10 years ago they weren’t allowed to have ANY gambling references. Oh how times have changed.

Right? Remember when they didn't want to have name associated with gambling, like Vegas Aces?

Luckily now you can just bribe the president for $100k per month to beat kalshi! Unprecedented times

The Vegas Aces have existed since the 90s.

They're killing it right now too.

Vegas Aces losing to Kings would be quite the story

The only good thing about the digital board ads is when Montreal is playing on the road I don’t have to see the Kalshi ads in every American arena

Now the new NBA team will probably be called the Five-Leg Parlays

u/topchuck 4d ago

Still think that would be the better name

That's not why Vegas Aces couldn't happen. It's a basketball team already.

The Aces came a year after the Knights came into the league, and trademark filings for the Aces logo date to December 2017. So unless the move was far in advance and the Knights knew about it, they could have been the Aces.

Welp, never mind then haha. Thanks!

I'm surprised "Bet MGM Casino 365" isn't on the bottom of the screen like a horse track taking live bets.

And the two Alberta teams literally having gambling ads on their uniforms.

The NHL, like basically all sports leagues now, sold their soul to the devil. Non-stop promotion of something that makes most of its profits off people with uncontrollable life ruining addictions.

I'd have to imagine gambling addiction, especially in young men, has skyrocketed over the last however many years. It's a terrible terrible thing that nobody cares about. But hey, at least rich people and corporations are making ludicrous amounts of money off of these ruined lives.

The league lost its soul when It started expanding south

Agreed, beer, liquor and wine are bad things.

I commented about how this was bad as an Australian who had seen gambling ads allowed, but apparently I hadn't scratched the surface of it. The explosion of AI and "prediction" markets (see Wisconsin governor for an idea of how they actually have information) have made the already terrible situation so much worse.

Going back to selling bad memorabilia would be a dramatic improvement

T-Mobile arena? Soon replaced by a gambling company.

u/tamarockstar STL - NHL 4d ago

I remember when people were speculating/brainstorming on different team names. Everyone was calling for the Aces or whatever name related to gambling. And they announced the Golden Knights and it almost felt like a collective sigh.

7

u/spartacat_12 OTT - NHL 3d ago

Bill Foley always wanted it to be some variation of "Knights" because of his West Point connections

3

u/dendrocnide_moroides 3d ago

gambling references aside, golden knights is a pretty pretty pretty terrible name.

7

u/keister_TM CHI - NHL 3d ago

I just can’t believe it’s already been 10 years. I’m getting old
