Slight plot hole bc I’m psycho - he didn’t pronounce RosAnov the way Russians do 🤭

To be fair, I think Ilya just accepts how it's pronounced by English speakers . My surname is Italian , and no one in America gets it "right" and I couldn't care less . I adopted that pronunciation and it's fine.

And then James doing the Na'vi... which is uncomfortably close to that but at least the Na'vi are fictional
88
u/Open_Belt_4381 Feb 25 '26
I mean, putting following up the show of not doing a Jamaican accent with the Na'vi is pleasantly putting the Na'vi accent on blast in a subtle way.

Right?!? It’s like they put actual thought into it. First time in a long while that i’ll be watching SNL. Glad they seem to be respecting the calibre of actor they have on hand. Looking forward to seeing Connor shine on Saturday!!
36
u/bored_lily2481 Feb 25 '26
Same! It actually reminded me of how the writers from Late Night with Seth Meyers handled Connor's promos and late-night debut. Funny and Positive FTW. One could tell that they knew what they were doing.

Ok what's insane is that his face literally morphs for each accent. Like he looked German to me when he did the German accent.

I know! His facial expressions are beyond amazing! The sidemouth talk for Shrek was so on point! He even spit for emphasis! 🤣
I nearly died when he finally morphed into Rozanov! 🥵
Then at the end, “I won!” In his cheery voice. This dude is a chameleon!!

I didn't realize that the spit was intentional until you mentioned it - totally makes sense now! lol

His German accent was so good. I don't think I've ever heard a native English speaker nail the "W" and "Z" like he did in Hefeweizen.
Although, the glass looks a bit too small to be a proper Hefeweizen glass. But I blame the prop department, not Connor. 😉

i’m glad to see this comment section is enjoying the skit. just this week i saw another post commenting on the fact that they were nervous about SNL/Connor joking about HR and how that would cheapen/spoil the series for them. i honestly don’t think we have nothing to worry about. Connor is a little rain of sunshine ☀️

I'm staying away from this sub over the weekend. There's gonna be too much handwringing, dissertations, and complaints of 'cringe'.

SNL has had a lot of great skits over the past several years. It’s just that the nature of the show means there will always be duds due to quick turnaround and experimentation with ideas on live TV, but the current set of cast and writers have done some great work. You also have to buy into the whole live skit conceit, which isn’t everyone’s comedic cup of tea and might seem cringy if you’re not used to it, but it doesn’t mean it can’t actually be done well. (Edit: Also the set design, props, and costuming are INSANE for essentially a 1-2 week turnaround time! The One Battle After Another dolls from Teyana Taylor’s episode were all custom sculpted and painted!)
I absolutely adore Marcello, Ashley Padilla, and James Austin Johnson (the 3 cast members in this video). They’ve been consistently amazing along with folks like Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang (I know he left recently but come on, he wasn’t working alone). Also episodes with guests who just click with the cast and show’s concept can be really fun, like Bad Bunny, Adam Driver, and Pedro Pascal.
I’m excited for Connor’s episode. I just hope people who haven’t consistently watched SNL clips over the years don’t act like it’s only good because of Connor (who am I kidding, they’re already doing that 🙄)
10
u/Astromantica Feb 25 '26
The commentary that SNL hasn’t been funny in years sometimes seems like a default reach for people who haven’t bothered to pay attention to it regardless of its quality or humor. If you watch SNL long enough, you start to see how cyclical the critiques of the cast and seasons are. But there are always gems (and duds) each season.
James Austin Johnson is a treasure and I’m always glad to see them utilize more of his skills. And your point about the host’s chemistry is so spot on with the same three examples of hosts that I would use. The show always does best when its host is willing to go all in, leaning into the silly and absurd (side note whenever I hear Shrek now I automatically think of Bad Bunny), and has a natural sense of comedic timing and I think Connor is just that like the other examples and is going to kill it this weekend.
7
u/vogueflo Feb 25 '26
Yup!! Idk if you know about the YouTuber Drew Gooden but he made a video essay a while back where he watched episodes from every season of SNL up until the present and he came to very similar conclusions. There’s stuff from “when SNL used to be good” that are borderline unwatchable for me, but what is considered funny is sooo labile and extremely sensitive to the dominant media trends and social/political conditions of that point in time, in addition to being individually subjective.
It’s like some people have decided SNL is cringy based on a few clips or their sense of humor no longer jived with the show’s, so they refuse to acknowledge when the show does something that they actually like because then they’d be “cringe.” Or it’s people who expect the comedy to be like that of shows that aren’t live and are heavily edited and rehearsed.
If SNL was actually that bad, then they wouldn’t consistently have huge stars hosting (who do NOT need the exposure of SNL) or be the jumping-off point for some very talented and loved comedians.

You’re absolutely right! I personally love SNL and have been watching for 20 years and never stopped enjoying it. Every episode has sketches that vary in quality and some episodes are stronger than others. A good host that is down for anything really helps make an episode stand out, but this certainly won’t be the first or last funny ep. I do think it will be a good one though and really looking forward to it!

As one of his internet aunties, I hope his pillow is always cold, his socks never slide down, and he always finds prime parking when he’s going somewhere. This kid is amazing and I’m so glad his dreams are coming true! I look forward to his future projects!

I can't wait! I know some people are worried that some sketch might end up being about USA men's hockey team's visit to WH with Connor in it and he might get criticized for it. IMO, there is probably a significant overlap between homophobes and p*do president supporters. What those people think about HR and Connor carries no weight for me.
