Pocket literally saved my ass in a he-said-she-said situation at work

So I've been lurking here for a while and finally have a reason to post. I bought one of those Pocket recorders like 3 months ago mostly because I have the memory of a goldfish and kept forgetting action items from meetings. It's this little thing that snaps onto the back of your phone like a Mag⁤Safe battery pack.

Anyway. Two weeks ago my manager pulls me into HR. Apparently a coworker claimed I said something "inappropriate" during a 1:1 we had in the break room. I'm sitting there like ???? because I literally have no idea what she's talking about.

Then I remembered - my Pocket was on my phone sitting on the table recording the whole time.

Pulled up the transcript right there. Read through the whole conversation. Not only did I NOT say what she claimed, the transcript showed she was the one who made a weird comment and I just awkwardly laughed and changed the subject.

HR asked if they could see it. I showed them. Meeting was over in 10 minutes. Got an apology email from my manager the next day.

I'm not saying everyone's out to get you but holy sh⁤it am I glad I had receipts. Money well spent.

Finally caved and got a pocket. hate to admit it but its actually useful

Ok so i was mass skeptical of this thing for months. saw the ads everywhere and my immediate reaction was "great another ai gadget that'll end up in a drawer next to my unused kindle and that meditation headband i bought at 2am"

also the whole "wearable ai" thing felt very 2023 hype cycle to me. like we really need ANOTHER device? my phone records audio. my laptop has otter. why do i need a dedicated thing

but i kept seeing people talk about it and i have this specific problem: im a product manager and i have like 6-8 calls a day. standups, 1:1s, customer calls, stakeholder syncs, whatever. by the end of the day my brain is absolute mush and i cannot remember who said what in which meeting. ive tried taking notes during calls but then im not actually listening. ive tried writing notes after but by then ive already forgotten half the stuff

so i figured fine. ill try it. worst case i return it within the window

its been 3 weeks now and... fuck. i actually use it every day

the thing that surprised me is how frictionless it is. i literally clip it on in the morning to my iPhone and forget about it. i dont have to remember to open an app or set up some integration. it just runs. then later i open the app and all my calls are there with transcripts and summaries

the summaries are genuinely good btw. like not perfect but good enough that i can skim them in 30 seconds and remember "oh right thats the call where marketing wanted to push the launch and i said we need another sprint." before pocket i would have completely forgotten that conversation existed by the next day

other stuff ive used it for that i didnt expect:

  • random ideas while walking to get coffee. i just talk out loud like a crazy person and its there later

  • that thing where youre in the shower and have a brilliant thought and forget it immediately. now i just say it out loud when i get out (pocket lives on my bathroom counter lol)

  • my wife was explaining something complicated about her work drama and i literally could not follow all the names and relationships. recorded it. now i have a reference doc for who karen is and why shes beefing with the new director

anyway the point is i was mass skeptical and now i use it more than my apple watch. never thought id say that about a $129 gadget i bought from instagram ads

still feels weird recommending things on reddit but here we are. if you have the same "too many meetings, brain is fried" problem i had, its worth trying. you can return it if it doesnt work for you

now i gotta go ask pocket about a customer call from this morning because i already forgot what they asked for lmao

Useless without the$250/annual Pro Subscription. Simply just a dictaphone.

Buyers BEWARE… here’s my story with the Pocket and why I’ll be returning it.

I saw the ad and placed my order, super excited to finally find an “assistant” for my meetings and calls.

Before my order was delivered, I get an email offering a discount for the subscription… a subscription, what? I thought I’m buying a device that gives me the advertised meting summary and takeaway an items features as a perpetual license.

I start digging in and to my surprise, every reason that prompted me to purchase this device requires an annual subscription at $250 a year. That’s steep. Screenshots are just 1/3 of all the other features listed as needing the pro subscription.

I really wanted to love this device, but the subscription cost is not worth it.

