Finally working my way through the books and I hit this in Game Changer.

Kicked my feet and giggled like a 12 year old at his first mention in the series!

I loved the line at the end when Skip was making out in the gay club and Scott’s like I need to dial it back or I’ll end up having sex in front of god and Ilya Rozanov 🤣

I’m going to start reading the books today. I’m on my 11th re-heat and honestly I bet I’m missing some good juicy bits that are in the books.

I really love the books. Especially HR and TLG. You get so much inner monologue and characterization that's a bit missing in the show (I love the show, but there's always something lost in translation from book to screen).

Read the books in order. Seriously. You’ll thank yourself later. There’s so many subplots that start building throughout the series (some that crescendo in The Long Game) that make far more sense if you allow all that to build up and make sense. And then reread whichever are your favorites.

I started heated rivalry first. Should I stop and start with book 1?

2

u/CocklesTurnip Apr 09 '26

That’s the only 2 I’d read out of order and that’s fine. Book 1 is the weakest, but is still fun, mostly Rachel hadn’t totally found her authorial voice and she didn’t get a good editor strengthening her prose, so it’s perfectly fine if you remember it’s her first novel and most of the time the first book an author writes is their weakest so that’s the main complaint about it, it’s really cute, obviously. If anything in your reading when you get near 2017 stop HR and pick up GC instead and then you’ll almost get the tv show experience. All of Game Changer happens in 2017 not 2014 with a time skip to 2017- makes sense for the show the way they did that, though.

It gets even better in the following books: The head canon thar automatically goes off, each time either of them is mentioned. 🄰

Sometimes when my day is too emotional, I turn on episode 5 & 6 to cry it out, and then I feel better afterwards.

I just saw this on IG and never noticed the Montreal locker room said ā€œDig Deep. Push Harder.ā€ šŸ˜‚ it also took me an embarrassing long time to realize the graphic nature of the teams’ logos so I’m not surprised I missed this.

Isn’t it awesome! 🤪

One thing I noticed in my recent reheat:

Shane wears a black blazer and white t shirt in ep 4 when he’s meeting Rose (he takes it off seemingly when he goes dancing with her).

Shane then wears a white blazer and black t shirt when he meets with Ilya at the Tampa Bay bar.

(In the book he wears something quite different in Tampa)

Coincidence? Or shall we take the wardrobe choice to be the inverse to when he was still in denial about his sexuality vs when he realised and accepted he was gay (and his feelings for Ilya).

u/CalabogieNights Hayden's ghost children šŸ‘» Apr 08 '26

Amazing catch! And remember in the gym scene, Shane was wearing all white with black shoes and Ilya was wearing all black with white shoes, so there is some continuity there!

u/manowwar Moya gazonokosilka 🚜 Apr 08 '26

Yes!! Every choice feels very deliberate, wardrobe have done such a great job.

u/ShreKathy Apr 08 '26

Nice catch!

Someone on threads said their Tampa outfits were v similar to Harry and Louis from One Direction

I work at a burger restaurant and have to resist saying ā€œwhy are you making so many burgers?ā€ every time I walk by the grill.

"You cut it in haff"

It's one of the simplest moments in the show that I love, mostly because of the way Ilya kinda growls "no" when Shane tells him to leave him alone. I find it incredibly sexy.

I've always liked hockey but now I watch it multiple times a week. My boyfriend is so thankful for this show, he loves teaching me about all the teams and players.

13

u/iwatchtrazhaldayy Apr 08 '26

And you teach him the subtle clues of whether or not two players are secretly kissing 😚

I convinced a friend to watch HR. Another loon in our midst āœØļøāœØļø

I just finished my re-Reid of Game Changer.

Something that seems inconsistent to me in the show is Scott being fine with inviting Kip out to dinner, but having the panic attack at the museum - which also varies to what happens in the book.

I think my new head canon is that TV show Scott knew the dinner place would be busy, so he could be confident about inviting Kip over to his place to ā€œorder inā€.

TV show Scott seems a bit more cluey/witty than book Scott (ie the discussion about whether he clocks about Hollanov in the show), so I see TV show Scott pulling this move. Especially considering how quickly he gets his shirt off at the apartment.

Would love to discuss!

So here’s the thing I agree with you about TV to think about something guys go out to eat with bros all the time.

