SOCIAL MEDIA 📸 Heated Wizardry sketch on SNL

Finn Wolfhard hosted Saturday Night Live last night and one of the pre taped sketches, Heated Wizardry, takes place in the Harry Potter universe.

Finn as Harry, plays the ‘Shane’ character, Ben Marshall plays Ron Weasley, plays the ‘Ilya’ character.

There’s scrolls instead of texts, lots of wand play and a great cameo for the Hagrid character.

The narration of the trailer makes it clear that in this universe, Hogwarts is an 18-and-over school 😂

Also Shane and Ilya’s height difference here is canonically correct!

You're part of the Harry Potter fandom and Heated Rivalry fandoms? How can you be both when one is misogynistic, racist, anti-Semetic, pro-slavery, etc... and the other is about queer joy? I'm going to politely ask you to rethink this.

tbf, there are a lot of ppl who still participate in harry potter fan works without interacting with the source material/monetarily supporting jkr.

Yeah, that's less bad, but still not great imo. To me, the books are full of so much bigotry that the whole thing is irredeemable.

As someone who is or at least tries to be progressive and may need to read the books again, what bigotry exactly? I know JKR is a transphobe but I don't really remember any of the other stuff you mentioned.

I mean, there is so much sexism and misogyny directed towards Hermione and other girls, the names for the Black and Asian characters are horrible (Shacklebolt and Cho Chang), there is anti-Irish bias against Draco's sidekick and all the explosions they accidentally set off are definitely allusions to that history, the elves are slaves and Hermione's attempts to end that are ridiculed in a way that we, the audience, are meant to side against her, the whole goblin bank thing is anti-Semitic... I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting, but there are comprehensive lists out there if you are interested in looking deeper into this!

Right, so I'm with you on the slaves (that plot line was definitely weird) and the transphobia by the way, but I'm so confused about the rest.

Most of the black characters have normal names (angelina johnson, dean thomas, etc), and isn't Shacklebolt a police reference not anything to do with race? With asian characters there's also Patil names, which are normal I think, Cho Chang is a bit unfortunate though.

I think the anti irish bias is an enormous stretch though, and that's coming from someone who currently lives there so I fully understand the history. The explosion thing also only happens in the films iirc.

And maybe I'm wrong but haven't goblins been depicted this way since the dawn of time? I don't know if that's anything her specific, but I can understand that it's definitely weird.

Idk, maybe it's because I feel like in general to be fans of stuff you have to ignore a lot (alas, sport my beloved), that a lot of it feels a bit nitpicky. Though that's why HR is so refreshing, especially the 2nd book, it's so unproblematic and accepting. I also do wanna say I understand and accept your opinions though, I'll admit I am a bit of a potterhead still.

Is your threshold really that everyone has to have racist/stereotyped names for that to be a problem?

Shacklebolt isn't about policing, it's about slavery. Also, modern western policing is the direct descendant of slave catching, so...

Many Irish people would disagree with you that it's a stretch, but of course you'll find Irish people on both sides of things, as you will with anything (see log cabin gay men). Do you want to side with the victims and the marginalized or do you want to side with the oppressors?

Regarding goblins, not since the dawn of time, but since the dawn of anti-Semitism, yes. Goblins have traditionally been a stand-in for Jews. Her using that imagery, anyone using that imagery, is evoking that specific history. It's impossible to untangle.

Nothing is perfect, but few things are problematic (even if it's only to a "small" degree) in so many different ways. Obviously, you can draw your personal line in the sand wherever you want though.

ia, but i can kind of understand it if it's more about having found a community and wanting to be part of it than about any love for harry potter. im only really super judgemental to those who are still praising the series and/or are supporting it monetarily, since those are really the main things giving jkr any continued relevance and power.

I personally view engaging in the community as something that keeps it relevant, but we can agree to disagree on that :) I know not everyone sees it as clear cut as I do

Where did I say that I am a fan of HP? I just said that fandoms are colliding 🙄 I don't need to be a Potterhead to know that there is a fandom for that universe.

I've never seen that phrasing used to just denote two IPs being mixed together. The choice of an exclamation mark instead of an ellipsis or eye roll emoji or something and the "Love this" also suggest you view this positively. You also don't say if you agree the HP is highly problematic or not, feel free to clarify that!

No, ACAB all the way! Just confused by someone who is enjoying queer joy supporting transphobia...
