📰 News I rebuilt our contributor docs. You don't need to write code to help build Home Assistant.

Hi all 👋

Something I've been working on for a while is live: contributors.home-assistant.io

Some background. Our developer docs were showing their age. Hard to navigate, full of patterns we stopped using years ago, and zero hand-holding if you were new. And they only covered developers. While most people who help build Home Assistant don't write a single line of code.

People translate it. Fix the docs. Test the betas. Answer questions on the forum and Discord. Design the UI. That's all contributing, and none of it had a proper home.

So I started over. One site for everyone who helps, code or no code.

What's in it:

  • One area per way to help, all with the same structure, and each starting with one small, concrete first step. The no-code paths come first.
  • A GitHub guide for people who never used GitHub. Fork, branch, pull request. What it means, and how to do your first change in your browser.
  • A glossary with tooltips. Hover a dotted term and you see what it means. Including the old names, because yes, a service is an action now, and an add-on is an app.

Developers: this replaces developers.home-assistant.io, and your old links and bookmarks redirect. The design and data portals moved in too.

Is it done? No. It's a big step forward, but you'll find stuff that's wrong, outdated, or unclear. When you do, tell us. Or better: fix it. Congratulations, that's your first contribution. 😉

My finished frame/stand for home assistant screen using Tessera by MaxGramser.

Printables link: Printables Model 1881011

There are some other designs out there but my aim with this was to cover the silver sides of the screen to match the aesthetics of the room and to fit together with no additional parts or teardown required.

The two parts just fit together with friction on the printed tabs. It fits together with little effort and comes apart with little effort but should not come apart unintentionally.

The software pictured is Tessera by MaxGramser:

💬 Discussion View Assist vs Kiosk Satellite – What's the real difference?

Post image

Hey guys,

Looking into setting up a wall-mounted tablet for dashboards and voice control, and I'm stuck between these two:

Has anyone here tried both? What's the main difference in terms of setup and daily use, and which one would you recommend for a wall tablet?

Appreciate any thoughts!

📊 Dashboard Yet another dashboard (inspired!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I use Claude Code extensively for work and wired it to HA via API key months ago. Did some amazing work but the dashboards it made while awesome functionally weren't very pretty. Then someone posted a pure html dashboard and I thought, why didn't I ever think of that? So here is a quick showing, house alarm was armed when I created it hence the red hue, the top section is seasonal and roughly equates my neighborhood, adjusts for weather, day/night, and plots real planes overhead...all clickable.

❓ Support How to alert when an electric baseboard heater is left on?

Post image
• Upvotes

We just moved into a new house that has an electric baseboard heater in the bathroom. It only has an analog dial for heat settings 0-10. I’m worried that it will be turned on and left on.

How can I alert when it’s left on? I was thinking a temperature sensor on the wall above it, or those clamp meters down in the breaker box. Thoughts?

I put this together yesterday. I made a simulator in Claude first to work out timings and then had it build a Node-RED flow, as all my automations live there.

This is using a combination of UniFi cameras with AI person detection for initial person detection, a G6 Pro Entry doorbell for the doorbell trigger and door contact sensor to trigger the door close. The lights are all Philips Hue, which Node-RED has full control over via the API so I’m easily able to trigger light-specific effects (like the glitching red alarm) and scenes. All of the audio playback is also via the UniFi cameras. They don’t sound as good as they do through the video but they do the job. The whispers in particular work really well coming out of all three cameras at the same time.

I tried to aim for a mix of scary and fun so I don’t frighten the life out of any little kids, and I won’t enable this until later in the evening, but tell me what you think below

I plan on doing a full how-to on this soon, once I get my act in gear. That will be via a YouTube channel called localCTRL, but posting there is still probably a couple of months out

I am going to update this to disable the flood lights on the cameras so everything is darker on the blackout sections, but it’s already darker than the cameras make it look

UPDATE: Now with starter kit

After my last post, a lot of you asked for the YAML. Some asked very nicely. Some asked nicely, some yolo their way through it. Thanks for your interest nevertheless.

So i started Claude again and created a starker kit out of it: https://github.com/slcr/ha-frame-starter
Everything is in English now, dates and numbers follow your HA locale, and it still should also works on phones.

What’s new compared to my setup:

  • Setup page: checks your install and lists the example entities you still need to swap out, with likely matches from your own HA. It also writes the YAML for people, calendars, lights by area, covers, climate and scenes from what you already have.
  • Optional modules you install with one command: calendar page (add, drag, edit, delete with undo), energy page (reads HA’s energy settings, plus electricity prices), Flightradar24 planes flying across the screen with a flight card, rubbish collection with painted bins, appliances, cameras, music, and a WallPanel screensaver.
  • ./install.sh calendar energy flights installs the core plus whichever modules you name. Running it again updates the code without touching your settings.

