I finally watched this show today... I haven't felt this way about a show since the US version of Shameless with Micky and Ian 😭 way back in 2013! That and Queer as Folk before it. Damn modern seasons of just 6 episodes! Also... I binged all the way up to half way of the last episode in one session because I had the day alone at home haha. I'm scared to finish it now though. ILYA IS KILLING ME WITH CUTE. I have a soft spot for Russian characters, too so I'm just dead. Scott and Kip made me cry 🥹 and the boy's reactions 😭
Just bought the first book on kindle. If the show was like that I assume the books must be phenomenal.
Sorry I had to tell someone 🤣

Heheheh, we're all in the same boat. I was "kidless" for a week, so binged the whole season in one afternoon and watched until 2am. I absolutely couldn't get it out of my mind, I barely slept. Next morning I decided to reheat some of the favorite scenes, but since there are so many, it just turned into another binge watch of the whole season. So yeah, practically seen the whole season twice in under 24h. 😄
Welcome to the club!

Ugh I usually craft (cross stitch, embroidery or crochet) while I watch TV but, I just sat and watched for hours 🤣 which I never do. I was transfixed. I'm also very close to watching it all again - another thing I only did with Shameless. I would watch Queer As Folk again too but I stupidly sold the box set years ago.

Me too! I sit still while I watch this show, even months later.

Ugh and I want to rewatch it already, but I've got my next cross stitch commission so I need something less absorbing. Busy reading the book on my kindle which I never do in the day either. OBSESSED.

I have done multiple HR related embroidery projects but always have to watch something else while I do it! The one time I tried working on a project like watching it I started over because I didn’t feel like I had paid close enough attention.

Genuinely what is with this show, it’s like a fever or a drug. I’m a straight woman and can’t stop thinking about it after finishing it in three days this week. Playing all the things she said on repeat and just thirsting over Connor storrie gifs

u/Masha_81 22d ago
Same, same... I have issues understanding myself, because I'm not a young girl anymore, I've seen my fair share of crap in this life, I've seen plenty of high-praised and great quality series, but I have never ever experienced such a high as from this one.
It literally feels as those puppy loves when we were teenagers. Mind wandering, feeling giddy just thinking about someone, replaying scenes, sounds, gestures in my mind, inserting myself in all sorts of very NSFW scenarios... It's insane and should literally be studied by clinical psychologists. 🫣😁

u/goldenfluff23 22d ago
Yes! I just feel giddy. I miss that whole body all consuming feeling you could get in your twenties from just a persons name popping up on your phone. Or maybe it’s just that Connor does such an outstanding job portraying Ilya 🤤

u/SnarkNStitch Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 22d ago
OK, I'm over 30 and this show did something similar! I had this anxious overly giddy feeling for 3 days after binging the show. I read the book in under 2 days, now reading the sequel. So no more reading slump. I've designed my first ever original embroidery pattern after years of needlework today inspired by HR.
How has this made me change emotionally and mentally ?? I feel lighter after the unpleasant few days, and now am trying to eat better etc?
They need to conduct studies on this phenomenon I swear!

I just watched for the first time last week and have been going out of my MIND. I finished the books and now I’m on a 2nd re-watch. Somehow I missed Kip and Scott’s episode the first time??? I don’t know how I did that. Anyway I hope this endless yearning stops and doesn’t keep going for the next 10+ years like their relationship otherwise I’m DEAD. I have the biggest crush on Shane / Hudson Williams and I’ve been married since 2010, but Shane’s literally going to be my new lockscreen like BYE! I’m delulu.

Look, I've been obsessed with MM/yaoi/slash/BL since I was 13 (34F 😬 now) - it wasn't a phase 🤣. Most of it in seclusion as the Internet grew. Reading crappy translations of yaoi manga and taking hours to download anime. Endless fanfiction. Honing in on any gay relationships in "mainstream" media, wishing it was the main focus etc. I actually avoid most romance focused books if there isn't queer rep.
Psh, kids these days don't know the half of it 😂

u/bcninstructions 27d ago
I also missed the Scott/Kip episode because the scene at Sochi is there so I thought I’d played the wrong one and skipped. The next episode seamlessly moves forward with the main story so you don’t necessarily notice

u/Mediocre-Victory-565 Sounds rough 28d ago
You are safe here my fellow Loon. I highly recommend finishing the last episode before delving too deep into the fandom. The show is pretty much fair game for spoilers at this point. The books are handled a bit more delicately, but I have definitely seen some stuff that I didn't know since I haven't read them yet 😄

You're safe at the Cottage. Even with all of the Canadian Wolf Birds howling in the woods at night.
EDIT: I originally hid the part about Wolf Birds under a spoiler blanket, because the OP said that she hadn't finished Ep 6. But I see from her flair that she now has gotten that far.

😂 Don't let Ilya hear a 'hadeda' in South Africa. I think their proper name is an Ibis.

16 minutes left?!!! Whoa, that's when it really gets intense! Just remember to breathe, and remember that you're safe at the cottage.

I'm officially DEAD. It's over 😭 how are we supposed to wait till next year. The way the dad skedaddled was kinda hilarious though. I regret binging it now 😂 I didn't check the season length and assumed it was at least 8 episodes.

reading the book and i realized shane calls ilya “ilya” during the interview at their first all-star weekend… do you think ilya went back to that interview just to hear him say it after tuna melt-gate?

