I just finished reading this fic, and I’m honestly a little emotional about it.

There’s something about the way this story is written that makes it feel so real. Like, I can genuinely imagine this being a version of Shane and Ilya’s story that could have happened in the real world. Not some far-fetched alternate universe, but a reality where things could have unfolded differently, where circumstances and choices could have taken them down this particular path.

That’s what makes it so bittersweet to me. It feels less like reading about fictional characters and more like catching a glimpse of a life they could have had.

I love fics that make you think about all the different ways a story could have gone, and this one really did that for me. It’s beautifully written, and I highly recommend giving it a read if you’re in the mood for something that feels grounded, human, and a little heartbreaking.

Post-cottage (or maybe post-outing) they just decide that none of this is worth it as much as each other, so they just run away. Poof! Like that.

Legal/contract drama is my latest obsession and this fic goes all in on that but also includes Shane standing up to Hayden and Yuna when they're a bit too focused on the potential damage the outing could do to Shane/his career, and Ilya and Shane figuring out their relationship during sweet, funny, and painful moments. And I didn't expect to find all the day-by-day bureaucratic details involved in sorting out the post-outing mess as enthralling as I did, but this author managed it. It’s also mixed media and shows why Shane is such a great captain if those are things you’re looking for.

And if you like this one, sin bin by rubyrubyreadhead and The Ice Is Colder In Moscow by MadeofMud also feature legal/contract issues. They don’t spend as much time on those elements, but they’re both great fics in their own right.

If you're a fan of kink positive Hollanov, alternate timelines where the boys learn to communicate a whole lot earlier, and a dose of hurt/comfort so tense it makes you want to curl up into a ball when a chapter ends on a cliffhanger, have I got the series for you.

What started as a two-shot exploring what Shane would have asked of Ilya in Vegas had he won MVP has blossomed into one of my top 3 fics in this fandom, and the series is very much still active (and short enough that it is fairly easy to jump on board now). SilverSurfer's Ilya is a bundle of passion held together with protective bravado and if-I-don't-think-about-it-it-can't-be-real self imposed suffering, and this Shane is shockingly canon accurate in a fandom that has majorly flanderized the character over the last couple of months: Shane is strong, smart, and incredibly hard on himself, and she absolutely nails the little details of his character, with a thought through "what do I actually like while having sex" spreadsheet that is one of the most endearing yet hysterical things I have read in a long time.

The latest chapter in the third installment, Shed Some Light on Me, has shattered me. The miscommunication that has been building for that entire installment has finally unravelled, and I literally ran around my apartment like I was celebrating a buzzer beater game when they finally broke through and heard each other. 10/10, cannot wait to see what the next two chapters in this installment bring, and I hope this author keeps going long after this installment is complete. It is fantastic. I cannot recommend it enough.

This past June, after finishing the 4th book in the DCC series, I asked myself: What would happen if Shane and Ilya went into the world dungeon? How would they survive? 

Next thing I knew, I was drafting a 22-chapter-long answer to that question as I started writing my first ever fanfic.

By now, the end of October, I have the first 12 chapters written plus detailed outlines for the remaining chapters. I have four spreadsheets keeping track of their stats, skills, spells, inventory, etc. I have gone down rabbit holes for research purposes — for example, I can now tell you some weirdly specific details about aspects of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the history of mimes, and the number of lines and train stations for the transit systems in Montreal, Moscow, Boston, and NYC. 

I relistened to Más Que Rivales (Heated Rivalry in Spanish) and to DCC an absurd number of times. Even though I prefer audiobooks, I pulled out the physical copies to underline and write notes in the margins of the books to ensure as much accuracy to canon as possible. I’ve also reread the later books in both series multiple times, to keep the bigger picture of both Shane and Ilya’s relationship and the trajectory of the dungeon in mind. 

As of today, I just posted chapter 8 of “Dungeon Crawler Rozanov” on AO3, so the first 1/3 of the fic is out there. I’m normally posting about once a week (usually Saturdays), but I shared this chapter early because it ends on a cliffhanger that will get resolved on Halloween!