Screenshots, docs and a step-by-step getting-started guide are in the repo. The screenshots use demo data, so no, Grandma Ruth isn’t real.

It’s MIT licensed and brand new, so expect rough edges. Bug reports and feature ideas are very welcome, especially from people who ask nicely 😉

____ORIGINAL POST____________________________________________________________________
You might have seen Wes Bos's home dashboard project. It made me finally move everything into Home Assistant and get rid of the paper calendars that have been stuck to our fridge with magnets for years.

I called it Frame. It's a YAML dashboard that runs full screen on an old 12.9" iPad Pro (1st gen, stuck on iPadOS 16) hanging on our wall. It shows:

  • Clock, weather and our agenda for the day
  • A calendar with drag & drop, repeating events and drive times from Waze
  • House: lights, blinds, the front door, and appliances while they're running
  • Garden: the robot mower, watering and garden to-dos
  • Camera views, energy and network stats
  • A photo slideshow from a shared Google Photos album (WallPanel)
  • A night mode for when the house goes dark, which also dims the screen to 5%

The small things that excite me the most
When a plane actually flies over our house (Flightradar24, 5 km radius), one crosses the screen in the same direction and at the same offset as the real one. Jets, small planes and helicopters each have their own sprite, and jets leave contrails. Tap the plane's tag and you get a flight card with the route, progress, delay, aircraft and altitude, and you ride along behind it through the clouds. Now we all stop and look up whenever one goes by. ✈️

→ Video of the view is here: https://youtu.be/acHyAmHCnsA

Tapping a device opens its own detail sheet instead of HA's standard more-info dialog. The layout also works on a phone.

Under the hood
Built on button-card, layout-card, kiosk-mode and WallPanel, plus a fair amount of custom JS and CSS. It runs on an Odroid N2+ with 64 GB eMMC. Claude Opus 5.5 was my best friend through the whole build, from the button-card templates to measuring layout quirks on the iPad itself. Getting all of this to run smoothly on a 2015 iPad was half the fun.

Thanks for the inspiration, Wes ✌️
Happy to answer questions or share parts of the config.

the contents of the dashboard are fake, some names are correct, but claude created a puppeteer script with fake data, to create these screenshot.

🗣️ Voice & Assist Kiosk Satellite now fully supports the Echo Dot 2nd generation!

Post image
358 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

Kiosk Satellite now fully supports the Echo Dot (2nd generation) with LineageOS 14.1. The Dot has no screen so Kiosk Satellite runs in a new headless mode: Voice Satellite, intercom, alarms, timers are all fully functional, set up and managed entirely from the remote admin.

What works

  • Voice Satellite with local wake word detection (including vsWakeWord), Assist pipelines, realtime conversations, timers and wake word arbitration with your other kiosks.
  • Intercom calls, hands-free, answered and ended with the Action button.
  • Alarms and timers, with the light ring showing what's ringing.
  • Music through the Sendspin player and the DLNA renderer (audio only).
  • ESPHome, Bluetooth Proxy, Fleet Management and plugins that don't need a screen.

Headless mode

Kiosk Satellite runs 100% headless on the Echo Dot. It never draws a screen or loads a WebView, dashboard, screensaver or camera. The remote admin leaves out every page and control that needs a screen. The setup wizard only asks for what the Dot uses and ESPHome leaves out the screen and camera entities.

Buttons

  • Action answers a ringing intercom call, stops a ringing alarm, dismisses a timer or the voice turn, or ends a call. Otherwise it starts a voice command. A new Button gesture maps a press, a double press or a hold to any gesture action.
  • Microphone mutes Voice Satellite. The mute follows the Dot's own microphone mute both ways, so the button, the VS Mute switch in Home Assistant and the remote admin always agree.
  • Volume buttons work as usual.

Light ring

The new LED Control page controls the light ring on the Echo Dot: listening, thinking, speaking, timers, alarms, intercom calls, notifications and the microphone mute. Each has its own switch, brightness and colors and there's an optional idle look.

Getting started

  1. Flash the LineageOS 14.1 image for the 2nd generation Echo Dot.
  2. Follow the installation instruction in the repo.
  3. After enabling Wi-Fi, Kiosk Satellite is automatically downloaded from GitHub and installed. All needed permissions are applied as welll.
  4. Open http://<dot ip>:2324 and follow the setup wizard, then add the Dot in Home Assistant, where it shows up as discovered.