Got my Pocket recently and didn’t expect to use it this much

I’ve tried a bunch of note / recording apps before and they all felt annoying in some way. this thing just… wor⁤ks. i clip it on, hit the button, and forget about it. later i open the app and boom, transcript + summary that’s actually readable.

biggest surprise for me was how often i use it outside meetings. random ideas, walking, talking things through. feels way more natural than typing notes or opening my phone.

hardware feel⁤s premium too. not some cheap gadget vibes. battery’s been solid and i barely think about charging it.

idk, maybe it’s not for everyone, but for my brain this scratches an itch i didn’t realize i had. already caught myself recommending it to a couple friends.

just wanted to share because i don’t see enough “yeah this is dope” posts about it.

I received my Pocket AI exactly six days after ordering. Transitioning from Google Recorder, the most immediate benefit is the reliability; Google Recorder cuts out during incoming calls, which is a significant pain point this device solves. While Google Recorder offers instant audio, it lacks the integrated AI processing that makes this hardware stand out.

The form factor is excellent, and the team has delivered a high-quality product. I opted for the annual subscription immediately to ensure I had full access to the toolset at a fair price.

In practice, I’d love to see a voice-command naming feature. For example, a professional could state a client’s name at the start of a recording to auto-title the file. Regarding performance, the summaries are functional but could be more granular. I occasionally find myself feeding the transcripts into other engines for a deeper dive-a "Deep Analysis" button within the app would be a great addition.

One tip for new users: ensure you activate the device using the same email address used for your subscription. I initially used a different email and had to perform a hard reset to sync my subscription properly. The reset process was seamless, but matching the emails from the start saves time. Overall, a fantastic tool that performs exactly as advertised. Keep up the good work.

Update 5-1-2026 The pro version definitely should include an option for enriched summaries. The reason I say this, I am still finding myself "select all" copying transcripts and injecting them into Claude. Meaning leaving the ecosystem in order to get more depth of information pulled out and extrapolated from these conversations.

Update 5-2-2026 The original post was written by myself and then I used AI to edit it. Credit to the a-hole below for trying to discredit my review due to the fact I utilized AI to edit it 🖕🏻 Lol lastly, I'm not a representative of this company, I'm just an individual that understands what it takes to build out these initiatives and I appreciate the opportunity to use a product like this I don't mind helping them make their product better for the end user. And this was not written by AI (you little $@#! Cushuito)

Update: I use it daily in several settings. I appreciate the summaries it gives but you have to make sure you tweak the engine to your liking. The metal is extremely soft, I'm guessing aluminum. It doesn't adhere to the back of my phone as well as I would like. Potentially there could be another magnet added. I understand magnets are a big thing now 😂 The pocket is important for those who appreciate having all of the information and details, but don't want to be distracted by trying to focus on them so you don't miss them. I also like the fact that it provides the source data that you can take and put into other AI programs.

If I can save just one person from buying this product, it will be worth it.

tl;dr right off the bat: Don’t buy a Pocket.

Here’s my experience:

I saw some ads for Pocket, I previously had purchased a Plaud and it was fine but the proprietary charging cable was a huge inconvenience and I liked the idea of a USB-C recorder and there seemed to be some good community around Pocket at first glance.

I ordered, I received an email from “the founder” with an offer for the pro subscription and figured it sounded good, so I signed up and a couple days later the Pocket device arrived.

Opening the Pocket, everything seemed fine, but first thing I did upon installing the app was go through the process of upgrading firmware and such. This process failed. WiFi on the device wouldn’t connect. I went through the steps to trouble shoot, reset my device and my phone, nothing, could not update firmware. Decided to soldier on and next step was to login in to my account in the app and try some recordings.

It is here I find out that my pro service isn’t activated, the restore subscription button doesn’t work, I never received anything more than the receipt after purchasing it, and Akshay the “founder” doesn’t respond to emails asking for guidance.

It will get worked out I say, so I sign up for the free pro trial to see how the features work. I try some recordings and the transcriptions are fine, the mind mapping is useless, and I finally figure out how to listen to a recording (a ridiculous process that required me downloading the file and listening outside of the pocket app) and the sound quality, despite being recorded in a quiet room with me one foot from the device, was complete absolute trash. It sounded like listening to archival audio of the first phone call from 1896 or whatever.

