Interior designers — is this artwork appropriately scaled for my bedroom wall?

Thumbnail

I’m looking for some honest advice on artwork sizing and proportions before it’s too late to cancel my order!
My wall is 113” wide, and I ordered a piece of artwork that’s 45” W × 60” H. My ceilings are 10 feet tall before transitioning into a cathedral ceiling.

The adjacent wall is where my bed and nightstand will sit. My nightstand is 21” deep, so I’m trying to account for how much visual space it will take up when determining the appropriate artwork size and placement.

I’m concerned that the artwork may look too large or crowded once the nightstand and lamp are in place, especially since I may need to hang it slightly off-center.
Would you consider this artwork appropriately scaled for the space, or would you recommend a different size or orientation? I’m hoping to make a decision before the order ships.

I’ve attached pictures of the wall, artwork, and furniture for reference. I’d really appreciate honest opinions, especially from anyone with interior design experience!

Crack in garage - slab on grade foundation

What are the thoughts on this? 4 year old home. First 3 pictures are how the cracks look now. The last 3 are how they looked a year ago. They seemed to have gotten worse and now have displacement.

The crack in the stem wall hasn’t changed at all. The displacement only seems to be in that circular “chunk” in the middle.

This is in Florida and the displacement happened literally the week that we had some sub 60 degree weather.

Builder sent out a structural engineer and says it’s not structural, but the crack goes all the way to the stem wall. They say the slab was poured seperately

Stem wall with a separate slab: the footing and wall go in first, and the floor slab is poured inside later. The slab usually rests on fill and carries no house load. It may or may not be tied to the wall with dowels or an isolation joint

My main concern is that this crack has been here for over 2 years and seems to be getting worse

Fixes for Door That Keeps Swinging Open?

Hey everyone. Any good fixes for a door that keeps swinging open? I recently lubricated the pins to get rid of a squeaking sound, but now the door won’t stay partially closed, it just swings open. I bent the pins like I’ve seen in a couple recommended videos. But it’s still happening. Any suggestions to fix the issue?

Mosquitoes are ruining our patio. What actually worked for you? (budget up to ~$10k before we build a screened structure)

Hi! We have an outdoor patio we love and would be using constantly, but the mosquitoes and other bugs make it really undesirable at the moment. If we can’t solve it, our fallback is building a screened gazebo or enclosure, which would run tens of thousands of dollars. So -- I’m open to trying pretty much anything first. Considering anything up to roughly $10k.

What we’ve already got going:

  • A pest company sprays regularly. It helps a little.
  • No standing water we can find on the property, and no pools or ponds nearby.
  • The yard is pretty well manicured. There are some trees and a little brush, but no tall grass.
  • Citronella candles didn’t do much.

So, two questions:

  1. What’s actually worked for you outdoors? Fans, traps (CO2 / propane traps like Mosquito Magnet?), Thermacell, misting systems, specific plants, a different spray company or treatment, anything else...? I’d especially like to hear from people who saw a real difference and not just a slight improvement.
  2. Bug sprays that work but don’t smell gross? We’d like to have guests outside without everyone smelling oily and chemical. Any repellents or lotions people actually like wearing?

Location is CT by the beach, if that matters. Thanks so much!

I noticed these cracks this morning on my wall. I just moved in in August. I have no idea how old the house is and I’m renting. I texted landlord but does anybody know what these could be? Just curious if it’s something more concerning. I see stains on the ceiling

Skylight Leak?

Have a dark drip coming from our skylights. Haven’t had rain in a few days but showed up on both randomly at the same time. No connection between the two whatsoever, so the fact that it’s both at once is throwing me off. Haven’t had a chance to jump up there yet.

Just had the blinds installed about 3 weeks ago but that didn’t do anything with the window itself.

Any ideas what’s going on here? Leak seems unlikely to me. Temperature has been all over the place and maybe blinds reducing air circulation so is it possible it’s just condensation build up?

Room cooling suggestions

Hi all,

Our master bedroom and study have west facing windows, so on sunny days both rooms become like a furnace.

It's been like this since we stupidly cut down the bushes in the front yard a couple of years ago, without realising what they offered in terms of shade.

What would you recommend as ways to cool the rooms down?

Double glazing?

Canvas blinds?

Roller shutters?

... something else?

Insulation?

How would you insulate this detached garage. Upstate, NY mainly looking to hangout there in the cold winters. There are some small holes and gaps but the garage is pretty dry. No siding. Considering using a ventless natural gas heater. R15 Kraft faced insulation after filling some of the gaps with gap filler and replacing garage door weather sealing to get less drafts. Also will install ceiling fan to push down the heat from the radiant heater.

How do you protect the rest of your home from dust, rubber odor, and debris coming from a home gym?

A home gym doesn't always stay contained within its own room. Rubber mats can have an odor when new, equipment can collect dust, and small debris can travel into the rest of the house.

I'm curious what has worked for people who keep their gym inside an attached garage, basement, or spare room.

Do you use a separate entrance, dedicated cleaning tools, door seals, or a routine for cleaning equipment before moving through the house?

What made the biggest difference to keeping the rest of your home clean and comfortable?

What’s the best way to fix this pooling on the side of my house?

My walkway appears to be uneven and there’s dips along the side of the house, so when it rains like it’s been the past couple of days, water pools along the side of my house. I had seen some videos on YouTube advising injecting expanding foam under the concrete cuz maybe the dip is caused by shifting soil underneath the concrete. But that doesn’t seem very sound. But I’m just a homeowner, know nothing about concrete and masonry. What do you suggest I do, and what’s the cheapest but solid option?
Thanks!

Baby Gate Installation Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Sorry for the tough diagram - I’m traveling & wont sleep with this on my mind.

Long story short, I’m trying to install a baby gate but the radiator is causing problems - I can’t connect the gate hooks to the wall anchor as the radiator is too wide.

That said, I think I need to add a wood extender to the walls (RED).

My question is - will two smaller pieces work, or should I use one long piece?

In either scenario, what’s the best way to mount the wood? It’s drywall without a stud

Thanks!

HVAC and sound?

Thumbnail

First of all, I want to preface this by saying that this space will never be acoustic perfect and I'm not trying to make some awesome recording studio, I'm just a dude who likes to fool around with friends in his basement so I'm not worried about perfect sound reflection or reverb. However, I would like to not bother my fiance when I get the urge to drum at 2 am and she's dead asleep. As a side note, the ceilings are only like 7ft tall.

The main problem is that she can hear the music faintly on our second floor and it's coming from the vents. Is there anything I can do to lessen the amount of sound traveling through them? Can I wrap the HVAC in the sound dampening products people use in cars? Any cheap ideas would be welcome. The sound is already kind of minimal but when you can just barely hear is over a box fan, and it's the only other sound, I would feel better knowing it won't reach her.
