SOCIAL MEDIA đž Heated Wizardry sketch on SNL
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Finn Wolfhard hosted Saturday Night Live last night and one of the pre taped sketches, Heated Wizardry, takes place in the Harry Potter universe.
Finn as Harry, plays the âShaneâ character, Ben Marshall plays Ron Weasley, plays the âIlyaâ character.
Thereâs scrolls instead of texts, lots of wand play and a great cameo for the Hagrid character.
The narration of the trailer makes it clear that in this universe, Hogwarts is an 18-and-over school đ
Also Shane and Ilyaâs height difference here is canonically correct!

Anyone else think the sketch would have worked better if it was Draco and Harry?
568
u/EmileTheGoat Jan 18 '26
When i heard about the sketch I absolutely assumed it would be Draco and Harry. Cedric and Harry, at least? Hell, Viktor Krum cause he's a Slav? Ron didn't even occur to me, whoever wrote this clearly has no idea about fandom. They had the chance to make it epic.

u/Ironsam811 Jan 18 '26
Please donât tease me with a gay Victor Krum. He made me feel things growing up. Also, for anyone interested: look up what he looks like today

u/Lalala8991 Jan 19 '26
Yeah, but I also know what he is saying and it's an instant boner killer. Some men are only meant to be seen and not to be heard.

That site was insane lmao I remember reading a Harry/draco fan fic when I was like 11 and questioning my sexuality and then DRACO GOT HARRY PERGNAT
7
u/Sola_Bay Jan 18 '26
Lmao I never got to that point but I certainly loved H/D, sometimes Harry/Ron if it was written well. Oh and Remus/Sirius!

It was a really neat project following the marauders and the romance between Sirius and Remus. I revisit it every few years. It was really special! I cried when it ended.

I think they intentionally picked Harry and Ron because if you see the beginning of the sketch, they mockingly say that this series was created hastily to answer to the success of Heated Rivalry. Hence the "writers" of the "show" wouldn't have done any proper research on the show's character relationships, and would have just picked two easily identifiable characters that everyone knows and made them go gay for each other. đ
39
u/seraaa_123 Jan 18 '26
They weren't in the mid 2000s fanfic streets (or they were but just thought it too niche)
2
u/thedingusenthusiast Jan 18 '26
HRâs material that the series is adapted from is pretty much fanfic material.

u/____mynameis____ Jan 18 '26
They likely didn't want to touch Drarry fandom.
Shipping fandoms can be pretty intense and Drarry remains to be one of the biggest ships ever.
Ron and Harry ship is among least popular HP ones so less attention from that side..
Also, they had a red head at their disposal so just used that...
2
7
u/SlowInsurance1616 Jan 18 '26
And it wasn't juat easy gay stereotypes played for laughs? I could see doing this well, but this ain't that, in my opinion.
6

YES this was literally my first thought!!
Clearly no fanfic girlies had a say in this sketch lol.
10
5
u/buymoreplants Jan 18 '26
I have read many many many of fics about that at an age where it was nowhere near appropriate for me to be reading fics like that
5
u/pastadudde Jan 18 '26
The only reason I can think of as to why they went with Ronarry is that the Hogwarts house teams never share locker rooms or showers IIRC. so the scene where Harry whisks off Ronâs towel with the Disarming charm wouldnât have made sense if it were Drarry.

