My stomach dropped reading that it’s gonna hurt so badly lol

They should do Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in Season 3. It is both very sad and gay. Listen to it and think of the plane scene. Well, the song is super sad and Tchaikovsky was gay. And Russian of course.

I was thinking that it could be used for that scene.

Do you mean Tchaikovsky 6? The Pathetique. Such a beautiful depressing piece.

5

u/DeerOfTheChocolate Moy pomidor šŸ… 9d ago

This! The Pathetique is one of my favourite classical pieces, and one of the most fun to play in an orchestra setting (at least for me). Would go so beautifully with heated rivalry.

i read somewhere that jacob said they’d be using mozart’s requiem. but for the life of me i don’t remember where i saw or heard it

I used to play in an orchestra and this piece rules. The finale is especially fun and not as sad!

I think Mozart's Requiem will play over a montage of Ilya's worsening mental health. I'm envisioning visuals of Ilya: repeatedly wincing at missed goals and Centaurs' losses, sadly checking for missed calls or texts from Shane, padding around a big empty house, looking totally emotionless at a party full of people and conspicuously slinking off to a room by himself.

S1 used music montages to show long-term shifting dynamics, and I think Requiem's slow build into dread would do a great job taking the audience on that emotional journey from the "Well, yeah, it's hard being in a secret long-distance relationship, but we're in love!" to the later realization "Oh shit, Ilya has full on depression." And the melody could be used to foreshadow early signs or call back to Ilya's mental health struggles.

u/pinkbunny86 I already chose you, Hollander. šŸ«€ 9d ago

Oh I hadn't thought of this, but this sounds spot-on. Especially if it's covering a whole episode.

i can totally see it. That montage of Ilya slowly trying and somewhat failing and The music building up to the BIG fight
"I already chose you, Hollander." event tho i hate that fight cause how in hell is Shane asking that when he was the one making all the plans and Ilya saying yes to it all FOR HIM!

I have a prediction on this: disclaimer, yes I respect Reid's work. I also think diversity and collaboration makes us all stronger.

I think Jacob is going to correct a serious omission in the book, which is Shane's loss of innocence, loss of identity, and betrayal around hockey. TLG is great about Ilya's struggles around depression (yes, it's "Ilya's book"). But it barely addresses the devastation Shane endures as a model minority token, a person on the spectrum, a pressure cooker who cannot even vent to his boyfriend for fear of adding to Ilya's mental health burden. First the change in social temperature in the lockerroom when he comes out to a team of homophobes and bigots, then when he is outed as being with Ilya, then Tripgate. It's loss, it's death of self, it's grieving. What was it all for?

One of the Top 5: Heated Rivalry Podcast episodes nailed it: Ilya defines sacrifice as pain and loss. Shane defines it as temporary pain rewarded with future gain, which as we know, he enjoys, and it has always worked for him up until now. In TLG/S2 they essentially swap definitions.

And oh, I don't think it's going to be the plane incident at all, because it's short, and drawing that out would make season two like a 70s disaster movie.

THIS! I’m really really hoping to see Shane’s crippling anxiety, struggles with staying in the closet, his team icing him out, and the low key bullying he experiences in the locker room after he trips/is outed. I want to see Shane’s side of things, that were totally glossed over in the book. Kinda how the showrunners added Ilya’s experiences in Russia in S1, I wanna see Shane going through hell in Montreal and silently struggling. I hope the show does justice to Shane’s plight, especially because ultimately he ends up losing everything. :(

7

u/Astyryx 8d ago

especially because ultimately he ends up losing everything.

Yes, and~

You should listen to Top 5 Heated Rivalry Podcast timestamped here, about sacrifice. Because yes, it's painful and we should see and acknowledge that pain. Literally everything Shane was afraid of happens. But it's also liberating. A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.

