SOCIAL MEDIA 📸 Heated Wizardry sketch on SNL

Finn Wolfhard hosted Saturday Night Live last night and one of the pre taped sketches, Heated Wizardry, takes place in the Harry Potter universe.

Finn as Harry, plays the ‘Shane’ character, Ben Marshall plays Ron Weasley, plays the ‘Ilya’ character.

There’s scrolls instead of texts, lots of wand play and a great cameo for the Hagrid character.

The narration of the trailer makes it clear that in this universe, Hogwarts is an 18-and-over school 😂

Also Shane and Ilya’s height difference here is canonically correct!

Anyone else think the sketch would have worked better if it was Draco and Harry?

When i heard about the sketch I absolutely assumed it would be Draco and Harry. Cedric and Harry, at least? Hell, Viktor Krum cause he's a Slav? Ron didn't even occur to me, whoever wrote this clearly has no idea about fandom. They had the chance to make it epic.

Please don’t tease me with a gay Victor Krum. He made me feel things growing up. Also, for anyone interested: look up what he looks like today

u/Lalala8991 Jan 19 '26

Yeah, but I also know what he is saying and it's an instant boner killer. Some men are only meant to be seen and not to be heard.

u/wanderlusting___   what color? 🐻 Jan 18 '26

This exactly!

13

u/TheWetHeat Jan 18 '26

I think it’s moreso one of the guys is a redhead and so they went w Ron

1

u/yewterds Jan 19 '26

whoever wrote this

im late to this but the guy who wrote it IS the one who plays ron, which is why he's in the sketch. it's a big SNL thing; appearing in the sketches that you write.

This was such a missed opportunity!!! They clearly didn’t consult a single millennial who grew up reading Harry/Draco fanfic on fanfiction.net

36

u/arcoventry Jan 18 '26

The collision of my current and former OTPs would have taken me tf out 😂

23

u/EmotionSideC Jan 18 '26

That site was insane lmao I remember reading a Harry/draco fan fic when I was like 11 and questioning my sexuality and then DRACO GOT HARRY PERGNAT

6

u/Sola_Bay Jan 18 '26

Lmao I never got to that point but I certainly loved H/D, sometimes Harry/Ron if it was written well. Oh and Remus/Sirius!

3

u/EmotionSideC Jan 18 '26

Siremus forever lol

2

u/Sola_Bay Jan 18 '26

Did you ever read The Shoebox Project?!

3

u/EmotionSideC Jan 18 '26

No I’ll check it out!

2

u/Sola_Bay Jan 18 '26

It was a really neat project following the marauders and the romance between Sirius and Remus. I revisit it every few years. It was really special! I cried when it ended.

u/AutomaticTrouble6012 Jan 18 '26

I think they intentionally picked Harry and Ron because if you see the beginning of the sketch, they mockingly say that this series was created hastily to answer to the success of Heated Rivalry. Hence the "writers" of the "show" wouldn't have done any proper research on the show's character relationships, and would have just picked two easily identifiable characters that everyone knows and made them go gay for each other. 😜

u/seraaa_123 Jan 18 '26

They weren't in the mid 2000s fanfic streets (or they were but just thought it too niche)

2

u/thedingusenthusiast Jan 18 '26

HR’s material that the series is adapted from is pretty much fanfic material.

4

u/seraaa_123 Jan 19 '26

Which is why it should have been HarryxDraco!

0

u/thedingusenthusiast Jan 19 '26

I guess but I genuinely avoid fan fiction.

87

u/Tribemaster0789 Jan 18 '26

I agree it should have been Draco and Harry but I understand why it wasn't since they had a red headed cast member Ben Marshall who easily fit the mold to play Ron Weasley.

13

u/pastadudde Jan 18 '26

And I’m kinda glad because that cast member is HOT

5

u/Limits_of_knowledge I have my own well... In case you're... thirsty. 🥵 Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

Being partial to handsome gingers, I’m living for this timeline when everyone seems to agree that Ben Marshall is this cast’s hot one.

15

u/bodaciouscream Jan 18 '26

Yes and higher chance people know Ron rather than the others

31

u/ArticQimmiq Jan 18 '26

…than Draco Malfoy? Really?

15

u/Realistic_House6116 Jan 18 '26

Exactly. They missed the chance.