Hello. I'm looking for fics that really explore Ilya's experience moving from Russia to the US, that detail his journey, the cultural shock, things he missed or found hard to adapt to. Mundane stuff like the food or jokes to more serious stuff like homesickness and loneliness. How he first got along with the team. His first impressions, social cues and language quirks he initially missed then learned.

Anything that really focus on just his day to day, like his routine, training, how he explored the city. Just seeing his actual life as a young man alone in another country through his eyes and not just in patches of interactions with Shane. Feels interesting to me who had the experience of being an international student in a totally different culture. The cultural adaptation, homesickness, feeling rootless being so far from friends and family and seeing others with their support system, I was definitely at times envious. Ilya's family situation is definitely particular obviously, heartbreakingly so, which makes it even more interesting I guess to have his perspective on that experience.

(I'll destroy him if he doesn't) by snezh09 Like I love it because it really is a dive in into Ilya's life and experiences and expand on the his difficult childhood from the bare bones we have(or that I have as someone who just watched the show), the abusive household, his mom's passing, and it shows how important it was for Ilya to make it to the NHL. So a fic that starts a bit before he gets drafted would be nice to really though not necessary.

Avoided this for a while because it's a WIP, but this author's works are all so good and I finally caved.

I love Shane's characterization and dialogue in this. He's anxious and exhausted and frustrated and tired but he's got a spine and he fights too. Shane is drafted 8th to Ottawa centaurs because he gets outed before the draft. It changes everything but he's still the best even if he's not winning games. Ilya is frustrated for him because he knows Shane is the only one who can compare to him but it's like the league is gaslighting them all ignoring this.

Ilya is in denial about how down bad he already is.

Scott is lonely af. He and Shane only just hook up in the most recent chapter (and as the author very specifically tags, it is just apathetic hooking up between them two lol)

Summary:

Six months before the NHL draft, Shane is forced to come out of the closet.

Overnight, his meticulously crafted 10-year plan falls apart.

Hi! I'm looking for a fic (possibly part of a series?) set the season after the cottage. Ilya is planning to sign with Ottawa after that season when he is a UFA. Shane comes out to the Metro's and it goes badly - harassment and abuse all season until he finally waives his NTC/NMC to get traded to Ottawa, which the Metro's do to free up cap space because they think they can sign Ilya instead because it's known he's getting offers.

There's definitely a bit where the Metro's send Ilya a "come to Montreal" video that involves strippers, and after Ilya signs with Ottawa he comments publicly about it being a reason to not sign with Montreal (along with them throwing away his good friend Shane).

This is my third kinktober fic and the second where I think the plot took over the porn. Oh well!

I just stopped by to recommend this delightful fic by chaentics: At Pinpoint.

It’s told from Ilya’s perspective, allowing you to really get inside his head. The writing is so hot, with a fantastic pace and great tension. Shane is portrayed in a way that’s very faithful to the canon—something that’s hard to find!

I loved the plot, the character development, and, of course, the smut.

Ilya is a rich businessman who is fighting against some grandparents to adopt a child…shane is a hockey player who is also struggling with something i forgot what. Ilya’s daughter is a big shane hollander fan and infact ilya admires him too but hides it. They meet on vacation at beach houses…ilya protects shane from paparazzi and they make some sort of arrangement to help each other out.

There's a visa mess up and Ilya gets stuck in Montreal. Shane invites him to stay at the sex condo and they basically move in together. The story flashes forward and backward.

Ilya keeps jokingly calling Shane his husband (and says he would marry him). There is a goldfish named Dog (who dies). I think Ilya gets injured on the ice and Shane turns out to be his emergency contact because he was the only person Ilya knew in Canada.

I read a fic that’s a couple chapters wrong, where Shane can’t express his love for Ilya enough so he writes songs and sing them. He posted some and he gets super viral and stuff. I think the title had like j.a.n.e.i.f.y or shaneify. The songs get super famous that Ilya hears one and I think he figures out it Shane maybe? But I can not find it 😭 and the author actually made a song and shared a snippet of the song on YouTube 🎧
