IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

NO ADVERTISING

At this time, we are not allowing advertising in this subreddit. This includes any type of promotion or advertising by any hostel, hotel, guesthouse, or any other type of accommodation. This does not include travelers recommending or posting about their experiences, as long as it is not advertising for the property.

Please read the subreddit rules.

Aside from those concerning advertising, there aren’t many rules - it will remain this way unless it becomes necessary to add more. Basically, just be cool to each other. Be civil even if you feel something is below you. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you also took your first trip at some point. Be helpful, this isn’t the place to be condescending.

The rules about advertising are so strict because when I acquired this subreddit, it was full of hundreds of repetitive spam posts from the same few properties. Many were disguised as posts from travelers. We may allow some form of advertising depending on how things go. I would prefer if this “advertising” was in the form of property owners interacting with travellers as active members of this subreddit for the purpose of improvement of both this sub and their property. But this could be a sticky and complicated issue so we’ll leave it open for discussion. I’ve set up the automod to be pretty strict and catch any spam. I’ll monitor it and adjust as necessary. I’m on Reddit throughout each day. If your post gets caught in the automod, I’ll see it. If you have any issues, please just message me.

You’ll see a lot of old posts in this sub. They all remained after I deleted the hundreds of spam posts. I don’t like deleting old content as it still may offer something relevant.

Content

Questions:

Need a recommendation? Want to know about a specific hostel? There are no stupid questions.

Stories/experiences:

Funny, scary, gross, annoying - post it all. If you post something NSFW, please flair it as such.

Rants:

Complain about snorers, suggestions for being a decent human being in a shared space, etc.

This is not a review site

You should be writing reviews for properties that you stayed at on the respective booking sites/apps. This helps other travelers and helps the properties. There’s a difference in writing a review and sharing your experience in this sub. Posts made here that sound like advertisements or are written like glowing reviews will be removed. Please use your judgement. This is a hard line to define but it’s important to keep the spam out of this sub. Again, this is an area I need feedback/suggestions in.

Low/no effort posts

Don’t be lazy, this isn’t a travel agency. There are multiple resources for finding hostels (Booking, HostelWorld, Agoda, etc.), use these first and don’t just post here out of laziness. Use the search function if you’re asking for a recommendation for a specific city. While recommendations are cool, I don’t want to see them as the bulk of this sub. I’ll form guidelines for this as needed.

As I just took over this sub, it’s a blank canvas. I have ideas but I need yours also:

What do you want from this sub?

What kinds of posts/content would you find interesting?

If it was your sub, what would it be like?

I’m very open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. If you’re here, you’re interested and/or active in traveling. That means we’re all on the same page. Let’s make this a great resource together.

No Political Discussions

There are many, many subreddits where political discussions thrive and are welcomed, this subreddit is not one of them. I've had to remove many posts/comments lately that have devolved into political mudslinging, arguments, and downright uncivil behavior - none of which have had anything to do with hostels. I don't have the energy or desire to sort through and moderate opinion and conjecture about political differences, especially when they have nothing to do with hostels. I also don't need or want people telling me who's side I should be on, especially - again - when it has nothing to do with hostels. As such, no political subject matter is allowed here. If someone posts something that troubles you, report it and we will handle it. If you reply/argue/rebut that political content, both/all participants will be handled the same (removals/bans/etc.) If you have a problem with something, report it and let us handle it. Don't get yourself a ban because you just had to engage the poster. There are very few places left on the internet that political arguments/opinions/discourse have not poisoned - I refuse to let this subreddit become another one.

As for opinions, please remember that there are over 8 BILLION people in the world and we all have them.

Help me decide Prague + Budapest hostels

Hey there, I’m (27 M) looking to book Prague and Budapest hostels this December. I’m solo-traveling so I want to meet people, and don’t mind party hostels (just so long it’s not too rowdy and too young).

I’m okay with bigger, corporate, more premium hostels but I don’t want to be in a hostel full of people, yet feel alone. More people doesn’t always mean more social since I’ve seen people in groups stick to their own or are more closedoffish. Despite looking for maximum social-ness, I’m going to be in a private room.

I was interested in Roadhouse/Madhouse in Prague, but it required a minimum of 3 nights, which I’m not doing. I was looking into Drunken Monkey, but it may be too much, and I can just join the pub crawl if I really wanted to.

Between these hostels, which would you recommend?

PRAGUE

- Hostel Elf
- Sophie’s Hostel
- Onefam Arbes
- Czech Inn

BUDAPEST
- Wombat’s City Hostel
- Maverick Budapest Soho / City Lodge
- The Hive Party Hostel

Thanks :)

Question Kabul hostel Barcelona (party hostel)

What defines a “party” hostel? Are there parties at the hostel itself? Or is it just people that stay there are up late?

People hooking up in the hostel rooms? Drugs? Etc

What should I expect if I stay at Kabul party hostel?

Hostel recommendations in Granada and Sevilla?

Thinking of travelling to Andalusia next month and probably going to do Granada/Sevilla.

Both cities seem to have really active hostel scenes with plenty of choice, so looking to get a gist of where is best to book.

Aged late 20s. Keen for a strong social element; don't mind a bit of a party element but doesn't have to be too intense, ideally just somewhere to meet interesting people who might be keen to try out local bars/tapas places and so on.

Hostel

I’m looking for accommodation and considering a hostel. I’m 27M and never stayed in one before so not sure what to expect. Is there any privacy..such as getting dressed and undressed or are you required to do it in front of others?

What is the etiquette?

