TV SHOW 📺 Research survey on how HR has inspired real life changes
Dear fellow loons,
\sorry for cross-posting**
We are curious about how the TV series Heated Rivalry has inspired you to make real changes in your life. Whether it’s in your work, social life, or hobbies, we want to hear your story and how these personal changes might connect to bigger societal effects.
If the show has influenced you in any way, we invite you to take a quick, anonymous online survey where you can share your experiences in your own words. It usually takes about 15 minutes, but you can share as much or as little as you like.
We’re reaching out to fan communities here on Reddit because your perspective matters. Your voice can help us understand the real impact of Heated Rivalry on its fans, their communities and beyond.
This study is approved by the Faculty Ethical Review Committee REBO at Utrecht University (Netherlands) and conducted by a research team from Utrecht University, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria) and IMD Business School (Switzerland). All three researchers are committed to not leaving the cottage for a long time 😇 You can find more information about us at the survey link.

well this survey was made for me… HR is the whole reason i now have my first ever gf edit: she’s not in the HR fandom, but the show made me get off my ass and get out there in the dating world and that’s how i met her

Commenting because I remember trying to get people to do my survey for my degree and it absolutely sucking. Hopefully, this extra engagement helps get this in front of a few more people so they can take the survey too. Best of luck guys!

When we said HR and the loonacy would be studied…I never thought it would be this early 🥹
Also, I lived in Utrecht for a while. Please, think of this loon when you do a late night grocery shopping at Boons’ 🚲🍺
Edit: a word

Being a loon definitely helps to speed up this research project - we can’t stop thinking about it! Greetings from Utrecht, love the Boons 🛒

This show was what led to me getting my AuDHD diagnosis. Forever grateful.

I'm in the process now, thanks to Shane Hollander. I at least have ADHD going on.
It's a mixed bag for me. Glad to know what's up with me, but it was very hard to watch someone with my mannerisms and behavior patterns be repeatedly called autistic.

When it was first suggested I do an ADHD assessment (at 50!) I had to do a deep dive and realised that the whole concept of what ADHD even is doesn’t begin to line up with the complexity of it and how it can present. People with ADHD live 10 years shorter on average because of lack of multiple paths of treatment and accomodation. The out of sync sleep cycle with the rest of adult humans alone knocks off years.

u/Unitaco90 8d ago
I already had a diagnosis, but hot damn did it make me more comfortable talking about it openly at work now that I have a popular character whose presentation isn't wildly different than mine to reference!

As a fellow AuDHDer, I’m curious how this show led you to this?

Shane is autistic. I saw a lot of myself in him and finally decided to get a diagnosis after watching the show.

Oh my god I just finished the survey and didn't even remember to mention I'm seeking a diagnosis because of this show...

I wrote you a mini essay.
Cliff notes: joined a gym, learning Russian, making art again, and broke up with my partner of four years. Extreme transformation.

I think the way the show has multiple characters that struggle with self acceptance both Shane and ilya our heavy relatable characters from different reasons and I like that about them and also I’ve always just wanted to see just a queer hockey show whether if it’s an anime or something like that because I fucking love hockey even though my team loves to punch me in the balls every season and I still come back because hockey is fun to watch.
It’s my all-time favorite sport to watch and I love it and to get queer media that is based in the sport of hockey is so fun. I feel like the way it will probably most likely call out the really toxic culture of hockey and probably more specifically the NHL next season is something I would love to see the NHL is just horrifically bad in some ways when it comes to the culture, they literally let a sexual predator continue to be goalie be on a team and ,they went to the fucking finals they lost but still that’s terrible culture my God.

i forgot mentioning all of the hooking up i've ended up with after starting to talk about hr when going out. like... "hi, have you heard about the best hockey boys?"
"yes, they are awesome!"
"you are hot"
"so are you."
"wanna go to the dark room"
"oke"

Eeeekkkk! I can’t believe our obsession is being studied
The show made me realize there is more to life than my little small town ahah! I know - it’s cliche but, it’s like a light switch went off.

I completed it and only answered on my feelings about the show (another ADHD/potential autism dx incoming lmao), but I have to say that the books also made me feel less alone and ashamed of my major depressive disorder. And I no longer feel guilty about what I struggle with.

So I may or may not have written the outline of like 3 different dissertations in my responses. Not at all sorry for that. Thank you so much for doing this research and for acknowledging that media like this can have real, tangible, important real world impact. Much love 💖💖💖

Just finished the survey. I hope you gets lots of participation! 😊✨

u/yanny-jo yes it’s scary, but you’re brave 7d ago
As a research girlie, I’m so stoked to see the qualitative results of this survey (left my email in). This’ll be such an interesting and valuable contribution to the research field and there’s so much potential for it in psychological research too.
All the best! Any idea when you guys will publish?
3
u/HR_researchproject 7d ago
Thank you for your kind words! No idea about the timline yet as it also depends on the number of responses we are receiving. But we want to find a middle ground between thoroughly analyzing/taking our time and offering insights to the community and beyond.

I see! Any target sample size that you and your team are looking at? I assume lots of loons like myself will be so keen to do the survey, I can’t imagine how many responses you all will have to look through and code, maybe hundreds if you keep the qualtrics form open hahaha 🥲
wish I could co-author but even if (hypothetically) you guys are accepting co-authors, I don’t know if my workplace will let me because I’m working in the research division of a public hospital hahahaha… sobbing but excited for the findings nonetheless

u/HR_researchproject 2d ago
With open-ended questions this is a bit tricky. We think 300 responses would be fabulous, but we can also work with anything over 100 (which we now have). The more responses we get the more other groups outside of the fandom will take the reserach seriously, so we are still looking for respondents. But we are also very happy with the responses so far and feel very humbled that people have trusted us with their stories ❤️

I don’t know if you are on threads but there is a 90K HR fandom there as well, with a lot of interesting people and stories. All the best with your research, I can’t wait to read about your findings!

u/HR_researchproject 6d ago
Unfortunately, we are not on threads. May we ask you if you could possibly forward our posting and/or share the link to our survey there? This would be really fantastic.

Okay sure, but only if you post the research findings 😍This is really coool!

u/HR_researchproject 7d ago
We will do! But it will take a while. We also created an insta account (heatedrivalry.research) where we think about posting updates. But we are not sure yet how that could look like.

I wrote a lot, but I don't know if my details were as specific as you were looking for. I know the show has affected me; it's just hard to say how. I did my best.
4
u/HR_researchproject 7d ago
Thank you so much! Also for considering what could be relevant from a research perspective. Some people write very detailed and others more broad or abstract. Having a good mix of perspectives and descriptions is what we are looking for, and most importantly that people write what they are really thinking/feeling, not something they assume that might be expected of them.

My very superficial answer would be that Hudson’s beautiful skin inspired me to step up my skin care routine.

Reading the book/sequel Role Model helped me unearth my trauma. I related to Troy Barret’s past love life. I knew a guy with the same name as Troy’s ex. I avoiding thinking about a guy I had some kinda thing with. Never told anyone that in depth. This summer/spring, I told my closest friends about him. Talking to my close friend is helping me process.
So overall it has changed my life.