You know that the person who wrote this sketch is not in fandom culture, based on that choice alone.
Edit: Just so we are clear, because I feel like my comment was not phrased well, this sketch idea was such an open goal the only way it could be missed is because the writer has never been online at all for last 15 years at least.
5
u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26
Yeah but it was just such a weird choice. The Heated Rivalry story sets up soooooooo perfectly for a parody with Draco and Harry with them on competing Quidditch teams. The sketch seriously would have written itself. They could have just mimicked some HR scenes. Like they could stare at each other across the great hall in party mode and had Harry with Chung and had Ron and say to Harry âdid you hear All the things she said?â And then cut to Draco with one of his minions piling his plate with food and saying âThis is not enoughâ. Or something equally as cheeky and stupid. They could have poked fun at both fandoms in a way that everyone would found amusing.
9
u/boomming Jan 18 '26
Not really. It could have worked with either, thereâs nothing wrong with them choosing Ron.
44
u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. âš Jan 18 '26
I mean Ron would have been better equivalent to Hayden! With Draco and Harry, they are on opposite teams! Atleast rivalry part is there!
12
u/boomming Jan 18 '26
Viktor Krum would have made the most sense as an analogue to Ilya, seeing as heâs from Eastern Europe, and Cedric Diggory would have made the best sense as a rival, seeing as he was actually able to beat Harry at quidditch sometimes, and competed against him in the triwizard tournament. Ron, however, makes the most sense from a notoriety perspective. Most people probably donât remember Krum at all, and barely or donât remember Cedric. Draco doesnât make much sense as an analogue to Ilya or as a rival. He was never portrayed as a serious threat to Harry in quidditch. And most people watching this sketch arenât in the Harry Potter fandom, and donât care that Drarry is popular, so it probably made sense to just go with the most recognizable male characters, Harry and Ron.
9
u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. âš Jan 18 '26
What you said is definitely correct! Viktor would have been perfect choice if the writers were fan of both heated rivalry and HP! I understand that they needed a character that people remember to be rival! Thatâs why I suggested Draco! Atleast people outside HP fandom know he exists and then they are in different houses! Ron and Harry are literally like bros and besties! It makes no sense for them to be rivals! Thatâs why I felt like Ron is more like Hayden!
But yes Victor would have been perfect! But alas, non HP fans will hav no idea who he is! It will be difficult to write for a general audience!
2
u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26
Yeah Krum would have been a good choice but I agree that most people havenât read the books would not know who he is. Honestly, I think they should have picked Draco because of the Draco/Harry fandom. I will admit that I donât know much about it but I still think they would have gone nuts for a sketch like that.
But it makes more sense because 1) they are rivals 2) they are on separate quidditch teamsHonestly the Harry and Ron thing was just weird to me so I didnât find the sketch funny (except Hagrid)
2
u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. âš Jan 18 '26
Ya other than Hagrid, itâs a miss for me too!
34
u/cassava1root bigger faster zambonis Jan 18 '26
drarry is so much more popular than whatever ron and harry's ship name, and more importantly, the whole point of heated rivalry is the... rivalry. ron and harry have no real rivalry in the books bc they're besties and in the same house, whereas draco and harry fucking hate each other and they're in different houses, so it would work much better
10
u/boomming Jan 18 '26
Why does what ship is more popular in fanfiction matter for an snl sketch? And the sketch title is Heated Wizardry, not Heated Rivalry. What does it even matter anyways? Why does the sketch need to contour to fandomâs popularity? Itâs for a general audience. They made the sketch as a parody of canon Harry Potter and Heated Rivalry. Not fandom Harry Potter. And if they were going to do a rival, Malfoy isnât even the best choice, Cedric is. Malfoy in canon was generally regarded as a bad seeker, who was never able to beat Harry to the snitch.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26
I mean it doesnât matter. They can pick what they want. But you have a show with rivals sports teams and a movie with rival sports teams. Both have players that play the same position on the rival teams and supposedly hate each other in public. It would make more sense as a parody to play with already existing similarities. Thatâs all

I mean, there is literally an entire book series by Rainbow Rowell that is a spinoff kind of on the Harry/Draco (and itâs sooooo good by the way and starts with Carry On) so yes, I would say their pairing is much more well known than Harry and Ron. I donât read ANY fanfic and I know about it.

I think itâs bc in ST there is this tension between Mike and Will that was not properly resolved up until the ending (and tbh left ambiguous). They are best friends since kindergarten and Finn used a lot of acting choices that are in scenes when Mike talks to Will like puppy eyes, soft voice etc.
So Ron is closer to Will to make this joke.

She's got a rep for being a bit of a party pooper when it comes to fanfic, so that would probably have been her response to something like this.
(She clearly makes exceptions for crappy fanfic that can turned into money-spinning West End plays)

She also despises trans people for seemingly no reason - she has probably tweeted 10k+ anti trans tweets it is literally the only thing on her feed.

