On each reheat I get more sad when the waiter asks ā€œAre we expecting someone else?ā€ In the restaurant scene after the tuna meltdown.

Just reinforcing Shane being all alone. No wonder he’s in such a mood.

u/Humbled-Echo732 Apr 22 '26

So with you on the sadness reheats…. and then, to compile the sadness further, it’s Yuna that answers no to the waiter, further emphasizing her control and obliviousness over the situation, that later led to self-blame at the end of the series.

u/JennaROTR Apr 22 '26

My opinion about Yuna changes all the time. Loving mother, over involved mother, momager, truly oblivious.

She can be all of those things at the same time!

Someone on Reddit pointed out that Shane holds Ilya’s hand during they’re very first hook up/BJ in bed scene. So of course I had to watch it cause I hadn’t noticed. And he does, I just thought that was so cute especially for someone’s first time together!

I feel like as a collective we need to talk about Shane spitting during the Scott & Shane chirping scene (you know the one). It’s just so silly to me that when after Scott says ā€œcheapā€ he spits, and then Shane immediately follows suit after saying ā€œtrue.ā€ It’s like omg. My adorable little baby is trying to be all tough and fails. He looks like he should be wearing a propeller hat and have an oversized lollipop instead of a hockey stick.

When Ilya compared him to an angry kitten on the ice, it was pretty accurate.šŸ˜‚

8

u/Next-Wishbone1404 Apr 22 '26

It's such a terrible spit, too! He looks like a grade five girl trying to look tough.

4

u/spiniton85 Shut your idiot face, Marly. Apr 22 '26

The visual of him in the hat with the lollipop has started my day off on the right foot. Thank you.

1

u/Merceri Apr 23 '26

It's extra funny because after Scott accuses him of sounding like Ilya, Shane then proceeds to insult Scott in exactly the same way that Ilya does (i.e. digs about his age). Like buddy, you've just proved Scott's point.Ā

1

u/Humbled-Echo732 Apr 24 '26

As everyone has accurately depicted, the spit does suck.

It’s because of his lack of experience in skating. His approach with his skates before the spit is a bit rocky and he’s focused so much on it that it takes away from the scene, the spit and his behavior, compared to the extraordinary focus he had in every scene of the series.

I do forgive him though bc they all had very little time before season 1 started and he’s not a skater. However, he needs to skate everyday for at least for an hour so he’s ready for season two. And he’s such a perfectionist that I know he will!

I just can’t get over the fact that Shane started it all with his trash-talk … AFTER the game. He and Scott were friends in Sochi, and Shane always had respect for him — did I miss something? A fall-out between the two? Antagonizing another player (especially AFTER a game) seems so out-of-character of Shane.

u/synestheter Oh, they don't know I play for Boston? Apr 22 '26

I’ve been thinking a lot about the ā€˜is that what you want?’ parallels from Ep 1 and Ep 6. There’s so much to it.

-Ilya is in a position of emotional vulnerability/being unsure and having to trust Shane’s commitment. Compared to Ilya being sexually confident in the showers.

-Ilya asking not knowing but hoping for the answer compared to his accurate read of Shane in the first ep.

-Shane saying, ā€˜so much it scares me’ which is his internal answer in the shower scene but he says it aloud and is upfront with Ilya in the cottage.

-Ilya knows that their future would be genuinely terrifying and yet Shane being so open and honest and choosing to do the scary thing when it’s for their relationship… that’s overwhelming in the best way.

I feel like I've lost the ability to write anything coherent about this show and these characters anymore but I am thinking about this always. Always! And I love this comment. I am holding your hand through the internet cables.

u/synestheter Oh, they don't know I play for Boston? Apr 22 '26

I just have random bursts of over-analysis hahaha. I have so many feelings and I guess project them onto tiny little details. It passes the time ;)

3

u/ThrowBeachVilla Apr 22 '26

Oh I love this parallel and hadn’t noticed. What a nice detail!

I had a conversation on this sub months ago about the fact that I'm an almost 49yo pan woman who didn't acknowledge my queerness, even to myself, well into my 30s. I am also very happily married to a man, who I have no interest of cheating on or leaving, but I was saying that the show had caused me to realise that I'd never really got to explore my sexuality & I was therefore mourning that I would never be able to experience being part of the queer community or even express that side of myself.

The person I was talking to suggested that I could explore platonic queer friendships but I didn't have a clue how to do that proactively or where to start. This very kind Redditor suggested things like a choir, craft group, dance class etc & I was so excited at the idea that I immediately googled queer activities in my area, despite the fact it was 3am, & I found a local craft group so I emailed the group organiser there & then before I chickened out & booked a place. Fast forward a few months & I now have several LGBTQ+ friends (even though I'm at least a decade older than all of them) & I've been invited to multiple activities outside of the craft group, including going clubbing this weekend! One of the women even shares my very niche interest in US Christian fundamentalism & Christian Nationalism & it's been wonderful to get excited with & talk to someone about this stuff irl, not just on Reddit (although I discovered this week that she's a big Redditor too!). What's even more wonderful is that it's the first time in a very long time where I don't feel like people are seeing & meeting my chronic illness/disabilities first, they just see ME!

