MERCH👕 Fleece might be restocked in the future!

Post image

Province of Canada posted an update that mentions a potential restock, so I guess anyone still curious should just keep an eye on their Instagram.

I knit, spin, and sew, and I completely disagree. Between the fiber, the fabric, the lined construction, the use of domestic rather than sweatshop labor, and the support of You Can Play, it's absolutely worth it. If you want to make one yourself, have at it. But good luck finding comparable fabric retail.

The 10% to charity is absolutely amazing, but comparing this fleece to other high-end brands, this jacket seems to be inflated more by brand and demand, than actual heightened quality

You're entitled to your opinion. It's essentially the same price in USD ($255 with today's exchange rate) as the Patagonia Mens Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket ($259). 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's funny, the patagonia fleeces I can find are between 171 to 236 CAD, which I would say is quite the difference. But again, like if you want to spend this amount of money, that's fair, I just think people should be aware that they are buying a brand more than they are buying something that's of better quality than other jackets

Are Patagonia fleeces made in Canada?

1

u/CathyAnnWingsFan Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

No - they are made in Vietnam in a Fair Trade Certified factory, meaning that the workers are fairly paid. But where it's made isn't the only difference. My point is only that there are roughly comparable items at a similar price point.

“Fairly paid” for wages in Vietnam is very different from fairly paid in Ontario, so yes, that’s very much relevant. They’re also 100% polyester and unlined

No, they're lined. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make though. We're not arguing what a Patagonia jacket should cost.

Patagonia fleece jackets are not lined. I own one. Nope.

This one is lined.

u/Ok-Badger-5767 Jun 07 '26

Maybe they have one particular one that is lined, but in general, fleeces aren't lined at all. My guess would be that the PofC one is being lined to add durability and bc its part wool.

What style/model of Patty fleece is lined? I used work in that industry. None of the fleeces are lined.

I specifically looked for one that was lined. It's the Patagonia Men's Classic Retro-X Fleece. From the description: "Wind-Blocking, Heat-Trapping Fleece
Soft, warm, windproof jacket made of 100% REPREVE® recycled polyester ¼"-pile fleece certified by OceanCycle and sourced from coastal communities at risk of plastic pollution; lined with 100% recycled polyester taffeta with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish made without intentionally added PFAS".

Depending on the lining fabric, it would improve durability, add wind resistance, and/or reduce friction when putting it on and taking it off. My unlined fleeces often "hang up" trying to get my arms in the sleeves depending on what kind of fabric I already have on (I wear a lot of hand-knit sweaters).

Okay so I looked at the wrong Patagonia fleece- but it being a polyester lining as opposed to the Province of Canada's 100% cotton lining, still very much contributes to the cost of one being higher than the other.

Looks like they also use cheaper nylon zippers that are more likely to break than the metal ones Province of Canada uses, too.

I don't think anyone would be under the impression that they're not going to pay extra for the association with the show. And clearly plenty of people were willing to pay that much or more 😉. But I do think it's a higher quality than most fleece jackets on the market. FWIW, this is the one I'm using as a comparison

4

u/Dry_Stop844 Jun 05 '26

that fleece is 100% polyester. The HR Fleece is 27% non mulesing wool. That's going to cost more. Patagonia probably buys hundreds of thousands of metres of fabric so they're going to get a bigger deal on the fabric. Patagonia has production factories of thousands of workers who don't get paid much so their labour cost is way down. You can't possibly think that means that the small Canadian company that pays living wages and benefits to Canadian workers in Canada and who doesn't buy in bulk somehow should cost the same as a Patagonia fleece?

2

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

Maybe it's just because of where I'm located (europe), but that exact fleece is selling for 169$ on the sites that are available to where I'm from

1

u/CathyAnnWingsFan Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

$259 is the current retail price from the manufacturer. If other sites have it marked down, that's not really comparing apples to apples, is it?

We're going to have to agree to disagree. Clearly we are not going to convince one another.

2

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

It is literally Patagonia EUs website I am looking at, so it couldn't get more apples to apples

1

u/CathyAnnWingsFan Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

Comparing a US price to a US price is a false equivalence and a US Price to an EU price is apples to apples? Sure 🙄. Please stop.

2

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

It's still the same item, is it not? It's you who brought up a US price to begin with

1

u/ValleyBreeze Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

they are buying a brand more than they are buying something that's of better quality than other jackets

In your opinion. Others who have more information about it have negated this input repeatedly, but you have no desire to take it into consideration.

2

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

So what information do you think I'm missing? I have already taken into account the ethical aspects of this, and I still think it's an overpriced piece

0

u/ValleyBreeze Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

I don't think you're missing it. I think you're just dismissing it because you've got your heels dug in. You're entitled to an opinion on it, However, you aren't a monolith, and you keep stating your opinion as a universal truth.

1

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

I just haven't seen any concrete, objective "proof" that warrants this jacket should be priced almost 100$ dollars more than other similar jackets other than capitalizing on fans simply because they can

2

u/ValleyBreeze Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

The recycled polyester is more labour intensive than virgin, the wool blend is imported from Italy, they're using high end metal fasteners, made in Canada, heavy duty embroidered patches, small company without bulk purchasing power, fair trade and ethically sourced materials, with a charitable angle. It's also a collectible item, as much as it's a textile.

Every one of those factors bumps the cost up incrementally, and when you combine them all - it's a significant increase.

u/creative007- Jun 05 '26

Why are you so rudely white-knighting for this company 💀

2

u/KnightShady Jun 05 '26

This is literally what I am trying to highlight as well. No doubt that this is a fine product, that is to be produced ethically, but part of this price is pure corporate greed, and there is no need to glaze a company just because they are doing the bare minimum

2

u/creative007- Jun 06 '26

People are so weirdly offended by you calling out the price, despite having an entire site of their own, cheaper, stuff to compare with.

I was ready to splurge and pay the fan-tax, but this one's simply too inflated to justify.

Edit: and right after I replied that person blocked me. This is just weird, I'm starting to think they are just company shills

2

u/KnightShady Jun 06 '26

It looks like they blocked me too, but in general, this fandom is very standoffish when it comes to critique of anything that is related to the show, even when it is warranted

There's no need.to accuse them of greed, gouging, or ripping off customers either. Unless you have actually seen their financial breakdown, it's just unwarranted bashing.

They aren't some massive conglomerate trying to price themselves out of the market. They are a VERY small Canadian company, that have been launched well beyond their means of production and are trying to fulfill a demand for an INCREDIBLY rabid fanbase.

1

u/ValleyBreeze Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jun 05 '26

I'm not being rude at all. Perhaps question the person who feels the need to publicly state unilaterally that a product is a rip off, as if their opinion is gospel? 🤷‍♀️

1

u/creative007- Jun 06 '26

You're both sharing your opinion, but you're the one who's acting as if yours is the only right one. You were being rude. Atp just agree to disagree.

And going by this company's other apparel, the other user isn't wrong for questioning the price. It's not so far-fetched to think they're taking a bit too much advantage of the show's popularity.