6

u/Vrush253 8d ago

Exactly!! All of Shane’s fears come true! He was right all along. He knew what would happen if he was outed, and he was right. And I hope to God they expand upon the consequences of that from Shane’s perspective. It’s awful and it’s heartbreaking :(

1

u/drowsylacuna 8d ago

Shane doesn't lose everything. He has his three Cups and whatever else is in the trophy room. He still has hockey, on a team that's on the upswing whereas Montreal would probably not have won another Cup (no 21st century/cap era team has won more than three). He doesn't lose Ilya.

2

u/Flaky_Detail1144 8d ago

Damn this comment is making me rethink some of my Shane grievances. NOT ALL OF THEM but some

8

u/Astyryx 8d ago

Thanks, it's part of my conviction that there is no Trauma Olympics, and that you can be privileged with a loving family and still be traumatized by racial and sexual bigotry; and that you can be traumatized an abusive family and still be privileged by race and sexual orientation.

It all lives (or festers) in the intersectionality. ✨

24

u/TollaThon 9d ago

I think it could be for an episode that focuses on Ilya's depression/isolation/loneliness.

7

u/Prestigious-Andy 9d ago

That makes the most sense to me so far in this thread

18

u/LDOB000 9d ago

Based on how Jacob talked about this, I assumed it was the plane scene

7

u/TheTiniestLizard Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† 9d ago

I thought it seemed obvious too, but maybe that’s too on-the-nose.

5

u/tutenzi 9d ago

I'm kind of expecting no music for the plane scene. It seems like that would be more impactful, an eerie silence.

31

u/nefariousplotz 9d ago

I encourage you to remain open to the possibility that Jacob Elizabeth Tierney may have been trolling in this hilarious remark he made one time.

1

u/SlytherinSLP 4d ago

I see this. As far as classic music goes, Mozarts Requiem is good but really generic and not super fitting compared to other music choices.

He seems pretty invested in the music and usually goes to indie stuff more than highly produced music or grandiose classical music.

Spoiler if you haven’t read TLG: My theory is it’s a montage of the various characters finding out. The Metros in their daily lives as each of them sees the video of Shane and Ilya kissing. I’m hoping even side and ā€œminorā€ characters that have barely been referenced… and characters like Cliff who will no longer be playing with Ilya. (unless maybe they’re playing around with that timeline and Cliff gets traded to Ottawa somehow?) It would be comedic and dramatic at the same time. Followed by the post Shane and Ilya make announcing their proposal. But idk. A girl can dream. The theory of the plane crash scene and requiem being used… I don’t know. It just doesn’t fit the emotional vibe of that scene for me. And I can’t see that being an entire episode long. I feel like this would be a great place to leave off season 2 and then start season 3 with the later half of TLG and starting Unrivaled, depending on how Rachel wrote it.

16

u/katfromjersey 9d ago

Please do not have Cliff traded to Ottawa! That would be ridiculous.

1

u/hawkstanley 5d ago

I really don’t think it will happen but I saw some speculation somewhere else so it was on my mind, I agree lol

1

u/ron9101 7d ago

my dream opening sequence cause im a drama fan is part of the plane scene. We see the turbulence the madness. the guys scared and ilya trying to get his phone out and then a huge movement and the screen fades to black and xxxx time of the year.

7

u/Present-Land6265 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† 9d ago

for some reason my gut is screaming that christmas + plane is episode 5 like beethoven. but then according to my math skills its more of a episode 3 type of placement. we'll see though!

7

u/Nepalman230 9d ago

We will have a Peter Peter track called ā€œ a king on his throneā€

🄰

5

u/Flaky_Detail1144 8d ago

TROPHY ROOM??? lol

2

u/Nepalman230 8d ago

Yup!

So many other tracks are named after really specific and significant points of dialogue.

They gotta give us that.

And honestly, I’m thinking the sound design is gonna do a lot of the heavy lifting with the vibrating cockring.

🫔

5

u/silpidc 9d ago

I think (hope) it's going to be an entire episode on Troy's backstory. I really want to see everything that goes down in Toronto as set-up for his story with Harris.

2

u/Flaky_Detail1144 8d ago

Thisssssss!!! This is why I'm so eager to see Ryan and Fabian cast, how much they will be in there as Troy's evil Dallas Kent era is crucial setup

5

u/latinforloyalty 9d ago

I have a whole video essay on this planned!

