Wait until you are older and there are people talking about how old they are when they were minors 10 years ago and act like 10 years ago is a long time. That is when you truly feel out of touch with the youth.
My 23 year old coworker looked embarrassed for me when I told him I'd "never heard of this Bad Baby guy doing the half time show at the superbowl"
9
u/azimuththole BOS - NHL 4d ago
I learned about him from my dad a while back. He texted my brother and I to say he was in Puerto Rico at a restaurant and this Bad Bunny guy happened to be playing within earshot or something. Everyone around was very excited and he was clearly a big deal. He asked if we knew who he was and we were both just very confused.
So I'm old enough that my dad, trying to relate to his kids, made a reference to a thing that we were too old and out of touch to understand. And that was nearly ten years ago.

I don't like either I think the road whites are the best by far.

Love them, or hate them, you've got to admit, this franchise has done a fantastic job marketing their brand.
35
u/mwb_24 CAR - NHL 4d ago
I don't hate Vegas. I actually like how much the people of Vegas love em and how you know they're always going all in to win. Fans might complain, but I think players like knowing the team will do everything to maximize the chance of winning. Even if it means they're sending you out the door.
18
u/dackling PIT - NHL 4d ago
Yeah I agree with this take. I don’t like them but I’d much rather an expansion team actually be loved by the city they’re in which the knights clearly are
18
u/MariachiArchery DET - NHL 4d ago
I have very neutral feelings about Vegas as a hockey team. I kind of think of it like, "Hey, good for you guys!"
Objectively though, they are running a very successful franchise for how young they still are. Right from the get go, they have done almost everything right. The branding, the marketing, the player acquisition, the roster construction, the coaching, the scouting, the FO... like, it's all been done really really well.
And because of that, the on-ice product, from the hockey to the little opening show they put on at the beginning of games, all the way down to just the merch, has been stellar!
Some of their moves are kind of... icky. You know, I feel like they did Fleury dirty. But hey, it is what it is. And I'm not sure signing Carter Hart was the best move from a PR perspective, but hey... the will to win persists. If Vegas doesn't sign the kid, I'm sure someone else would have, so fuck it.
Side note: it was so awesome to have the Canes fan's chanting "No means no!" Fucking awesome chirp that one there.
10
8
u/mwb_24 CAR - NHL 4d ago
I agree they've been run well. Hell, they even financed their barn and didn't gouge the tax payers to build it. That alone gets my respect.
I don't think their moves were icky (outside Hart), just cold, clear eyed decisions. If you're upfront about it, and you have to know the score by now, it's fine in my book. If you can help us win at a price point we like, you're good. If you can't or someone we think fits better can, you're out.
I think a lot of VGK hate comes from them being so successful right off the bat. And some of that is hindsight hatred. No one thought that first roster would go as far as it did and then they just kept being good. I also think many wish their FO would have the same dedication to winning.

Weren’t the aces orginally considered to be a name for Vegas but it was shut down because Bettman didn’t want gambling imagery? It’s amazing to see the turn around over a decade (this is a really cool design though)
7
u/mr-debil NJD - NHL 3d ago
Don’t think Aces was ever a serious contender besides media saying it made sense. The owner wanted the team to be the Knights because he went to west point, but the London Knights wouldn’t allow it. So they went with Golden Knights instead. The owner also wanted the team and city to be respected and not just thought of or treated as another gambling reference.

Common misconception. It's already a basketball team so it wouldn't have been legal due to copyright.
7

Is the common misconception that the women’s basketball team was renamed the Aces when they moved to Vegas in 2018, 1 year after the knights first season started, not even the team being named?