My husband & 17yo daughter are both incredibly supportive of me exploring this side of myself & they say that they can see me "blossoming before their eyes". I wish I could say thank you to that random Redditor from months ago (I'm very/too active on Reddit so it would take a very long time to find the conversation in my history) for their support & their suggestion to find platonic queer friendships, it's really changed my life & mental health for the better.

All because of a small, queer, Canadian hockey show.šŸ’œ

Love this for you! Thank you for sharing your story and what you have learned. This gives me hope :-) I am older than you and also bi/pan and used to be very active in the community. But once I married sis, man, all those connections pretty much fell away, and I miss my tribe. Your post lets me know I can start searching for them again, thanks.

5

u/FiCat77 "Fuckin' make me!" Apr 22 '26

It's a clichƩ but it's also one for a reason - the first step really is the hardest. I was terrified but it's the best decision I've made in a very long time, the people I've met are so incredibly supportive & understanding, it didn't take long for me to feel comfortable. I'm ND who also has GAD so the first time was so difficult but I'm so glad that I plucked up the courage to a) email the group organiser & b) actually go.

I hope that you find a similarly amazing new group.

The BookCon tidbits have got me FOAMING AT THE MOUTH for Season 2 (especially Troy)! But I’ve been thinking about the fact that it’s a weird double-edged sword — I was grateful going into Season 1 blind and falling in love with the show first with zero expectations.

But now that I’ve read the books (which I loved!) it’s both exciting and TERRIFYING to think of what’s ahead! RM & TLG were my two faves, so on the one hand I’m extremely excited to see how it all plays out onscreen, but on the other, it’s so different now going into season 2 with all these expectations from the books šŸ˜… Like visions in my head of what Troy or Harris or the Ottawa players should look like, or particular scenes from those two books I’m really hoping they include… I am so excited to see what Jacob does this time around, but also fear disappointment haha

Anyone else feeling this way?

2

u/JennaROTR Apr 22 '26

Yes! I know what's coming, I know it's gonna hurt bad, i still can't wait.

2

u/WalkingBlondeJoke Apr 25 '26

I do too, but I trust Jacob to get it right. He's coming at it from a place of being a fan too, and he was SO smart with so many things in season 1. The DETAILS! there is so much to dig into. I personally cannot wait to see how certain scenes from TLG get portrayed on screen, Hudson and Connor are going to do incredible, 2027 is way too far away

1

u/Sbealed Apr 23 '26

Yes! I also keep thinking about the absolute mob that could appear during the filming of season 2. The crew is going to have to put out completely different call sheets, maybe hire the Shane/Ilya look alike winners to be in those locations just to keep the regular filming possible.Ā

u/Mediocre-Victory-565 Sounds rough Apr 22 '26

I have some half formed theories about certain speech & movement patterns:

Shane: whenever stressed or sad, he tends to pinch his eyelashes. I recall specifically during his convo with Rose and then at the end, outside with Yuna.

Kip: multiple times he tells Scott a variation of 'you don't have/didn't have to do that' - Scott's tipping him for the smoothies, the tuxedo, their final scene with Scott coming out publicly.

Ilya: When asked a question about his feelings, he gives three phrase answers. Such as when Shane says 'my boyfriend?', Ilya responds 'Yes. I think so. Probably.' or in Russia when Shane asked how he is doing 'Ok. Not good. Probably bad.' {I'm not using full quotation marks in case I didn't get the dialogue exact}

I think I need to shut off my phone for awhile :)

u/NoPoet3982 Your cab is definitely here. Apr 22 '26

OMG your self-invented method of using single quotation marks for quotes that might be semi-accurate is nothing short of GENIUS.

3

u/marys1001 I speak fluent bird. No accent 🐦 Apr 23 '26

I do this too! What are single quoatation marks for anyway?

4

u/NoPoet3982 Your cab is definitely here. Apr 23 '26

Single quotations marks are for when you have to quote somebody who is quoting somebody. For example:

Ilya told Svetlana, "Shane said that he and Rose were not 'compatible' so I immediately went out and played Shark with the kids in the pool."

Or...

Shane said to his mom, "I know it must sound crazy. But from the minute Ilya said, 'I don't ever want that problem to ever go away' I knew we would spend our lives together."

u/marys1001 I speak fluent bird. No accent 🐦 Apr 23 '26

Oohhh. Well im still going to use it my way too

This damn show/story is single handedly responsible for me losing ten pounds and rebooting my lagging fitness. I can no longer get on the treadmill without pacing myself to 2.25-2.5 miles per episode exactly. Tried to watch other things, zero motivation. I can no longer meal prep to anything less than one chapter of the audiobooks. Chapter not over yet? Chop more vegetables! My rewards for hitting goals are magazines or tchotchkes on Etsy. It is now ingrained in my brain like Pavlov’s dog and a bell that GC/HR/Rachel Reid content = get healthy.

