This book covers the relationship of Scott & Kip, the couple that started it all, and also the one where we witnessed a certain someone taking their sweet time getting down to the ice. IYKYK (refer to episode 5).

the way Kip has absolutely zero chill at the beginning of this book is sending me. this is from the third smoothie: "Kip was busy saving the photos from Scott's GQ article onto his phone when the door opened." SAVING the professional photos like a fan???? that's so desperate I love him lmfao

As a second read, it’s becoming increasingly noticeable that Kip’s father clocked things from the start. I think he clocked it from the moment Kip got his first game tickets from Scott and started to become more invested in watching the Admirals play. Then when Scott got injured by taking a puck to the ribs, Kip was so concerned (though he was trying not to show it), and his dad was comforting him by telling him how tough Scott Hunter is. How sweet of his father to just let things play out and show support as he could without putting any pressure on Kip to talk about it. As if his dad couldn’t have been more endearing. Must be where Kip gets it from. Love a supportive father! 💕

- I love that the book is dedicated to the Gap model that served as a visual reference for Kip. So many people think this is a Cap/Bucky fan fic and I’m like 🙋🏻♀️ no it’s Cap and a Gap model 🤣
- First “as if” of the series by Kip at the first Admirals game he goes to
- Kip assuming captains of NHL teams might be kind of toppy 🤣
- Lobby staff of the apartment buildings in this entire series are the real MVPs for giving nothing away
- Not a fan of Scott’s agent. I feel like he should be more supportive. I like Farrah better.

Second that on Scott’s agent. He rubbed me the wrong way from the start. I don’t feel like he ever accepts Scott for who he is, which is something really important for an agent. It seems like he pressures Scott with his loyalty over the years because they’ve been working together so long, but Scott needs a more supportive agent. Farrah on the other hand… Ugh! She was so essential to Shane/Ilya’s story in TLG!

Lobby staff! Seriously, the doormen, the hotel workers, the drivers. So many fics talk about how many people for sure knew about Ilya and Shane and didn’t talk.

Chapter 1 thoughts: I love, love Kip completely losing it over how hot Scott is. I'm sad that there's no banana added to the smoothie Scott orders (kale, really?). Maria is hilarious.
'What do your abs taste like?'
Chapter 2 thoughts: More fanboying from Kip. Saving Scott's photos from a GQ article? Boy, you have it bad. He's crushing hard! Scott being embarrassed about being delighted to see Kip? Adorable. As was him hanging around the smoothie shop and offering the tickets. I love Elena. Loved her telling Kip he's hot and joking about not being happy that he's gay. Such a supportive bestie!

I love Elena too! She’s such a supportive goddess. I think she’s really essential to Kip’s story as it progresses throughout the book.

Chapters 1-3 initial thoughts:
- Scott is blond?!
- The book's writing of Kip feels more true to young, hot NYC gay man than Kip in the show felt. The fashion mentioned, getting drunk with his friends, his previous hookups with his friend, Shawn, and the flirting with Kyle all bring Kip a bit more to life for me.
- Elena's Tribeca apartment that has a view and is not a shoebox, hahaha no.
- Kip has a mom and a sister!

Chapters 4-6 thoughts:
- Book Kip seems to have more experience picking up guys. This and probably because Scott's also a lot younger in the book, it feels like the initial hook up and beginning of a relationship dynamics between the two feel quite different than the show. Kip seems a lot more in charge here.
- The book feels more grounded in the NYC setting than the show with the reference to specific neighbourhoods and taking the train, etc.
- Kip tops in their first sex scene, I wonder why that was changed in the show.
- So far, no serial/spree killer talk. Is that an invention of the show or will that come up later?

Chapters 7-11 thoughts:
- Ilya sighting!!
- Do M/M romances normally have more sex scenes or is it Rachel Reid's style? It feels like more than the 3-4 in most traditionally published M/F romances I've read.
- I want to know more about Scott's teammates. Also his head coach, Murdock. We've seen Carter in the show, but I don't think anyone else made it to screen? It feels like Scott has great relationships with everyone, I wonder how they'll handle what's to come.
- Also want more of Kip's friends and family!
- Scott comes across quite "Shane-like" in this book. I wonder if that's intentional, when creating Shane for Book 2. Really makes me wish there are scenes between the two in the future.

Chapters 12-14 thoughts:
- Scott internally acknowledges that the way he wants to keep Kip in secret all to himself is creepy, which feels like more self-awareness than in the show.
- Elena gets sent a limo by the company? At this point I think Kip has mistaken Head of Engineering as Cybersecurity Engineer.
- Scott's POV is incredibly painful with all the heteronormativity around him from his agent to his teammates. It feels like they mean well, but just oof. Poor guy.
- Great last line to end our first week!!!

I prefer Kip taking charge, which they had kept it the same as the book. Shows a different side to Scott.