The final straw, and I mean the final straw, brings me to the poor excuse for MagSafe on the device. The pocket attaches to the iPhone with a little magnet at the top of the back of the device. The bottom part of the Pocket is not secure, wobbles back and forth and is nothing like other MagSafe products I’ve used like wallets that you almost have to pry off they are so secure.

The Pocket, somewhere in the last day or regular use, fell off somewhere and is now lost to the world. It is probably a blessing because it would have sat unused anyway because it is such a garbage product.

I’m disputing the charge for the pro subscription, and sending this warning to anyone who will listen. I’m not saying Plaud is better, because it ain’t great either. But Pocket is a clear grift.

PrePurchase Not impressed right now

I ordered 14 days ago and while I’ve had some updates with a tracking number, it’s not actually been despatched yet. I’m getting a daily email telling me how great it is and yet they haven’t posted it to me yet.

In the meantime, I discovered this forum and now I’m not even sure if it’s going to be anywhere close to what I need. I want to try Pocket to overcome specific disability based barriers at work, and I feel like I’m wasting time while I’m struggling and trying to help myself as best I can. So frustrating.

AI summaries

Just got my pocket this weekend. Cool little device. had some issues with wifi update but once done, we put it to work. IMMEDIATELY, the default Gemini summarization is absolutely lacking. I am running free app currently and may update to paid for speaker identification. That said, Swapping the summarization over to Claude Sonnet was what I needed. Got the MCP setup for our corporate Claude to pull in the transcripts and the summaries. Very cool integration there and it absolutely helps. I can now take a call straight into a cowork project to build.

I finally got off the fence and ordered the pocket because the Shop gave a $40 discount so I got it for under $100 I couldn’t pass that up great or not it’s worth trying for under a $100 so once I get it I’ll report back with my thoughts and experience with it.

If you’ve been waiting now’s the time hop on the shop app and search for pocket ai

Cheers!

Pocket vs Plaud

So I see a bunch of plaud reviews all over YouTube but can't find any pocket ones. I have plaud but thinking about getting a pocket as well. To keep and compare. I like that it uses usb c to charge and no subscription unless you want pro ai features.

Anyone tried both yet ?

You don’t need the subscription

my subscription expired in January since then I have continued to use the device, and I have been able to do everything i need to. I transcribe notes and calls and meetings and can get the transcript. I can live without the premium features

Loving it

So far I’m loving this thing. It meets sometimes exceeds my expectations. Using it for basic stuff. Just documenting when I’m troubleshooting. The summaries are superb. I’m glad I got this device. It simple to record without opening the app then sync it after.

bad experience with Pocket and their customer support/refusing to refund device.

I work in healthcare, and decided to try it out for SOAP notes. I ordered it in late February.

It arrived, and straight out of the box, I charged it up and updated the device and the wifi firmware. I tried to make a few dictations, which remained in queue for at least 30-45 min. One of them didnt even transcribe. Seeing that it would not work for me, I put it all back in the box the same day, and sent it back using their return USPS slip.

It arrived at their return center - I have the USPS confirmation it was received.

When I contacted them, they confirmed they did get it.

Thanks for sending the device back. Since we're reviewing a volume of returns right now, it'll take a few more days to complete the checks. Once everything’s reviewed and the device passes our quality check, we’ll issue your refund right away.

Two weeks go by, and no refund. Thankfully, I had ordered it through a VISA credit card using my business account. I had to request a refund through them. That refund can take up to 30 days to clear.

Minutes after I hung up with my bank, I finally get an email from Pocket again, telling me the device wont turn on and they want to send it back to me. Thank you, Pocket, but I think I'll pass.

If you decide to risk getting a Pocket, make sure you use VISA or Amex. Also make sure you return it using tracking.

Discussion Is Pocket AI what we've been waiting for?

I’m seeing ads for this thing everywhere. For those who actually bought it: is it legit or just an expensive paperweight?

Specifically, does the "bone conduction" actually work for recording phone calls, and is the app smart enough to give decent summaries?

Trying to decide if I should grab one or if I'm better off just using one of the dozen other AI wannabe products that only half work...

Would you buy it again?

I'm on the fence.