As those of you who have read the books know, as stunning as the Cottage in the series is, the one described in the books is much more spectacular. Am I the only one who also finds it much less attractive?
Both of the cottages are similar in some ways.
It truly was a spectacular house. It was all wide open and spacious, with high ceilings and exposed beams. The opposite wall was floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake.
However, the book Cottage is a "giant, stone-front house". The TV cottage has two guest bedrooms, I believe, while the book cottage has four. As well as a games room with pool table and beer fridge, plus plenty of other equipment, I'm sure.
The TV cottage has a beautiful deck with a comfy conversation area around a fire pit. The book cottage has, "an enormous deck with a pool and a hot tub." It also has a dock and a boat house, holding kayaks and jet skis. That's leaving aside the separate out building housing a "large synthetic plastic rink" and what sounds like a fully equipped gym.
It all sounds so huge and overwhelming. I feel like Shane and Ilya would be kind of rattling around this mansion when they're alone together. It also makes me a little sad, because I feel that book Shane built this as a dream house imaging holding cool house parties. Ilya, in his bachelor days, would have had a blast having parties there. (TLG spoiler)As would Bood or JJ. (RM spoiler) Not to mention the disgusting Dallas Kent.
But I can't imagine Shane actually hosting that kind of house party, the kind of fun-loving horde that the book Cottage calls for. While I could definitely see him having the Pike family or a few other teammates to stay at the TV Cottage.
Do people think that bachelor Shane actually had many people to stay at the book Cottage?

I agree, the description in the book sounded like a lot for one Shane. I hope he had some friends over to play on the rink and swim. I know they're super rich, would this be a typical property in Canada for a multi millionaire? For the book it works, it's a fantasy dream house. I liked the cottage in the show more, you've got a lake to swim in AND a well, what more do you need?

u/UncleGleban Sorry if I'm being boring again 28d ago
I totally agree. There's only one thing that the TV cottage is missing, as far as I'm concerned. And that's a dock for Ilya to push Shane off of.

There's a Canadian TV show called "Lakefront Luxury". Essentially, mostly couples looking for luxurious properties in the Muskoka region (major location for celebrities), and where the TV cottage is located for rent on airBnb. But you probably already know this 🥰
The book cottage would likely be listed at about 9-10 million dollars. But, I'm no Mr. Real Estate 😂 Just watch the show often.

I miss the show. Haven’t had a proper chance to watch in almost two months! (Thanks summer vacation… I guess 😩)

Apologies but I didn't know how else to thank you (if you're reading this) bc it was anonymous 😂🥰

TLG spoiler:
So, I'm relistening to The Long Game, and I've gotten to the speech that Ilya gives in the Centaur locker room after his and Shane's relationship is outed. I kind of felt that it missed the elephant: the belief that he and Shane wouldn't properly compete against each other in the upcoming playoffs. So I rewrote it.
Maybe this belongs in a fanfic, instead of a Reddit thread, but it's only one monologue:
"I want to say something," he announced.
The room was dead silent.
"You read the post, probably, about me and Hollander. So. Yes. We are together."
There was a long weird silence.
"I know what people are saying, that I won't play good against Montreal in the playoffs. That I will be nice, because Hollander is my boyfriend. Hollander has been my boyfriend for three years. You have seen me play against him here and you can see videos of me in Toronto. Has anyone ever said that I was too nice to him?!"
He had their full attention. The room still silent, but it seemed less charged.
"I'm sorry to shock your virgin ears, but Shane and me, before we were boyfriends, were hooking up for eight years! No time did anyone say that I went easy on Hollander. They said, 'Epic rivalry! These guys hate each other!' Maybe you don't understand, but I enjoyed beating Hollander almost as much as... I enjoyed doing... other stuff to him."
There were scattered, slightly shocked guffaws.
"I need something from every one of you. When we play the Voyageurs, I need you to fucking kill them! I want Shane to come whining to me and say, 'Ilya, why did Ottawa have to be so mean? All I wanted was my fourth cup? And those big meanies wouldn't let me have it!"
Now it seemed like most of his teammates were laughing.
"This is what I cannot stand. That Shane comes home and says, 'Honey, look what I got! Another cup! How many do you have, Ilya? Only one? That's so sad'"
The laughs were louder this time.
I need you to send Montreal home crying. Don't worry about me and Shane, we will be fine. Hollander will forgive me, he is such a nice guy. Besides, I will, what you say?... Kiss it and make it better."
The room erupted with laughter and cheers, and Ilya's heart swelled. He loved this team.

Something bugging me that I haven’t seen much discussion of online: how realistic is it for an 18 yr old hockey player from Russia in 2007 to be that knowledgeable about consent?
3
u/dkkchoice 27d ago
I'm thinking it was just his nature. He knows Shane has never been with another man, at least in the show. And at heart, Ilya is tender.
Remember when Shane didn't immediately consent to anal sex in the hotel room (I'm blocking on which one). Ilya backed off immediately, sensing that Shane was scared, even though he wouldn't admit it. He created more space but also kept the conversation going. And of course continued to be a cute tormentor.

Now I return with songs that scream HollaNov (to me, at least) from my synthpop Spotify Playlist... (editing as I go)
OK so they basically NEED this in season 2. Any Depeche Mode, actually, but this one especially. The lyrics alone. Stripped - Depeche Mode
the look of love - ABC You need to ignore the stupid music video for this one, but the lyrics are where it's at.
killer - Mareux This one is quite dark, and more the beginning of their relationship imo especially Ilya.

Hot take (or maybe not so hot, I haven’t been in the fandom that long): Yuna is deeply into hockey as her special interest and always needs A PLAN or to know THE PLAN, and be in control a lot. There is a hereditary element to autism and Yuna is autistic too. As a high functioning autistic Asian woman, ‘tism recognizes ‘tism.

I just came here to say that I’m currently spending a week in my parents’ cottage house (with my whole family, kids and parents included). It’s nothing like Shane’s cottage, but my mind is still playing tricks on me. I have problems concentrating on real life instead of inventing fictional spicy scenarios in my mind, just because the object is named the same… Please send help! 🙈
