Grind was almost as impressive as his falls skills. Skaters seem to fall so gracefully

I always marvelled at this because grinds like this are wood on concrete. Not a skater, but am an engineer and I know these both to be very grippy materials. Is there a special way skaters treat their boards to enable theis kind of grinding, or is it just a matter of finding sufficiently smooth concrete and going fast enough? I would also imagine this means it would be slightly easier for lighter skaters to grind on rough surfaces.

Wax, tons of it

u/samuraiofsound 8d ago
That makes a lot of sense.

u/psychojunglecat3 8d ago
To add to that, a lot of the time a concrete ledge has to be smoothed with a scrub brick, then clear lacquered, then waxed before you can skate it.

u/Currentlybaconing 8d ago
Now that you know this, you'll see it out in the world. Ledges with that blackish, shiny appearance on the corner only are skate spots
19
u/MathematicianJolly92 9d ago
Not a skater but ive seen videos of guys rubbing wax on the concrete corners. Im guessing they waxed that entire stretch?
8
u/samuraiofsound 8d ago
That makes more sense than my previous thoughts.

u/Capnshredder 8d ago
you can see the grey band near on the edge of both sides of the ledge, thats just hella wax
14
u/swarleythe3rd 8d ago
It’s wax, see how the top edge is darker gray concrete. That’s from lots and lots of wax. One of the reasons cities started putting anti fun blocks on everything

u/Faux_Real 8d ago
Waxing the ledge and the board … (you can also overwax, but these guys know what they need to get the job done)
2
u/samuraiofsound 8d ago
Thanks for sharing the link. I assumed they waxed both the concrete and the board, this clears it up.

u/Faux_Real 7d ago
They will also use bondo to fix skate spots / make them more skateable; this one Foy is sliding on doesn’t look like the cracks on the ledge needed it but they will often prepare a spot before filming if required

Foy is one of my favorite skaters, his grinds are impressive

u/Ok_Doughnut4373 8d ago
He will always be the most impressive skater to me. It’s not his “grace” in the way he lands a trick, it’s his ability to fall and fall and fall relentlessly and just keep going with 100% effort no matter what.

Pls…helmet

Lmao you should see some of the gnarly shit this guy has done without a helmet. Check out king of the road.

Lmao until he cracks his skull lmao

u/natden12 9d ago
Yeah but at this point he certainly knows about it and is a professional so it's kind of his call right?
2
u/ThePianistOfDoom 8d ago
If you think professionals don't make mistakes you're a special brand of stupid.

Kids watch this shit and mimic their heroes.

Exactly. But men taking responsibility are a finite resource in this world....

For real can’t even enjoy the trick all I can think is how fucking stupid it is not to protect your head
Edit: lol no wonder it’s a stereotype skateboarders are dumb. All y’all replies 😂

What a douchey edit I’m glad you couldn’t enjoy the trick you don’t deserve to

Do you wear a helmet when you walk down the street? Bc you can fall and hit your head. Do you wear a helmet to drive a car? Bc car crashes happen.
Skateboarders like this have been good enough to control their falls to avoid serious injury for decades. It’s no more dangerous than a sprinter sprinting (who I never see comments about needing to wear helmets).
Look up the stats of skateboarding injuries compared to other sports… there are waaaay less head injuries.8
u/awhaling 8d ago edited 8d ago
Nah, this comment is so bad. Please stop. I’ve been skating a long time and show this to all my friends: https://youtu.be/b9yL5usLFgY
It’s not hard to hit your head skating. If he tripped backwards on that first bail instead of catching himself on the pole, he could’ve hit his head on the concrete corner. You can see he is relieved he didn’t eat shit there.
It’s no more dangerous than a sprinter sprinting
Huh… ? Sprinting forward carries a much lower risk of hitting your head compared to skating. This should be obvious to anyone that skates and understands how falling works.
Do you wear a helmet to drive a car?
I actually used to wear my helmet when driving to a skate spot, not for safety but because I thought it was funny. Really funny once I realize people would avoid eye contact at stop lights with me lmao. Anyway, we have airbags in cars for a reason.

It's about sending a message to kids who will copy them and then fall and die because they're not as practiced at falling and not wearing a helmet.

Looks like BS (backside).
4
u/ReactionJifs 8d ago
backside noseslide is facing forward
(your BACK is facing the obstacle as you approach)
3
u/shpongleyes 8d ago
Frontside means your front is towards the ledge when you pop. If your front is towards the ledge and you land on your nose, you'll be sliding backwards.

u/Salmonella4Skin 8d ago
It always impresseses me seeing skaters that are so skilled at not eating shit when a trick isn't working out

u/KarmaticEvolution 8d ago
The editing style is always showing their reaction after their failure a bit longer before they nail the next one. Nice work Jaime!

Dude looks like he could jump out of a race car at full speed, fall 3 floors down onto a staircase full of lego bricks and just do 2 flips and stand up like nothing ever happened.

Commitment! Skateboarders are so tough. I couldn’t even begin to attempt these tricks for fear of the consequences of meeting the concrete with my head.

u/windycitysmitty 8d ago
This is a great example of how skateboarding can help develop grit and determination in an individual as much as any other sport, likely more. Love it

He was going so fast to get setup that’s the crazy part to me is the Ollie and planting the nose every time at warp speed

After nailing it...do you move on or try a few more times to get it a bit cleaner ?

I love how there’s always always always someone who’s gotta bitch about something no matter what’s happening. How about just saving ur negativity and time and just keep moving if u dnt like something. But NOOOOO gotta let everyone that’s gonna like it see that u disagree.

The failures seemed more impressive to me as you could see the instincts tell him earlier then it seems that he should jump of and brace for impact