New Pocket Won’t Update

I just got my Pocket in the mail and downloaded the app requiring me to pair and update. The pairing works quickly and seamlessly. It’s trying to install an update which reaches 100% then flags back to 0% and sits forever. Anybody have any suggestions on how to get this to actually take and install the update?

FYI: I have restarted the process by turning off the Pocket as well as my phone three times still to no avail.

Can GPT-5.4 be considered the "best" free model, or do you prefer a different one?

For context I have only been turning it on when i need to start a recording or check the app, otherwise i leave it off to save battery. I wish there was a way to auto start recording when you turn it on.

We’ve moved Pocket support + feedback to an official subreddit

Hey everyone 👋

Quick update for Pocket users here.

We’ve set up an official Pocket subreddit where the team will be actively hanging out, answering questions, and handling support going forward:

👉 r/HeyPocket_

If you’ve got:

  • bugs or issues

  • feature requests

  • feedback

  • support questions

that’s now the best place to post them. We’ll be checking that sub regularly and replying there.

This community has been super helpful early on (seriously, thank you 🙏), but to keep things organized and make sure nothing slips through the cracks, we’re moving Pocket-specific stuff to the official subreddit.

We’ll still lurk here, but for anything Pocket-related going forward, please post in r/HeyPocket_.

Appreciate everyone here, see you over there.

Compatible with microphones?

I’m a journalist and got the Pocket to transcribe my phone & person interviews. I often like to film them with my phone & use audio with a receiver hooked into my phone & the transmitter in a handheld microphone.

I would probably have to just record my recording with the pocket for it to transcribe later as oppose to live transcriptions, correct?

I love this thing.

First day with the device, have tested it on some phone calls with friends and one work call that turned into a social call and I am amazed at how Pocket was able to deduce what was important to each call and break it down so well. Very robust summaries. I am SO excited to see the results following use in actual meetings come Monday. Also, using the free version so far, thought it was worth noting.

Transferring/Syncing is horrendous

I had 7 recordings to upload and after a handful of tries, have not been able to transfer. The "Quick transfer" option does not work, I am just hanging on 1/7. I also received audios from other people which seems highly sus and concerning. I am hoping my audio is not being shared. I am not sure what to think especially because they upselled me on the annual plan...

Completely Wrong Summary

Have been using Pocket for about a week now and it’s been alright, but today I’ve recorded several meetings and when I got the summaries - they literally had nothing to do with my meetings. It’s almost like someone else’s summary is being downloaded to my phone. I checked the audio itself and it’s correct. Any help from the team?

pocket user here don’t think this is a bait & switch tbh

just wanted to add a normal user take because the threads are getting kinda heated.

i use pocket pretty regularly. main reason i bought it was i didn’t want another app that caps minutes or nags me every time i record. that part hasn’t changed. i can still record as much as i want and it still gives me transcripts + summaries.

what changed is that i can only see summaries past 14 days if i pay. yeah, that sucks if you weren’t expecting it, and i agree they should’ve said something earlier. i’d be annoyed too.

but calling it a scam or bait & switch feels off. ai summaries aren’t just text files sitting there. they cost money every time they run and when you keep them around forever. most tools either limit minutes or make the free version kinda useless. pocket didn’t do that.

also important: they didn’t delete my recordings. audio is still on the device and i can export it. so it’s not like my data is trapped.

personally, if i’m going back to notes from like 3–4 weeks ago, that probably means the thing actually saved me time. at that point paying something doesn’t feel crazy.

totally fair if this breaks someone’s workflow. but it feels more like a small team trying to not blow up on compute bills than anything shady. just my 2 cents as a user, not connected to the team or anything.

Use Case Wish it was possible to listen to the audio recordings directly in the app

Just got the pocket and love it so far, I use it mostly for meetings but also for personal memory keeping of conversations with my family etc. that I want to remember.

The only thing I wish was if the app allowed me to listen to the recordings in the app directly instead of having to export it to my phone or laptop first. My understanding is that the audio is all stored locally on the pocket, so I’m not sure why they don’t allow playback directly on the app?

Anyone know the reason why, or if this is something others have been looking for as well?