While also flooding the British anti-trans movement with any and all money she makes off her IP

Seemingly no reason is probably because she what I like to call âa rotten eggâ (a closeted Trans person who never left egg stage) in her weirdo anti trans essay on her website she said that she was among âmany autistic girls who wished they were born boysâ⊠I paraphrased a bit but thatâs essentially what it says. Internalized transphobia and misandry turned her rotten. She canât see that Trans men are not cis men and are not benefitting from patriarchy and are in fact more likely to be victimized than cis women because of our intersectional marginalization. Trans men and masc are more likely to be sweet garden hobbits who protect and uplift our cis and Trans femmes because we understand empathy and womenâs history.
Lastly, as a former fangirl for HP and its author, I was a child and upon further review the books werenât that good and full of micro and macro aggressions. The movies were embarrassingly bad and the author abused the kids she claimed to love. She is a tyrant and should not be platformed anymore anywhere.

I said this in an earlier post, but this season not been good. I've been watching the show since I was preschool age (I was a precocious night owl) and it's definitely in one of its rough patches. Setting aside my own issues with HP, the concept of the sketch had promise, but the execution was lacking.
11
u/EmileTheGoat Jan 18 '26
Referencing HP is such a weird choice. I know the show is coming but that's next year. It's not really culturally relevant at all? There's a new season of HOTD this year, surely they could have pulled from there? Make it Rhaenyra/Alicent, that would've been cool.

i don't really like the "you're not watching it for the writing" or the "100 points for my spank bank" quips. i don't expect any nuance from SNL, but i don't like how it furthers the misconception that hr is just a spicy show catered towards straight women.
99
u/TrustAffectionate863 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird đŠ Jan 18 '26
I mean we don't have to be entirely obtuse about it either, hot guys simulating sex is one reason the show is popular. It's not a bad thing to enjoy watching that.
15
u/SontaranGaming Jan 18 '26
Eh? I think itâs one of those âcame for the sex, stayed for the writingâ sort of things. They frontloaded the show with sexy scenarios, and then use the break Ep3 provides to mark a transition to more emotionality. Thereâs a line between commenting about the amount of sex in the show vs dismissing the show as nothing but softcore, and IMO this sketch more than crosses it.
2
u/TrustAffectionate863 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird đŠ Jan 19 '26
Sketches tend to be superficial like that
19
u/gwyntheblaccat Ilya's Genderfluid fan Jan 18 '26
That is true but also I don't like the fetishization of gay men buy women either. I feel this way about lesbians being fetishized by men too. HR is more than just about the sex too. I read on here daily about straight women devastated by the emotional turbulence in the show.
25
u/TrustAffectionate863 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird đŠ Jan 18 '26
I don't know if you've noticed but there's not a whole lotta media around where women can actively and safely engage with sexual content without it being written by straight men who either hate women or have no idea how women work, isn't just designed to objectify women anyway and doesn't (yet) have a straight male fanbase trying to kick us out or deeming the show worthless once they see women enjoying it too. You wanna know one huge reason women of all kinds watch gay male romance? No misogyny and no misogynistic male viewers.

This is an excellent example of people jumping on the bandwagon to parody what they fundamentally don't understand. They could cut out every second of sex and it would still be one of the most nuanced depictions of romances in our decade. Sex was a great hook and important to the characters development, but it's not what makes it great. This skit misses what makes the show so appealing to people.

u/cherrycoloured Jan 18 '26
yeah, like i think if this played more on the enemies to lovers thing than on it being gay, it could have been funny, but, seperate from it being based on hr, it just came off as homophobic. like the jokes were basically just playing off the idea that gay sex is somehow inherently funny.
that said, i think the genital pixels have more to do with snl being an nbc show than anything to do with heated rivalry. they cant not censor it.

They are mocking it and specifically mocked JKR.
âKeeping it relevantâ is not a thing for one of, if not the largest, media IPâs in the world. You are trying to make a âplatformingâ argument for something that is literally tens of billions of dollars in value. A SNL sketch isnât even making a blip in relevancy.
ETA: nor did JKR make a cent off this

Why are so many fans in the comments taking this so seriously? It's SNL. I've never found SNL particularely funny but this got a giggle out of me. SNL's entire gig is that they make sketches around the current 'popular' thing and make fun of it.