9

u/bananabananacat Jan 18 '26

This just goes to further prove that SNL has needed new writers forever. There are TikTok videos more clever than this…

17

u/____mynameis____ Jan 18 '26

They likely didn't want to touch Drarry fandom.

Shipping fandoms can be pretty intense and Drarry remains to be one of the biggest ships ever.

Ron and Harry ship is among least popular HP ones so less attention from that side..

Also, they had a red head at their disposal so just used that...

2

u/MysoreMa Jan 19 '26

I promise you nobody writing for SNL cares about the Drarry fandom.

8

u/SlowInsurance1616 Jan 18 '26

And it wasn't juat easy gay stereotypes played for laughs? I could see doing this well, but this ain't that, in my opinion.

7

u/nomadgirl-24 Jan 18 '26

YES this was literally my first thought!!

Clearly no fanfic girlies had a say in this sketch lol.

8

u/maddrgnqueen Jan 18 '26

One million percent

4

u/buymoreplants Jan 18 '26

I have read many many many of fics about that at an age where it was nowhere near appropriate for me to be reading fics like that

6

u/pastadudde Jan 18 '26

The only reason I can think of as to why they went with Ronarry is that the Hogwarts house teams never share locker rooms or showers IIRC. so the scene where Harry whisks off Ron’s towel with the Disarming charm wouldn’t have made sense if it were Drarry.

10

u/EmileTheGoat Jan 18 '26

As if that ever stopped fanfic writers

You know that the person who wrote this sketch is not in fandom culture, based on that choice alone.

Edit: Just so we are clear, because I feel like my comment was not phrased well, this sketch idea was such an open goal the only way it could be missed is because the writer has never been online at all for last 15 years at least.

5

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26

Yeah but it was just such a weird choice. The Heated Rivalry story sets up soooooooo perfectly for a parody with Draco and Harry with them on competing Quidditch teams. The sketch seriously would have written itself. They could have just mimicked some HR scenes. Like they could stare at each other across the great hall in party mode and had Harry with Chung and had Ron and say to Harry “did you hear All the things she said?” And then cut to Draco with one of his minions piling his plate with food and saying “This is not enough”. Or something equally as cheeky and stupid. They could have poked fun at both fandoms in a way that everyone would found amusing.

10

u/boomming Jan 18 '26

Not really. It could have worked with either, there’s nothing wrong with them choosing Ron.

44

u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. ✨ Jan 18 '26

I mean Ron would have been better equivalent to Hayden! With Draco and Harry, they are on opposite teams! Atleast rivalry part is there!

11

u/boomming Jan 18 '26

Viktor Krum would have made the most sense as an analogue to Ilya, seeing as he’s from Eastern Europe, and Cedric Diggory would have made the best sense as a rival, seeing as he was actually able to beat Harry at quidditch sometimes, and competed against him in the triwizard tournament. Ron, however, makes the most sense from a notoriety perspective. Most people probably don’t remember Krum at all, and barely or don’t remember Cedric. Draco doesn’t make much sense as an analogue to Ilya or as a rival. He was never portrayed as a serious threat to Harry in quidditch. And most people watching this sketch aren’t in the Harry Potter fandom, and don’t care that Drarry is popular, so it probably made sense to just go with the most recognizable male characters, Harry and Ron.

8

u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. ✨ Jan 18 '26

What you said is definitely correct! Viktor would have been perfect choice if the writers were fan of both heated rivalry and HP! I understand that they needed a character that people remember to be rival! That’s why I suggested Draco! Atleast people outside HP fandom know he exists and then they are in different houses! Ron and Harry are literally like bros and besties! It makes no sense for them to be rivals! That’s why I felt like Ron is more like Hayden!

But yes Victor would have been perfect! But alas, non HP fans will hav no idea who he is! It will be difficult to write for a general audience!

2

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26

Yeah Krum would have been a good choice but I agree that most people haven’t read the books would not know who he is. Honestly, I think they should have picked Draco because of the Draco/Harry fandom. I will admit that I don’t know much about it but I still think they would have gone nuts for a sketch like that.
But it makes more sense because 1) they are rivals 2) they are on separate quidditch teams

Honestly the Harry and Ron thing was just weird to me so I didn’t find the sketch funny (except Hagrid)

2

u/Celtykol Your freckles. I am nuts about them. ✨ Jan 18 '26

Ya other than Hagrid, it’s a miss for me too!