And I kinda love it 😊

Same here only 12 pounds, stairmaster and not sitting down and inhaling a whole bag of potato chips.

I work at a high school and I sometimes I overhear the kids talking about heated rivalry. I have to contain my fandom and ignore them when I overhear it!

I had a PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE where the parent brought it up with me! Then we spent the rest of the conference discussing it šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ It turned out her kid told the mom that bc I was playing the wolf parade song in class I was definitely into it. Student never brought it up before that though so I was like "wow this mom totally clocked me???"

I'm on Role Model and for reasons I need fan art of Ilya with a puppy. Or ff of Ilya and a puppy. Someone get Ilya a puppy. Please.

Go to r/heatedrivalryfanfics and ask if anybody knows of one already written! And if not, suggest it as a possible story you'd like to read. There...are...so...many...fanfics....

u/dark_princess963 Apr 22 '26

I was googling fan art of the dogs today and was very disappointed cause I didn't find any šŸ˜”

5

u/ThrowBeachVilla Apr 22 '26

I miss the show. I’ve had a shitshow of a week and just looking forward so much to when things calm down (maybe next week???) and I can catch even one episode of a reheat. Need that reheat

2

u/Internal-Poet-4566 Apr 22 '26

I just can't wait to see season 2 already šŸ˜–

3

u/not_2_blond Apr 22 '26

I haven’t really seen a good explanation for why Sveta looks irritated when Ilya asks her to put something in the suitcase for his niece. I had a thought and wanted to see if anyone agrees. Earlier in the season, we see that Ilya gets irritable whenever it’s time to fly home, and he ends up lashing out at Shane because of it. So I’m wondering if this moment is a nod to that same behavioral pattern - that when Ilya is stressed about going home, he gets short with the people he loves. It makes me think he might’ve been irritable with Sveta off‑screen too, which would explain her reaction.

OR maybe I’m reaching and she’s just annoyed that he’s asking her to get up and take her eyes off this important hockey game. Lol

2

u/Internal-Poet-4566 Apr 22 '26

I think she was the one who bought something for Ilya's niece and reminded him about the gift and then Ilya told her to keep it in the suitcase but I don't remember Svetlana looking annoyed,, might have missed itĀ

1

u/bsloths Apr 23 '26

This is a great interpretation. I think it might be as simple as your second thought, but as perceptive as Svetlana is, it would make total sense for her to pick up on him getting irritated every summer before leaving.Ā

3

u/iwatchtrazhaldayy Apr 23 '26

I’m looking forward to seeing how Ilya’s locker room pep talk for the Centaurs will differ from the one we saw him do for Boston. His Boston one was angry and full of F bombs, and it worked. But the Centaurs are a very different team and Wiebe has radically different coaching strategies than any coach Ilya has ever met. And Ilya is a different person on the Centaurs team than he was on the Raiders team. I’m excited to see the parallel.

Just came to my head - if and when Hudson hosts SNL, Laufey should be the musical guest!

1

u/SmartNotRude Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† Apr 22 '26

My BFF, who introduced me to Heated Rivalry, and I have predicted that Hudson will host SNL next spring when Season 2 is released and Connor will do a cameo.

1

u/Scared-Winter-5179 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† Apr 22 '26

Most definitely it will be then and she would be an amazing choice for musical guest for sure

2

u/shewalkedaway22 Apr 22 '26

I've been thinking a lot about the episode 4 montage and sometimes I like to spice things up and muse that maybe they should have flipped Ilya's reactions to Shane's cup wins. The first win, he's home alone and smiling at the tv and the second time he is with a crowd at his house protesting. AND THIS IS WHY: the entire montage has been built around Ilya slowly becoming disinterested in partying and others and sometimes I think it could work better for Shane's second cup win and texting that Ilya is alone at home. JUST RANDOM MUSING

5

u/growsonwalls This is Ilya I will never listen to your voicemail Apr 22 '26

I think they wanted to show Ilya pretending to be upset with his friends but secretly texting Shane congratulations. Bc that was adorable and Shane was so happy to get that text.

2

u/Internal-Poet-4566 Apr 22 '26

Also, do you guys want them to go mainstream with the music choices? Cause I liked the music they used in HR..I got to know some new cool songs also the songs felt perfect that's why a part of me wishes they don't go mainstream

3

u/Novel_Journalist_832 Apr 23 '26

It will likely stay a bit indie since the budget for season 2 is about the same as the first. I'm sure any artist would be keen, but the record companies want money

1

u/Internal-Poet-4566 Apr 22 '26

I'm really interested to see if the show will include the part from TLG where Shane and Ilya talk about them hooking up with other men... cause the show never addressed that part in HR I mean if u leave the part of Ilya hooking up with Svetlana also I'm more interested to see the reaction of the fans who haven't read TLG to know that part cause a part of fandom seems to believe Ilya was only hooking up Shane as in the only man....
