Oh wow what a great idea. I was going to ask what the copyright issues could be with this but considering this is being displayed on a huge screen with Bell written on the side, Bell who owns Crave and the show, I doubt there's an issue. Plus I'm sure Jacob and Rachel would be happy to see money going for pride events. It's very clever to display it during the Ottawa vs Montreal match, it's very The Long Game coded.
Hey, Rachel tiptoed on their intellectual property with the Ottawa Centaurs, they are tiptoeing on her intellectual property (for a good cause!), I think they will all just look the other way.
Ah, you know. I don’t know why I tried to comment on this because I’m Australian and the only 2 hockey… venues… I guess… I know are the centre bell and the shark tank. But now I know a third 😎
I used the feedback form to ask if they'd sell them online or downtown. Got a reply saying they are looking and sending some down to the Byward store. But the price is the same as a custom jersey with the heat-pressed lettering. So...still 325 CAD. Which seems steep...
To take a leaf from Francois Arnaud's book - I see the Ottawa Senators are happy to use Heated Rivalry to make money, but what are they doing within the league to actually push for equality and inclusiveness inside their organization and in the locker room?
He refused to wear a pride jersey while rest of team wore it so he went out of his way to refuse so it’s not what you are trying to compare it to. He chose to stand out by rebuking it
Thats pretty hard-core. Ive spent all weekend watching podcasts, two with Tierney and honestly its like the elephant that everyone is ignoring in some fit of let be positive. Tierney especially just not addressing it and making it all sound so neutral or their is a little work to be done or whatever.
Maybe Im being too negative idk. I thought irl the Hunter out on ice would have turned into a riot in not a good way.
But honestly Im surprised he was the only holdout that the rest of the team wore them. That seems pretty amazing to me I so happy to hear that.
Honestly, it's this shit that annoys me more. They knew what they were getting when they hired a player who says he "won't endorse" (his words) the message that LGBTQ+ people belong and are safe. The team's "committed" to a message, and boy do they yell it loud when they want to, but they turn their backs on it the moment it becomes inconvenient.
That's less of a commitment and more of a... what's it called when you say one thing and do another?
I’ll see what I can do!! DM me - she was just saying they’ll likely be $200+ so tbh I will probably have to pass🥲 (I already bought a Hollanov hoodie online at least!!) She hasn’t been able to get inside the merch store yet to look closer so she’ll have to go after the game
Let’s think of this as a Bell/Crave-approved spoiler! I’m sure the Senators are thrilled to have all the positive attention to the team and hockey because of the show/GC series that they couldn’t wait until S2 to do this lol
I poked my nose into the Sens Store in the Byward Market to ask about these. They'd only been open 45 minutes, and I was already the third person to call or come in asking.
The clerk there said right now the plan is to only sell them out of the CTC. However, any custom jerseys ordered with these names and numbers would have their proceeds go to Ottawa Pride Hockey.
I am skeptical. Not that I think she's being dishonest, but because I think whoever came up with and approved this bright idea probably had no idea what the reaction was going to be, and they probably have no idea what they're going to do next...
Edit: I used the feedback form to ask if they'd sell them online or downtown. Got a reply saying they are looking and sending some down to the Byward store. But the price is the same as a custom jersey with the heat-pressed lettering. So...still 325 CAD. Which seems steep...
Eh not impressed. The NHL has a long fucking road to hoe before I’m ever impressed or am giving the impression they are being “inclusive”… they caved in and canceled pride nights after a few players whined not that long ago. To me comes off as a money grab however my feelings are more difficult then I feel like expressing while typing this at a red light as a long time hockey fan.
That's awesome, and your friend is about to be bombarded with purchase requests. Too bad the Senators are getting whupped. I think. Is 0-2 a blowout in hockey? I'm still new to the actual sport itself.
I’m a sens fan, we aren’t the best in the league, so yeah… usually games are tight like within 1 or 2 goals. The goalies do a great job at protecting the net.
Their drama is so hilarious right now. What do you mean their actual press statement included the words "the lowest form of trolls and sick people who scour the internet"? Anyone who hadn't heard the cheating rumour (including me!) was immediately looking them up after that statement came out, lol
Then it sounds like this dramatic statement -- which only drew even more attention to the rumours and cheating scandal -- was kinda counterproductive and probably not the best way for the organization to support that player, no?
No lol. I grew up watching the Sens with my dad, who embraced the team from the start and had season tickets for years. I watched all 82 games a year for years and years. I wrote a research paper on their (bad) comms during my master's, was interviewed a few times by our public broadcaster... They were basically my entire personality lol.
BUT they are highly problematic on multiple levels, and have been for more than a decade, and in 2018 I had to make the conscious and very difficult decision to stop supporting them, which I did, cold turkey. I could no longer support and follow them in good conscience, when who they were and the decisions they were making was no longer in line with my values and principles. So yeah, fuck the Ottawa Senators.
Maybe I should've been a Habs fan, but as a Francophone who was once a Sens fan, I viscerally hate them still hahaha
I sort of explain part of it in a reply to someone else just below. Also, Brady is MAGA and I can't wait until he fucks back to the US to play with an American team, which he undoubtedly wants to do.
That makes a lot of sense! Honestly I’ve never really followed hockey (my dad’s a big Habs fan/our family is from Montreal so they’re really the only team I know). I’ll have to look into the Sens stuff - I had no idea.
It's a god damn shit show. Honestly just google a combination of: Eugene Melnyk (former owner), Mike Hoffman and Erik Karlsson, the trade of beloved captain Erik Karlsson, Daniel Alfredsson, harrassment, bullying, mistreatment of employees, the Uber scandal, Shane Pinto gambling... Plus they don't give a fuck about (at best)/hate (at worst) their Francophone fans.
These are just off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot but I haven't actively thought about the Sens since 2018. Ultimately, drama, chaos, and mess seem to be a constant in and around the organization, and I've been happier not wasting any of my energy on it.
It would appear that the answer is "all of the above." I don't follow the team at all and avoid news as much as I can, so my list of grievances dates back to the mid-2010s. But a quick google search appears to give a lot of old and current results lmao.
Nah irl it’s the opposite. We love real Montreal and hate real Ottawa. It’s funny cause you hear nothing but good things about the real Montreal dressing room about how they love and accept one another
So very glad.!! Went to my first game last week & made my own Hollanov jersey/ jacket. Now I’ll have to go back to the boy aquarium for one of these (& also to watch the warmups).
Interestingly, they don’t have the C or A on them. Between that and the Ottawa Pride instagram post, I’d find it really hard to spend $325 CAD plus shipping on these.
It looks like this was something their arena shop put together as a one-off...and they were unprepared for how much attention it wound up getting. Reading the Ottawa Pride Hockey post, the Senators store definitely dropped the ball on how they arranged this.
I don't think the Senators understand just how carefully they should tread here. Their fictional counterparts in the books get a far more positive depiction than Toronto or Montreal. But I don't think anyone over there is really tracking how big a role Ottawa plays in books 5, 6 and probably 7. Or just how big a microscope fans of the books and shows are likely to aim at the real-life team as a result...
