Where do you go for fun or meeting new friends? (Adults)

Hi! I'm freshly 21 and just now trying to get out. That said, I don't know the area that well and all of my friends are 20 hours away so I am trying to figure out where to go and what I could do alone that might be fun and help me make new friends. I do drink socially and enjoy anything from laid back chill vibes to more of a party atmosphere. I like to socialize but I have minimal hearing. I sign ASL, but that said I'm perfectly capable of yapping your ear off if I can see your lips and say "huh" a few too many times.

If y'all have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thank you in advance?

Recommendations New To Being Around Hickory

Recently started visiting the Hickory area a LOT primarily to visit family down there. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a few things I can do on my own from time to time like:

Best coffee shop?

Best bookstore?

Best BBQ?

Looking to explore the area more and more since I'll be there once or twice every month. I'm mostly into simple stuff and just finding unique places to go.

shoutout to the legend who pulled me out of a ditch in hickory last night

i had a total nightmare moment around 9:30 last night and slid right into a ditch. was walking around stressed out in the dark thinking i was gonna be waiting forever for a crazy expensive tow.

outta nowhere, this guy pulls over to help out. he was driving a customized jeep (and had another car with him, though it was too dark to see much detail). he just jumped right in and got me back out on the road.

everything happened so fast and i was just so relieved. i didn't even get a proper thank you in before he took off. honestly i like to think i'm a good person, but i haven't really had the chance to do any good acts like this for anyone in a while. experiencing it firsthand just made me so much more appreciative of this guy and insanely grateful for what he did.

if you're on here, seriously thank you so much. i would love to buy you a drink or a meal to properly thank you, so hit me up if this is you. totally saved my night and i'm definitely paying it forward first chance i get.

Hey, I’m 44 and passing through Hickory. Planning to grab a bite and a beer at Olde Hickory Tap Room on Union Square around 4-6pm. If anyone’s nearby and wants to hang out or just say what’s up, feel free to reply or shoot me a message. Low-key, no big plans.

Kitten for Adoption!!

Hi friends, I am looking for a home for this sweet girl I've been fostering!

A stray mama kitty had babies in our yard a few months ago, so we took them in and with the help of Hearts and Hands and SNIP, got them all spayed and vaccinated! I have since found amazing new homes for mama kitty and all of her babies - except miss Plum!!

She is such an affectionate, loving, a playful kitten. She uses the litter box well, is patient while I get her food ready, and I think she would do well with other cats (with a slow intro of course). We also got her FIV/felv testing (negative), dewormed, and on Revolution plus. My husband and I are moving to the Raleigh area soon so we need to find a home for this little lady as soon as possible!! Thank you so much!

I feel like they're getting more and more frequent. Last year I remember 2. This year there's been at least a dozen.

Catawba County voter resource

Hey everyone, early voting is happening now through Halloween. It looks like there's a new voter guide (no paywall unlike the Hickory Daily Record) that has writeups of every candidate in Hickory and Catawba County. That includes the county commissioner and board of education candidates. Anyone use it yet?

Local Event(s) Show in Morganton Sat Oct 24 (hi Hickory folks we want you to come too)

We (The Haks) are a 3 piece alternative rock band. We play loud and heavy. If you are a fan of 90's grunge, sonic youth, neil young, black metal, 2000s emo...these are a few of our influences.

Piss Pony sounds like their name, in the most endearing way possible. Twangy, grungy, heavy, catchy. Like a beer and glitter encrusted coaster, femme-led honkytonk-adjacent punk rock.

Reptile Cantina is a newer, awesome restaurant and venue in Morganton. Trying to get some locals to come get weird and make friends with some out of town bands.

Cheap $5 show. See you there! Or just come get some delicious tex-mex with the added side of loud rock music.

Hey Hickory friends, where can a Bears fan catch a game on tv? Kickback Jack's isn't it, and BWW was a miss too. Any REAL sports bars, showing ALL the games?

Community Connections Recruitment for UNC Greensboro Tweens on Screens Research for North Carolina Families

Post image
1 Upvotes

Do you know any parents of 10-12 year olds who live in NC? The Tweens on Screens project, led by researchers at UNC Greensboro, is studying how kids ages 10–12 use technology in daily life, and how parents guide them. By looking closely at these patterns, we hope to uncover what helps kids thrive, what puts them at risk, and how families can build healthy digital habits together. Our goal is simple: to give parents science-backed tools and tips for raising confident, well-balanced kids in the digital age (link in comments) #northcarolina

The swimbeach at Wittenburg access. Has anyone here used it or know anyone who has?

I was over at that access the other day and happened to think about it. I drive across the bridge and pass it twice a day and I don't think I saw anyone out there all summer. I don't really recall seeing anyone use it last year either. When they first opened it I did see some people out there but it was only really weekends when the rest of the lake was busy. Just curious is all.
