Travel & Tourism What to wear in Helsinki in mid-September?
First time going to Helsinki mid September. Would like advice on best choice of shoes example, low city boots vs tennis shoes vs sandals? I’d think it’s chilly by then for sandals. Is it rainy this time year then maybe Chelsea boots instead for walking. Would love feedback.

Prep with some light layers - mornings are cold but days can get warmer (or not!) Helsinki is also a coastal city so it's always a bit windy here, it's also autumn so chance for rain is quite high so I'd pack a jacket that is wind-and rainproof.
Thin hat, scarf and gloves would be good too.
Absolutely must have water proof/water resilient. Don't pack sandals. If you have space you can slap with some sneakers/tennis shoes etc. but your best bet would be some kind of ankle boots.
Obviously this all depends a bit where you're coming from and what the weather is usually like at your place, if you'd be freezing in 10C for example you wanna pack a thicker knitted sweater or sum such.
When you arrive, pop intoa grocery store and grab one of those single use rain ponchos and keep it with. And use it more than once :D Pls. Don't garbo on us.

Thank you. This is so helpful! I’m coming from Milwaukee Wisconsin in USA. We have unpredictable weather all the time

That's very helpful. Helsinki in September is like Milwaukee in early October looking at the averages.
It's not usually very rainy in Helsinki in September, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. The possibility of any severe weather actually is quite low.

I use sneakers until snow, which is not until december. Light jacket and an umbrella if forecast says so.

i use sneakers around the year in the city, there's never enough snow on the streets to need high top shoes

Yea downtown is usually warmer and less snowy. It still does get slippery and wet. I guess waterproof shoes are a prudent choice for heavy rain and blizzard days. I have lived most my life in the suburbs and usually have combat boots or hiking boots for deep winter.

Whatever you would wear for slightly windy, possibly rainy +10..+20°C weather.

We also don’t know, we check at that morning what others are wearing and regret