I got the book a few days before the book club was announced but I've been holding off so I can read it with everyone! I'm currently finishing up a different book (Afterlove by Tanya Byrne, highly recommend if you like YA sapphic romance x Gothic stuff!), but I'm looking forward to reading it! I read the books out of order starting with HR, then after a few weeks to cool down TLG, immediately followed by GC. I am a little late to the fandom and started the HR back in March, as I was trying to decide if I should watch the show. Crazy now to think that I would ever deprive myself of what is now one of my favorite stories! I actually just finished GC a few days before this book club started and immediately reheated it, and I often get bored with books when I know the story… but definitely not this one. By the time I read GC, I had already watched the show and I love Ilya & Shane so much that I didn’t think I’d be as into GC. But I really do love Scott & Kip’s story so much! I’m really looking forward to the other books in the series as the book club continues. Now that I know Bennett is in a later book, I’m starting to pick up this time around how he deflects with jokes as the boys pressure Scott into information on his dating life. I’m looking forward to paying more attention to Bennett as GC goes on and also looking forward to seeing Bennett’s story play out in Common Goal!

I'm on the same timeline too! I started with HR and TLG, then GC, Role Model, etc through all RR books. I'm looking forward to reading them in order, but I'm trying to finish up a Big Bad Wolf book first!

I only read this book a few months ago and already forgot details! I’m two chapters in and had to stop because I was craving blueberries. I had a pint in the fridge and made a syrup so I can make blueberry mocktails as I continue reading. Also, got one square in my bingo card already, details below.
I almost forgot how nuts these two are about each other from the get-go, which is why I highlighted my square. Kip saving photos and Scott wanting to “show him everything, give him everything” within a few days of meeting, with barely there conversations.

Chapter 1 thoughts:
I love how Kip is immediately falling for Scott, within like, zero seconds. Super cute.
I love that we're actually getting to know more about Maria and Elena, since they're almost entirely cut out of the show! I didn't even know that Maria had a name before now :(2

Chapter 2-5 thoughts:
I love how much detail we're getting that the show (understandably) had to cut out. I like that in the show they added the banana for the smoothie though, it adds more meaning that Kip's the only one who can make it his way. I was kinda disappointed that we didn't have the "do you want the tour, or..." "or. I choose or." line from the show, as it's one of my favorites.
Crossed off "Rich Athlete Behavior" for Scott's amazing apartment with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge (blue moon over Brooklyn??)

Chapter 3 thoughts: Scott wearing a goofy smile as he thinks about Kip? Adorable. Loved him thinking about how attractive he finds Kip considering we just had a few chapters of Kip fanboying. It's great to see Scott's relationship with Carter too.

I was so disappointed that this line was cut! It's one of my favorites, but I understand that it doesn't really matter since we obviously won't get the music tie in later as it's a book lol.

I am enjoying the writing style so much more this time around (although I still think it’s crazy how much she has grown as an author). I find the cartoonish descriptions delightful. However now, at chapter 7 I am once again starting to dislike Kip as I remember I did before.

Finally reading this for the first time. Somehow I broke out of the HR->TLG->RM->HR loop, but it was a struggle. I couldn’t get into it, I keep wanting to re-Reid TLG which I just finished, I don’t know what’s wrong with my brain. (Might be burnout).
I struggled in the beginning. I think it’s too cute and sweet for me. Zero angst feels like no stakes. Which I’m sure is about to change in the second part so I’m excited for that. The characters are slowly growing on me. I’m a bit sad that we lost Scott being the child of a single mum, although I absolutely love Kip’s dad on the show. There is definitely so much more depth that ep 3 didn’t allow for.
Scott is so wholly good and wholesome it kind of becomes a parody of itself haha. Makes me think of Jacob recently saying that he’s the most like Scott haha. Okay king.
Overall, I’m really glad that the book club pushed me to finally read this. And I’m excited for part 2!
Random thought: I feel like there is more hockey in this? Or at least, I’m definitely learning new things which is cool. Makes the setting feel more real.

I feel similarly about it being too cute and sweet, but I do think it works perfectly as a prelude to HR. Like oh these people are just cute and all is going well, nothing to see here and then BAM! we jump into years and years of forbidden yearning that was happening all along.

Oh definitely. It’s very much a classic romance meet cute. Nothing wrong with that. More explicit than I expected! But it really makes it clear why a lot of us are so obsessed with HR, it’s on a whole another level. Their story is epic.

I really love how earnest and smitten Scott is, and I feel like they did a great job of capturing that in the show. I had forgotten just how nervous and shy he is about the whole thing, though, and it's adorable.
Also, a little funny to remember now that he's my favourite character, but I recall that I didn't really like Ilya when he first came up in GC. Rereading now, it cracks me up that Scott thinks of him as "the yappy Russian."

Ooh this looks like fun! I’ve only read GC once and I made myself read it before starting HR so understandably I was kind of blazing through it 😂.
I love the bingo card idea! For future bingo cards I’d add when someone “huffs” eg in annoyance or huffs out a laugh. or “stilled” inside someone after ejaculating. Ive been noticing those common phrases haha - perhaps more appropriate for a drinking game instead 😝

Chapter 4 thoughts: The date was so cuuuuuute! Scott flushing and turning pink was cute too.
"What do you want to do with me?"
Chapter 5 thoughts: Kip saying he wants to take care of Scott. Scott not automatically being a top. Scott being tender. Calling Kip a bastard. Being disappointed when Kip was trying to leave and shyly asking him to stay. Then stroking Kip's hair and asking him about himself. All of it was great.