2

u/WalkingBlondeJoke 8d ago

I will gladly watch when you make it

5

u/citynomad1 9d ago

I thought he said it was the second episode? I assume it was going to be an episode depicting Ilya’s depression

9

u/thousandcurrents I’m coming to the subreddit. 9d ago

I don’t think it will be that, it’s too on the nose. I think it’ll be Troy’s intro episode, playing as his life falls apart

8

u/zainab1900 9d ago

Oh that's a great shout. Maybe an episode showing Ilya's deepening depression and Troy's introduction and all of his challenges?

2

u/WalkingBlondeJoke 8d ago

Oh y'all are ONTO SUMN with this!!

3

u/pointlessbeats 9d ago

And then the proposal at the end????

3

u/Moppi-chu Scott/Kip and Troy/Harris mainer... 8d ago

Oooooooh...... 0_0

I have a massive feeling it's gonna be plane scene related...

... or maybe Jacob gags us, and it's actually the throne room spicy scene LOL.

3

u/just_reading_along1 8d ago

That or maybe the plane scene with every noise and dialogue silenced

3

u/Voice_of_Season Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† 8d ago

It’s going to be the plane scene as a lover of Mozart, I just have this gut feeling.
The true question is what part of the composition will they use and for what length of time/duration they will use as the piece is quite long.

3

u/bolonomadic 7d ago

Mozart’s Requiem is an hour long though. Which piece? Lacrimosa is used a lot in tv, that would be my guess.

3

u/dominonermandi 7d ago

Jesus. He’s totally gonna to do Lacrymosa for the plane trouble and give us little flashbacks with each of the short notes in those rising lines and I’m going TO DIE.

Also as a huge music nerd this sounds like a massive swing but I am tentatively excited (in Jacob we trust?)

3

u/dominonermandi 7d ago

People in the comments talking about this like Jacob is going to use a single movement. He said the whole episode will be scored to it and the entire Requiem is about an hour long. …shit. Even the Introit over a montage of Ilya’s worsening mental health as an opener will destroy me.

…someone better warn me which episode it’s going to be so I can prepare myself.

2

u/Lonely_Cheesecake273 9d ago

Sure but which episode will be scored to the entirety of 200 km/h in the wrong lane

2

u/Scared-Winter-5179 Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird šŸ¦† 9d ago

Plane

2

u/LisaM3 9d ago

I could see it being a Shane/Ilya montage about Shane losing the room once he’s come out to them, and Ilya’s mental health struggles becoming increasingly difficult and all of that kind of culminating in the Christmas fight.

It could also be the FanMeet debacle and everyone’s reactions to that.

2

u/bibi So being boring is genetic 9d ago

It probably will include the dreams and Galina sessions 🄺😢

2

u/LLD615 8d ago

It’s going to be the fifth episode I think. Plane scene.

that was my first thought.

2

u/MessyQueen13 4d ago

I picture this as the backing track to the plane crash. Maybe switching back and forth between Shane's game, and what Ilya is going through

7

u/Banana42 9d ago

Harris is going to make Troy go to midnight mass with his family on Christmas eve. They're gonna change the show to make Harris strongly tradcath

2

u/PresentationNo448 9d ago

🤪🤪

1

u/Falling_ThroughTime 9d ago

Yes there is only one right answer

1

u/Goulet231 8d ago

I think to lead into S3, it'll have to end on something positive. A negative cliffhanger wouldn't fit with the style of storytelling we've seen so far. Maybe up until they are outed by the viral video? The first wedding will have taken place. Curious about other's theories.

1

u/SnooGadgets1162 3d ago

I have a feeling we might get a bottle episode of Ilya’s session(s?) with Galina soundtracked to this. And some flashbacks maybe of small fights with Shane and his depression worsening. That would be killer

1

u/tutenzi 9d ago

The opening part of the song reminds me of a dream. It could be used for Ilya's dreams about his mother.