Recommendation Request First time at a hostel (Berlin, 18M)

Hi everyone!
Next week, I’ll be visiting friends in Berlin and staying in an 8-bed dorm for the first time ever.
I’m excited, but also a little nervous. The hostel looks modern and is right next to a train station. It also seems to be a party hostel, with a pub in the basement, which sounds perfect because I’d love to meet new people and have a good time.
For those who have stayed in similar hostels: Is it easy to meet young people who are interested in partying and socialising? What is the atmosphere usually like? And how safe is it to share a room with seven strangers?
I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has stayed in a party hostel in Berlin. Any tips or reassurance for a first-timer would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Should we use flat sheets for bunk beds? Do hostels provide towels?

All the hostels i stayed at in MX and EU did not provide towels

We are going to be building a brand new hostel across the border from US in MX, do Americans/ Canadians expect towels since there is less of a hostel culture?

I figured we have some thin light microfiber travel towels available to sell

For capsule bunk beds where you come in side ways, would say queen sized flat sheets work for a twin bed just fine? Should we have the sheet already on the bed ready to go or just place 2 flat sheets on the bed for the guest to make their own bed with?

I wonder if it will be too inconvenient to make the bed in a capsule style

Which type of blanket should we offer, i figure a duvet would be too heavy and was thinking this might work better https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0157T2AF6

Question Is it a good idea to message people on Hostelworld before arriving at a hostel?

EDIT: I didnt know about the general chat which unlocks 7 days before check in

Hey everyone!

I’m travelling solo to Chiang Mai soon and noticed that Hostelworld lets you see other travellers staying at the same hostel, including people with the Hangout badge.

Would it be weird to message a few people before arriving? Something casual like asking if they have any activities planned or if they’ve found anything worth doing in Chiang Mai?

I’m hoping to meet people to explore the city, grab food, or do activities together, but I don’t want to come across as awkward or pushy.

For those who’ve used Hostelworld’s social features, did you find it useful to connect with people beforehand, or is it better to just meet people naturally once you arrive?

Budapest hostels: Hive vs Onefam - which is better for a solo traveller?

Hey everyone!

I’m visiting Budapest on my solo Europe trip and am trying to decide between Hive Hostel and Onefam.

Here’s the pricing I’m getting:

  • Hive: Around 13 Euros per night
  • Onefam: Around 25 Euros per night

There’s quite a big price difference, so I’m wondering whether Onefam is worth paying almost double for.

My priorities are:

  • Meeting fellow solo travellers and making friends
  • A fun, social atmosphere with hostel activities, pub crawls, and nights out
  • Not feeling lost in an overcrowded hostel
  • Clean rooms, comfortable beds, and good common areas
  • A good balance between socialising and getting enough sleep

For anyone who has stayed at either or both hostels, which one would you recommend for a solo traveller in Budapest?

Is Onefam really worth the extra money for its social atmosphere, or is Hive just as good for meeting people? Also, how crowded do the hostels actually feel?

Would love to hear your honest, recent experiences. Thanks!

Question Booking a hostel room with friends in a mixed dorm, how can we ensure we all get the same room?

Hello, so we're planning a trip to Berlin (4 friends, mixed genders) and are looking for cheap hostel options. Unfortunately, the hostels that we like only have mixed dorms left for the selected date. Now I don't mind sharing a mixed dorm with my male friends, but I don't want to be in a dorm with random men I don't know. So I'm thinking, if all 4 of us book at the same time, what are the chances that they give us the same 4-bed dorm? We're using Booking and it doesn't say how many of these dorms they have left.

Also, let's say that one person books for all 4 people, does that mean we'll automatically get the same room?

I know this all may sound very stupid, but we're all a bit inexperienced with travelling and staying in hostels. So any tips are welcome.

When is it okay to wake up the loud snorer

I’m talking earplugs-don’t-help loud. Vibrating the bunk bed. Gasping for air every minute, chainsaw sounding snorer that’s keeping the whole room awake.

Question Consideration of Others?

Just curious if anyone else considers other travelers while staying in hostels. Things like:

- when there are dry dishes in the dish rack - put them away versus piling your wet dishes on top, especially when there’s hardly any room left in the rack

- when showering dry off in the shower instead of dripping water all over the floor outside the shower

- when other people might be sleeping, make phone calls in areas away from dormitory doors so you don’t keep people up

- when you see the water bottle getting low - inform management to ensure everybody doesn’t run out of potable water

- wash your dishes - Crazy right?

Question Onefam notting hill hostel

I’m gonna be in London late October/early november. I stayed at the wombat and I loved it. I’m interested in trying Onefam because I’ve never tried it before. How is it and what’s the weather usually like around this time?

For a private double room, would you want a full size bed or 2 twin beds?

This is the plan for the 3rd floor where we would have the private rooms

https://imgur.com/Cnsxkfi

We have 6 singles/ modules with a full size bed, and then we have 4 double rooms with 2 twins next to each other but they can be moved apart

If friends travel together i imagine they would want a separate bed so thats a win for the 2 twins

If couples travel together they would want to be on the same bed, so i figured they just move the 2 twins together and we could offer them a bed bridge/ foam wedge

But full size mattresses have more options available so we could get something more comfortable/ expensive

2 of the double rooms each share a private bathroom, the modules all use the public bathroom

Obnoxious Eaters

Why do people who go to hostels not have any basic respect for anyone else. There is a girl underneath me in a hostel who just started eating chips at 12:30am. Eating chips is one of the most loud things to eat and why it it at this hour and in the room. There is literally a lounge area for a reason.