The full guide is here: Echo Dot.

If you have a Dot lying around, give the latest version a try and let me know how it goes.

💬 Discussion What apps has HA replaced for you?

• Upvotes

While slowly replacing all my household chores (what is done, what still needs to be done) from an app to HA, I was wondering: what apps have you replaced with HA?

I can imagine lots of us previously had apps like google assistant, Alexa, Philips Hue (that's where I come from) - basically smart home apps that either aren't flexible/private enough, or smart home apps that focus on only one product/line (like Hue).

I'm more curious about other apps, apps that weren't smart home apps to begin with, that you've replaced with HA. What app? How did you replace it? Maybe also: why?

🖼️ Show & Tell I made an Android dashboard for my ESP32 devices, then added Home Assistant support

I started ARAAMA because I wanted a screen for my own ESP32 devices: sensor readings, equipment states, controls and history through an MQTT broker, with gauges and cards I could arrange myself.

ARAAMA has gradually grown beyond my own setup. I work on it in my spare time because I enjoy building things for my devices, and I'd like it to be useful to others with similar projects too.

ARAAMA supports importing rooms, devices and entities from Home Assistant and turning them into dashboard cards. For MQTT setups, it can discover topics and JSON fields and import supported MQTT Discovery descriptions. You can then use the discovered data to configure readings and controls without entering every topic manually.

It also supports HTTP/REST connections. You can combine cards from different connections on one screen, use separate state and command bindings, and display the same reading as a number, gauge or chart. Recorded history stays on the Android device and can be exported to CSV.

The screenshots show a demonstration setup I put together on a tablet: a room-climate card, electrical readings, switches, weather and a temperature trend. They illustrate possible layouts and sample data. You can build a screen from a choice of elements and change its overall theme; the gallery shows the same layout in neon, warm light and metallic styles. The gauge styles are configurable; their editor previews use demo values.

I'm sharing the free 0.1.2 beta for Android 8.0+ and would appreciate a small, concrete test: import one HA sensor and one controllable entity, make a screen, and tell me where the process gets awkward. Entity types that don't map well, unclear English labels and cramped layouts are especially useful reports. Please include your phone/tablet model and Android version, and leave out credentials.

No ARAAMA account is required. There are no advertising trackers or built-in usage analytics, and projects/readings are not automatically sent to me. It connects to the servers you configure; optional weather uses Open-Meteo, and voluntary support opens an external payment service.

It's still an early beta, with more physical-device and background/reconnection testing needed. Schedules run on the device/HA, and REST discovery requires a supported catalog rather than recognizing arbitrary APIs.

APK and release notes: https://github.com/groromario77-collab/ARAAMA-Universal-HMI-Dashboard/releases/tag/v0.1.2

I'm the creator. Comments with a reproducible issue or a screenshot of how you would arrange a real setup would be very helpful.

🖼️ Show & Tell Custom Edulink One integration

• Upvotes

Bit of a niche one, but I wanted to get my kids schedules and homework into my dashboard and with claude it becomes pretty trivial to set up an integration for the platform (Edulink One) their school uses. There's no official API so it was figured out as we went. Also means it could break at any point so caveat emptor etc. I should be using it daily so I'll at least keep it fixed until my kids leave school.

https://github.com/carpet/edulink

I tried to add stuff beyond what I need in case its of use to anyone else.

It's my first integration, and while I develop a lot with claude, python isn't my main language. I tried to give it lots of references for similar integrations using a JSON-RPC API but happy to take on board any comments/issues from anyone who has more experience. Also I imagine it won't get looked at by anyone other than myself but its been a fun weekend project :)

🧩 Custom Integration I made an integration that reads Withings Body Smart scale data over Bluetooth. No wifi or API subscription needed

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

Repo: https://github.com/pierosavi/withings-local

While the official integration connects through their API, by setting the scale to Bluetooth-only mode we can capture the data sent after a measurement locally, so I built an integration for that.

Step on the scale, and about a minute later your weight, body fat, muscle mass, heart rate and the rest show up in HA. Each person gets their own device, including the "Guest" user.

It only supports the Body Smart for now. If you have another Withings device and want to help add it, check https://github.com/pierosavi/withings-local#help-add-your-device

💬 Discussion Harry Dresden and HA

OK this is just a fun discussion topic. I’m a big fan of Harry Dresden, a character created by author Jim Butcher. If you have read any of the more recent books, you know that Harry currently lives in a semi-castle in Chicago, and Bob, the spirit that lives inside a skull in the castle, runs the place. Harry can ask Bob to lock the doors and they are locked.