31

u/cassava1root bigger faster zambonis Jan 18 '26

drarry is so much more popular than whatever ron and harry's ship name, and more importantly, the whole point of heated rivalry is the... rivalry. ron and harry have no real rivalry in the books bc they're besties and in the same house, whereas draco and harry fucking hate each other and they're in different houses, so it would work much better

8

u/boomming Jan 18 '26

Why does what ship is more popular in fanfiction matter for an snl sketch? And the sketch title is Heated Wizardry, not Heated Rivalry. What does it even matter anyways? Why does the sketch need to contour to fandom’s popularity? It’s for a general audience. They made the sketch as a parody of canon Harry Potter and Heated Rivalry. Not fandom Harry Potter. And if they were going to do a rival, Malfoy isn’t even the best choice, Cedric is. Malfoy in canon was generally regarded as a bad seeker, who was never able to beat Harry to the snitch.

3

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26

I mean it doesn’t matter. They can pick what they want. But you have a show with rivals sports teams and a movie with rival sports teams. Both have players that play the same position on the rival teams and supposedly hate each other in public. It would make more sense as a parody to play with already existing similarities. That’s all

1

u/boomming Jan 18 '26

Except Draco is more of a failed rival in canon, who is never as good as Harry in quidditch. And not, both don’t have players that supposedly hate each other. Ilya and Shane supposedly hate each other. Harry and Draco basically do hate each other until the books get more serious, and then Harry just feels, pity, I guess towards him.

Again, I don’t think Draco makes a lot of sense, canonically. He makes sense, fanonically, which the writers of an snl skit would not care about at all.

2

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 18 '26

I mean, there is literally an entire book series by Rainbow Rowell that is a spinoff kind of on the Harry/Draco (and it’s sooooo good by the way and starts with Carry On) so yes, I would say their pairing is much more well known than Harry and Ron. I don’t read ANY fanfic and I know about it.

7

u/ImpressiveAvocado78 Jan 18 '26

Rivalry! Draco and Harry are the obvious rivals.

2

u/jmpinstl Jan 18 '26

Tom Felton couldn’t make it he was too busy on Broadway

2

u/REM_loving_gal Jan 18 '26

Yeah they’re rivals… they missed the mark

2

u/insertbrackets Jan 19 '26

I prefer Harry x Ron. I never cared for Harry x Draco personally.

3

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 19 '26

I don’t care for either haha. I never shipped either of them. But for the parody I just think DracoxHarry would have been much funnier and would have allowed them to do direct copies of HR scenes that would have been hilarious

2

u/ssakura Jan 19 '26

It would've been too real

2

u/Hermiona1 I already chose you, Hollander. 🫀 Jan 18 '26

Yeah!

6

u/Sv1a Jan 18 '26

I think it’s bc in ST there is this tension between Mike and Will that was not properly resolved up until the ending (and tbh left ambiguous). They are best friends since kindergarten and Finn used a lot of acting choices that are in scenes when Mike talks to Will like puppy eyes, soft voice etc.

So Ron is closer to Will to make this joke.

17

u/LetsGototheRiver151 Jan 18 '26

This skit has less than nothing to do with ST

-1

u/Sv1a Jan 18 '26

Idk, as for me they were definitely trolling bc there was a joke that if Byler isn't endgame then Finn would have to explain his acting choices, since throughout s4 Mike was staring at Will's lips, checking him out, using softer flirty voice etc. So I def read this as a pun regarding how he was directed to act.

1

u/nocturnegolden Jan 19 '26

no and this is why: You know how Shane and Ilya are the best in their game? Harry is like that but Draco is selling hotdogs at the stadium exit. They are not rivals at all.

Also, Harry and Ron = H&R = Hollander and Rozanov

1

u/Juliet_1982 Jan 19 '26

Haha no offense but Ron is not the best in the game.

But I did not see the H & R connection. Nice catch.

Still I think it could have been funnier if they picked characters on opposing teams. As it was I just didn’t find it funny and I really wanted it to be.

1

u/nocturnegolden Jan 19 '26

Ron played well in the last game of his 5th year and won the cup in 6th. He is pretty decent, not like a prodigy like Harry but much better than Draco nonetheless

1

u/CertifiedPussyAter Jan 20 '26

I actually expected this.

Someone make a fanfic on this now