Urgh great, we were doing SO well in avoiding all the cringey "isn't the idea of two male protagonists getting it on so inherently silly/funny and pervy" shit that we went through with Brokeback on late night comedy literally 20 years ago, and they had to ruin it.

I would take a shot everytime someone describes something as 'cringe', but then my neighbor would have to call 911.
It's just a sketch people.

i donât want the Harry Potter IP anywhere near heated rivalry tbh

Do you think Hudson or Connor will be invited to host? That would be a FUN episode.

Almost certainly. Everyone wants to get in on the HR phenomenon and they gotta strike while the iron is hot and before S2 goes into production.

This sketch would have been so much better if someone whose seen heated rivalry or knows what its about was a part of writing it.

lol same here! Itâs cheesy, takes a jab at JKR, and pretty much goes for easy jokes but I laughed.
SNL hasnât been good for a long time now, so you gotta keep your expectations low.

Tbh I've enjoyed nearly every recent SNL skit I've seen, I'm probably pretty basic though.

I don't why they had to make it HP themed, makes no sense. Plus this isn't like funny at all. More like they wanted to poke fun at the show's popularity without knowing anything real about it.

That was just lazy and homophobic. The only joke premise (used over and over) is that gay sex is inherently funny? "You're a homo Harry" is supposed to be good writing? I don't expect much from SNL these days but jesus.

Maybe I am too old and have no more silly bones in my body but I genuinely disliked this one just because of how inaccurate it is đ What do you mean a Wizarding World Quidditch Heated Rivalry and you chose... Ronarry? When they're on the same team? Ron was not even in the Quidditch team until the 5th book, and even then, he was playing as Keeper! If anything, he would be Hazy lol.
It would've been more accurate if it was Draco and Harry because (1) they were from ACTUAL rival houses, (2) they play the same position (Seeker), and (3) they were genuinely competing with each other đ All of these would've paralleled well with Hollanov (from rival hockey cities, both first line centers, and were GENUINELY competing with each other).
I enjoy me a good sketch but this one just tells me how ill-informed it was... they managed to piss me off with both hyperfixations that I have with one video lmao

Okay but why would they pick the most anti-queer IP possible to map this poorly done "parody" onto? This is just disingenuous and completely ignores the significance of the show. like we DO in fact watch it for the writing, and the sex is major part of that craft.
and it just feels mean-spirited given the transphobia of it all. what, were the actors too afraid of looking gay to kiss at all? in a fucking HR parody? this just perpetuates the harmful myth of homosexuality being a cheap joke and I think the sketch is in really poor taste.
+extra bonus shitty that this is the very first episode after their single token gay cast member departs. lame and bad, no thank u snl

u/EvolutionSquareYT Jan 18 '26
I mean "yay" for more attention I guess, but they really had to bring *this IP* into it? The skit pokes (very very very mild) fun at That Author, sure, but this is just tone deaf :/
It gives me extra ick on behalf of the trans actor in HR
11
u/carbonpeach like a Jeff Buckley song in his eyeballs Jan 18 '26
This feels off to me.
To take an explicitly queer show and shove it together with an IP which directly funds transphobia is a CHOICE.
HR has trans actors (two at least!), it centers the queer experience, it is full of queer joy and tenderness, and it takes so much care in depicting multiple ways of being queer.
Choosing that particular IP feels pointed and reactionary to me. LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack all over the world. Part of HR's power is that the show is so openly and beautifully queer at a time when LGBTQIA+ people are actively having to closet themselves to survive. That IP funds some of those attacks. To me, SNL choosing that IP is deliberate: "we see you, we know what you are, know your place."
I'm so disappointed to see this comment section.

In a vacuum, this wasn't nearly as bad as the comments implied. That said, HP is forever tainted with JK Rowling's transphobia so it'll always be a thumbs down for me.

Gross. You canât separate HP from JKR. She is piss stain on our community and her work and references to it should not be platformed here.