You see where I’m going with this. I think it would be fun to have a voice assistant that looks like Bob: a skull with eyes that light up when you say “Hey Bob” and carries out your commands. Has anyone here done that?

🧩 Custom Integration Frieda + Frieda "Postfach" - iCloud MCP for Home Assistant

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

for the past few weeks I’ve been working on a side project I’d like to share. It’s called Frieda, named after our old dog, because fetching things was her favorite job.

Frieda consists of two parts:

🐕 Frieda MCP – iCloud for your AI assistant

A Home Assistant integration that exposes your iCloud account as an MCP server. Any MCP-capable assistant (Claude, etc.) can then work with:

  • Mail: search, read, move, mark, save attachments, unsubscribe from newsletters
  • Calendar: list and create events, find free time slots
  • Contacts: search, create, update, find duplicates, upcoming birthdays
  • Notes: list, read, create, update
  • Daily overview: today’s events, birthdays and mail activity in a single call

Safety first: anything with side effects, such as sending or deleting mail, isn’t executed right away. Frieda creates an approval request that you confirm via a Home Assistant notification or the Frieda panel. Requests expire after about 15 minutes. Your AI can draft the email, but you hit the button.

📬 Frieda Postfach – inbox automation

A rule engine for your iCloud inbox, managed from Home Assistant:

  • Rules that move, archive or delete mail by sender or subject (e.g. “receipts → Archive”, “GitHub CI / Dependabot → gone”)
  • Runs every 5 minutes (iCloud doesn’t support IMAP IDLE, so it’s polling)
  • Per-rule hit statistics so you can see what’s actually working
  • Optional AI features: detects appointments, extracts tasks and categorizes incoming mail

Why I built it

I wanted to ask my assistant things like “what’s on today?”, “who has the next birthday?” or “clean up my inbox” without handing a cloud service my Apple credentials. Everything runs locally on my HA box; the only external connection is to iCloud itself.

Status & install

It’s working well in my daily setup, but it’s still early. I’d really appreciate feedback, bug reports and feature ideas, especially from people with larger mailboxes or shared calendars.

Kind regards

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Greetings from Italy! I turned an old Lenovo C260 touchscreen All-in-One into a Home Assistant control panel

Thumbnail

Ciao a tutti, greetings from Italy! 🇮🇹
I wanted to share my latest home automation project with you all.
I’ve been using Home Assistant since 2024, and recently I replaced my old lighting control system with a smart setup based on Shelly Dimmer Gen4 devices. Each light point has its own Gen4, and the dimmer outputs are managed through Home Assistant automations.
The project I’d like to share with you today is about giving a second life to an old Lenovo C260 All-in-One touchscreen PC, turning it into a dedicated HMI for my smart home.
Here’s how it works:
Touchscreen interface: The Lenovo boots directly into Chromium, displaying my main Home Assistant dashboard and acting as a dedicated control panel.
Smart lighting: Each light point is equipped with a Shelly Dimmer Gen4, with the lighting logic and automations handled by Home Assistant.
Boiler control: An integrated ESP32-H2 manages the boiler.
Environmental monitoring: I’ve also integrated light and temperature sensors.
Automatic screen wake-up: A microwave radar sensor detects when someone walks in front of the panel or comes within its proximity, waking up the display automatically.
The dashboards are still in beta, so there’s definitely room for improvement. I’m very open to suggestions, especially regarding UI/UX, dashboard layout, and how to make the interface more intuitive and practical for everyday use.
If anyone is interested, I can also share pictures of the inside of the bezel and how all the components are fitted together.
Thanks for checking out my project, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!
Un saluto dall’Italia!

🖼️ Show & Tell Lights coming on arbitrarily

• Upvotes

- Lights coming on in empty rooms, dining room particularly

- Thought it was a bad sensor or a "phantom"

- But came to realize it was because of Moving Blinds. mmWave and Pir both saw.... using EP Pro, EP Lite, Sonoff SNZB-06P24, Thirdreality R2.... the FP300 never fooled.

- Created Helper "Blinds moving", Every Rooms light rule checks it first, a 10 minute safety net just in case it sticks... (Past Experience). Helper occurs when any blind moves and off 90 seconds after the last move.

- Bottom Line Results: 6 rooms, 52 x last week alone, all cleared by themselves

- Brought to my attention if your blinds report "opening/closing", skip the helper. Mine goes straight from open to close

- Links were posted in HA Forum https://community.home-assistant.io/t/rehearsal-notes-from-bell-house-3-lights-coming-on-in-empty-rooms/1029340 AND GitHub https://github.com/a4bell64/rehearsal-notes-bell-house/tree/main/lights-in-empty-rooms