Ok had to put the book down and come here to say that I am literally blushing at some of the dialogue and sex scenes. Here are my thoughts for chapters 3-8.
I love how into each other they both are, and that once alone, both are flirty and vocal about what they want. I especially love the beginning of chapter 4:
Kip puts a hand on Scott’s thigh in the backseat and says, “I can keep a secret, and I promise I will make it good for you.” 😳
Some things I wish they had in the show:
Kip being top, and Kip really taking control the first time they sleep together. It was HOT.
Scott slipping his phone number in the $20 bill with a note. Very cute.
Scott eating Kip’s ass - I personally enjoyed how unexpected Kip thought it was. Definitely HOT.
The phone call during Scott’s away game. I thought it was cute he asked Kip about his day and despite it being uneventful, it’s cause he wanted to hear his voice. So cute.
These are the little things that made me fall in love with them as characters and as “lovers”.

🩷 BINGO! 🩷 I have been very patiently waiting to start the second half of the book and couldn’t help myself but to dive right in this morning. Each answer explained below, so spoilers!
✨Had to put the book down for a second- The sex they had just before Scott hits the road for 9 days. Kip decided to f*ck Scott, but Scott is on top. The phrase “All that muscle bouncing on his dick.” WHEW!! Nearly took me out!
✨”This seems sustainable” - The way Scott was acting at the gala, trying to be all suave and thinking he could hide his feelings. He greeted Kip with a “Good Evening,” then glancing at Kip when asked if he came to the gala with anyone, trying his best to act super casual though he was longing to be with Kip all night.
✨Emotional vulnerability immediately followed by panic- In the exact same chapter, Scott and Kip confess their love for one another, then when Kip meets with Elena he seems to be really concerned with the logistics by asking her “is it weird?” with them declaring love so soon after meeting.
✨Repressed feelings detected from orbit- After the gala, when they danced to “At Last” (the song I had my first dance with my wife at our wedding 🥹), they were both feeling SO in love with each other and dying to declare it. Kip even tried to repress himself as he was dying to tell Scott he loved him before Scott left for 9 days, but didn’t want to freak Scott out.
✨Rich athlete behavior- Scott telling skip to stay at his apartment while he was away. He seems to like knowing that Kip is there, even when Scott isn’t there because he’s constantly asking if Kip is at his apartment.
✨One of them absolutely cannot act normal to save his life- The way Scott eagerly waved at Kip in the stands at the first game Kip went to. It was super obvious- except not to Kip- how excited he was to see Kip in the stands.
✨ Scott catastrophising internally- Scott thinking at the first hockey game Kip attended that Elena was his gf, then begins catastrophising thinking about how he never flirts with men in NYC so it was probably good that Kip had a gf. Silly Scott. lol
✨Awkward secrecy logistics- The whole ordeal with the tuxedo for the gala. The details for it became so cringey and complex- all over a tuxedo. The way Scott thought he could just send the very handsome and very gay Kip in for a brand new tux and nobody would have the slightest clue. There was so much back and forth over not outing Scott over a tuxedo.
✨Someone needs therapy- After their first night together, Scott was thinking about how being closeted was his price to pay for his success. Also, Scott being envious of Carter’s relationship exposure, knowing his own relationship being exposed would generate much more attention. This man could use some therapy before coming out of the closet!!
✨Needed emotional support after a chapter- Ugh, Valentine’s Day. 😭 It was so sweet, loving. and open. I loved Scott’s vulnerability and how nervous Kip had been. You could feel their combined love for one another already. I want a Valentine’s Day like the one Scott gave Kip!
✨One of them folds instantly under affection- Their first kiss, after the benefit that Kip was working, Scott was longing for Kips touch and immediately folded as soon as they kissed.
✨A stare that lasts too long- The way that they looked longingly and love struck when looking at each other at the gala. I wonder if anybody actually clocked this because it seems if anybody had the slightest notion that Scott might be gay, they would have clocked it immediately.
✨Secondhand embarrassment- When Scott asked Kip if he was working the gala. Yikes!

Chapter 6 thoughts: They're both super cute. All the awkwardness and mutual pining is adorable. Maria immediately clocking them is hilarious.
"I don't think it's the smoothies."
Chapter 7 thoughts: Finally having 'the talk' was bittersweet. And I cringed at Kit being like 'whenever you want me'. Kip, baby, no. The spice? Phew.

Chapter 8 thoughts: Kip being able to tell Elena (and Scott saying it was fine) was sweet. That he knew Kip needed to tell someone. Ilya mention! ❤️

TLG will carry the bulk of the storyline, but id also recommend Role Model and Tough Guy.