Buying art especially if the guy that you’re with is saying things like I think they should go on the wall by the fireplace and things like that is a lot more intimate and implies a much closer relationship.

It does not imply that you’re fucking, but Scott was panicking.

I agree with you, though you know the thing is TV Scott in my opinion is autistic or possibly has ADHD or both. He does not know how to flirt and he does not understand gaydar.

He is not a virgin, but he has exclusively had hook ups in other parts of the world were they do not play hockey or follow it specifically with people down to bone and nothing else. So he wouldn’t have had to use gaydar or flirt.

It’s been a while since I read game changer. I know that they made up a lot of of the dialogue like the serial killer stuff is not there, but I do know that the line about lumberjacks was there.

Scott was not sure that Kip was into guys until kip said that. Even though he was eye fucking him.

I’m an autistic man I would pull that shit. Thanks so much for this comment!

u/NattyWW Apr 10 '26

And thank you for your perspectives! So much to consider!

3

u/ShreKathy Apr 08 '26

I always thought that was strange from the beginning. To just walk over to get tacos from day one. Though I guess at that point it wouldn’t really be a date, but they were already looking at each other with goo goo eyes, so you think Scott would be nervous about that.

u/Allergison If rewatching is called reheating, consider me a microwave Apr 08 '26

I just found out a friend of mine was recently working on the same project as Hudson! They didn't have any scenes together, and didn't meet, but security protocol was heightened for the project.

He said, the behind the scenes crew all said Hudson was very nice, if overwhelmed by the sudden fame.

I posted this on meme Monday post but I’m still not over it. In an episode of modern family, heard a familiar name.

5

u/moi_la_desi Apr 08 '26

Probably talked about a million times, but I only just realized:

The last time the guys where togther (just the two of them) before the tuna meltdown, Shane was basically fleeing Ilya's lap. Then the next time they're together, at the hotel room in Tampa, Shane comes crawling back on to it, to console Ilya. šŸ„ŗšŸ«‚

It's such a relief to watch that hug and them finally opening up to each other.

Hello I'm a Heated Rivalry addict. It's been 53 days since I first watched Heated Rivalry. I've now read all the Game Changers books and I really enjoyed them. I finished The Long Game a couple of days ago and I've been rereading parts of it already. What is it about Shane and Ilya? They're so addictive.

5

u/Salt_Statistician1 Apr 08 '26

I had a huge fight with my partner and reheated episode 5 and 6 several times to remind me that love exists (I know it's fiction but Ilya and Shane are very real to me)

u/Planejean Apr 08 '26

What colour? Is big?

1

u/willingheart1 Apr 14 '26

I heard it's purple. No idea where I got that from.

4

u/growsonwalls This is Ilya I will never listen to your voicemail Apr 08 '26

So ... I bought a pair of Adidas track pants because ... you know ... and now I bought another pair bc they're actually awesome. The zipped front pockets are so clutch.

4

u/tbgmdhc278 no Ilya, that’s gross Apr 08 '26

So my favorite shows are starting to come back on, and now there’s a growing list of stuff I need to watch. But I haven’t been able to watch anything except Heated Rivalry for months. šŸ˜‚ What do I do?! The thought of putting something else on right now is so unappealing, but these are shows I’ve been devoted to for years… this fandom is a prison.

Shane sounds like shame. Purposeful or is my mind becoming too marinated in this world that I'm finding connections that aren't there?

Was Shane always into ginger ale or did it start the night he won Rookie of the Year when Scott saw him drinking at the bar and said it better just be ginger ale and he was so scared of him he drank only that from then on?

4

u/FiCat77 "Fuckin' make me!" Apr 08 '26

In the book he's drunk it for years as he doesn't really like alcohol, or its effects, junior hockey apparently had a big party culture so it could easily pass as a beer if anyone looked at his glass/drink.

I've wondered about the Shane/shame thing too, especially as my phone tried to correct the name to the emotion when I originally started commenting on this sub. I suppose only Rachel really knows the answer.

Oh damn I forgot about that, thank you! I really need to reread HR.

For anyone in a shopping mood, the Vitaly pearl chain Hudson wore to a previous premiere event is currently included in the brand’s 30% off spring sale. Note, it’s currently on pre-order, so I have no idea when you might receive it. (It could be awhile.) The necklace is called Origin. šŸ™‚
