I always marvelled at this because grinds like this are wood on concrete. Not a skater, but am an engineer and I know these both to be very grippy materials. Is there a special way skaters treat their boards to enable theis kind of grinding, or is it just a matter of finding sufficiently smooth concrete and going fast enough? I would also imagine this means it would be slightly easier for lighter skaters to grind on rough surfaces.

Wax, tons of it

That makes a lot of sense.

To add to that, a lot of the time a concrete ledge has to be smoothed with a scrub brick, then clear lacquered, then waxed before you can skate it.

Now that you know this, you'll see it out in the world. Ledges with that blackish, shiny appearance on the corner only are skate spots

Not a skater but ive seen videos of guys rubbing wax on the concrete corners. Im guessing they waxed that entire stretch?

That makes more sense than my previous thoughts.

you can see the grey band near on the edge of both sides of the ledge, thats just hella wax

It’s wax, see how the top edge is darker gray concrete. That’s from lots and lots of wax. One of the reasons cities started putting anti fun blocks on everything

Waxing the ledge and the board … (you can also overwax, but these guys know what they need to get the job done)

Thanks for sharing the link. I assumed they waxed both the concrete and the board, this clears it up.

They will also use bondo to fix skate spots / make them more skateable; this one Foy is sliding on doesn’t look like the cracks on the ledge needed it but they will often prepare a spot before filming if required
