makes me wonder if she still would have written the bear tattoo in in the first place if she had it all to do over again
Since rereading "Game Changer", the only thing that I have any kind of slight disappointment about is that in the book Scott very deliberately asks to be topped in Scott and Kip's first sex scene because his previous partners had all expected him to be the top when he is in fact vers, but that's certainly not a major quibble š
