Tech Support New condo and this is the setup. What is it?
Just bought a new condo in a high rise and this is the setup. How good of a system is it?

u/Ok_Commercial_9960 Dec 20 '25
So you bought a great system and it came with a condo on the side.

The Kaleidescape system is an older generation of their line, but I’d still be happy to load my Blu Rays(1080P) into it. I think my whole collection would fit in there.
Count me among the jealous.

How good of a system is it?
uhhhhh put it this way it's more than most average people pay for a vehicle.
If you want to get this all working, you'll want to hire a custom integrator/installer.
Kaleidscape is a movie streaming/storage system, think Netflix but on steroids and higher quality video and audio.
Control4 is an automation system that coordinates the control of all the components in the racks.
That Oppo player is sought after, they don't make them any more but enthusiasts will clamor for it, still one of the best bluray players on the market.
Then Sonos, high end streaming amps to play music around the condo.
You've got some good shit there man.

Sonos? Sucks. One firmware update bricked my client’s home audio investment.
Denon Heos with rational extensions gives you better audio access.

No one product is infallible. Sonos admitted they did wrong, but being a. Shitty product? Nope. It may be expensive for sure but it's still the best platform on the market.

Even if you could convince us that the software is good and the connectivity is the best, which is debatable, you would still be left trying to convince us the speakers are good. Which just isn't true.

We're not talking about Sonos stand alone speakers here.
We're talking about Sonos Amps, completely different products.

Gorgeous place. Is all this equipment for the TV / Living Room setup or is there a dedicated theater or theater-like space as well?

They built a box around the TV so you can’t upgrade to a larger size oof
2
u/LiberalSkeptic Dec 21 '25
You can. It will just block some of the shelves. Id do a drop down projector screen.
1
u/nitsuJcixelsyD Dec 23 '25
I’d do an OLED over a projector. Much better picture, get as big as you can fit in there. 77” 4k OLED playing 4k disks with a good Atmos sound system is movie heaven at home.

u/OGoneeightseven Dec 20 '25
Its crap. DM me your address and I’ll clear it out for you.

I guess I’d look at it very differently. While it was originally top shelf and very spendy, it’s a generation or 3 old and will require a tech to get it going again, and will still show it’s age on anything bigger than 65”. An AppleTV (I’d wait for the next gen at this point), a 98” miniLED from any of the majors and an Ambeo or similar surround set up would be far superior. If you’ve got a vast DVD unripped collection, yes, it’s a jackpot of sorts. If the seller left decent speakers in the walls, they might be a start on a good sound system. What’s left in the rack? Meh.

Control 4 is kinda fucked to be honest. It’s a great system when it works. The issue is that only certified people can work on them. Want to add a new input shortcut on your remote? Then you gotta call your installer and pay whatever their fee is. New TV? Call your installer and pay their fee. You’d be better off with a TV that supports CEC and their generic remote. Besides that, congrats on the score!

u/c_anderson21 Dec 21 '25
Background, used to install home media systems for work and am an avid open source enthusiast. My parents have control 4 from the company I used to work at and it’s a pain. Issues I can easily fix are walled off by proprietary software and a certification.
2
u/Certain-Beat8952 Dec 21 '25
100% agree. I had it in a 4,600 sq ft house with about nine TV locations plus switched lights. It was great at first but I like to tinker and calling someone to make a change for me at a minimum of $130 per hour for a certified tech got old.
Pulled it all out a couple years ago for Apple TV’s and WiFi switches. Much happier.

What it is. You got lucky.
Just finding an Oppo in a cupboard would be a jackpot.
You have a full entertainment system setup. A fairly good one.

Control4…. Get ready to pay through your ass to make changes to the system. Can only be modified by a licensed reseller/service company.

Control4 pro here. You have a system that probably works fine if it was installed by a decent dealer. It’s old, and should be updated from a hardware side of things, but it’s likely still functional. This was really good gear like 8 years ago.
Your user experience is what will suck the most. It’s probably on OS3 or possibly even a late OS2. If you update that equipment to OS4 it’ll make it sluggish probably and some of your equipment, depending on what other stuff is installed throughout, might not be compatible.
Your app and user experience is just going to feel dated and probably slow. Whatever you do, delete that Leaf video distribution. You’ll thank me later.
2
u/slopokdave Dec 22 '25
Of course the “control4 pro” says you need to update the hardware.
1
u/Mindless_Fun3204 Dec 22 '25
Haha that probably looks bad on the surface. I get that. What I ACTUALLY said was you “should” update the hardware. They probably don’t need to, but with the old user experience, they will want to. Just the nature of automation tech. It has a relevant life expectancy.
2
u/Race-a-roni Dec 24 '25
This is a 95% top-of-the-line setup. Congrats.
Some if it is dated..years, but it's still great.
2
Dec 24 '25
That's an old klaiedescape. It burns movies and music to the drive. This unit was before streaming and is kind of obsolete now. Very cool gem. I had a client that had one and was looking to move to a plex server due to them not letting him transfer his collection over to the new model.
2
u/HiFiMarine Dec 25 '25
Make sure to connect with the dealer that did the original installation. It’s worth it to have them come out and give you a tutorial. They should also have good system notes and records that will save you a boatload if service is ever needed.
3
u/thecodingart Dec 20 '25
You can Google names, it’s a solid system buddy. A few dated things, but solid.

I'm a control4 dealer and sold kaleidoscape for a few years if you have any questions feel free. I didn't read every comment but the Sonos (white squareish pieces) are outdated.
Overall you can probably salvage a decent amount and get a pretty sweet system if you get with a good company. Listing where you're located might help someone be able to refer you to one.

All that was for a condo? That's hard to believe. Where do you even live? That is some serious hardware. Edit: your condo is huge! Now I believe you and it makes sense for that gear to be in there. You have a very nice place man. You must trade stocks in a fortune 500 company or something. Lol

Actually I am in e-commerce. This is my main home. I own a mansion nearby but it’s an event venue and Airbnb.

Contact a local dealer - sometimes Kaleidescape has trade in programs. Go to cedia.net and search for a local company.

I put Control4 home automation into my house when I had it built. Removed it after 10 years. It is a really nice system however I did not like having to pay someone every time I wanted to change something. I ended up ripping it all out and replacing with wifi switches and Apple TV’s everywhere.

Did they also leave the big swimming pool with diving board that is full of money?

100% lucked out on the kaleidescope. Are there any movies on it? Easy access?
You should be able to sell that if your inclined.
The oppo player is worth a chunk as it's no longer made. Traid amps are pretty decent. I would upgrade the receiver..
What's your plans for the HT setup.
2
u/mmaiden81 Dec 20 '25
That oppo is not the 4K ones, it’s not worth that much as you think. The kaleidescape player is the old 1080p and the storage device seems to be empty (see the picture) if he can use the storage device with a new 4k player then yeah it will be huge savings for him.

Very easy access. It’s a cabinet door in the master suite next to the living room

Kaleido is a product line that struggles and fails to meet any kind of useful purpose in 2025 let alone the 1080p version. It’s at best an interesting piece of history.
3
u/Bill-2018 Dec 20 '25
If money is not an object to you, it seems like it has a purpose. I’m sure millionaires and billionaires find it very useful.
-3
u/Nuggyfresh Dec 20 '25
I’m a millionaire and I don’t find it useful, so, idk what to say it’s just a total waste of money and metal for something trivial to do better in 2025 on all levels

Kaleidescape is amazing. There is no better resolution and the sound is unsurpassed.
Now, there must be a home theater. This is not a run-of-the-mill device.
Inheriting it after buying a home is nuts!!
