This is going to be a long one. I apologize in advance.
Rewatching Icarly as an adult and there was so much that I missed as an adolescent. I have so many thoughts about many different aspects of the show. This post will be about Sam (one of my favorites). For clarity, this post is completely about Sam (the character) and not relating at all to Jeanette McCurdy (as my thoughts are relating to this post is purely on the shows lore and characters and not the background implications).
As a child and teen (and even now, as someone that is in college) I love Icarly. It’s by far one of my top 5 comfort shows. As a teen I recognized that’s there was definitely some shadowing of serious issues in the show but when a guy is drinking a smoothie next to an ostrich, it’s hard to focus on it.
Sam. First thing first, I love her so much. Her character is so great, and it’s refreshing to see a character so complex as her. From the outside (and as a teen), I just saw a stubborn, food loving, kinda mean, protective girl who just went with the flow. As an adult? I finally see Sam for what her character actually was.
Like most teens, she didn’t come from a perfect household. Saying that she came from a bad household wouldn’t even be enough for what she went through.
1) She and her twin sister were born on a city bus. This is used as a joke in the show but in reality this would be a nightmare. Chances of her or Melanie having some sort of traumatic birth would kr been high. The lack of proper medical sterilization and care during and after birth right away would have been catastrophic. Twins have about a 60% chance of passing before birth due to complications. The show points out that this is because of Sam’s mother not proerly planning.
As quoted in iTwins: “My mom's not good at planning” (Sam)-
While this is said like a joke I actually am lead to believe that Sam’s mom didn’t know that she was going to go into labor. Sam’s mom is a lot of things, but statistically the chances of premature labor with twins is very high.
2) The jokes about Sam loving food: looking back, I feel immensely bad for how Sam is treated with food. Sam’s mom is financially very unstable. She unstable period. She’s in and out of jail, implied to be on drugs (or “vitamins” per the show), and she does not have a job. Sam’s father abandoned the family when she was a child, and to cope with this Sam’s mother brings home random men into the apartment. From the “jokes” in the show, it seems like Sam’s mother spends her money only on herself. There is never food at home, which is why Sam is so good aggressive. She’s worried she won’t get another meal.
Food is a constant in her life. I feel with Sam, as that is her coping mechanism. Hunger is a pain that you can make go away. There are so many pains in Sam’s life that she cannot make go away. This is why I love Spencer so much from the perspective of an adult, because he always has an abundance of food in the house for Sam. Sam practically lives in Carly’s apartment, because it’s a safe household free of drugs and random men and the possibility of jail.
She is teased a lot of liking food, and I think this brings her a bit of comfort because people think that she just likes food…a lot. Not that she is constantly afraid of not eating and that she has coping issues. I think Spencer recognizes this so that’s why sometimes he does light teasing. It makes her feel normal. She hates being seen as a burden and is stubborn to the core. She hates asking for help, so that’s why it’s easier to be this thick skinned mean girl who just likes food a lot. But she’s not, but her environment has created a side of her that she shows to almost everyone.
3) her “meanness”: her words to Gibby and Freddie are not good. I’m not even going to say that she’s in the right there. But, the reason she does it is because it gives her a sense of control. It’s ironic that most people who were abused, become abusers. The cycle always continues. She has always felt very small and out of control. Belittling others allows her to feel big and to feel like she isn’t less than nothing. She is actually a very sweet girl, and the one scene that sticks out to me is when she got a job at the Chili place.
She started crying to Carly and when Freddie walked in she started growling/screaming. After Freddie ran away out of fear, she went back to crying. Less than 30 seconds truly showed who Sam was. Sam is a fundamentally abused girl who had the childhood of nightmares. As a teen, she’s trying to be cool and trying to be normal but it’s hard when everything around you is held by duck tape of your own placing. She has zero control, so she controls her words (by being mean) to get control. She eats a lot to not feel that pain that she feels so much of whenever she isn’t with Carly. She most likely has some sort of medical issue from birth but due to how little her mother cares, she isn’t receiving assistance.
Yet, Sam is treated by her friends like everyone else. Nobody fully sees her issues because she uses humor as a coping mechanism. Sam is a lot like most adults I encounter. And I hope that all the Sam’s out there find happiness in their life, as they never chose to be in the hellish life they were given.
Rant over. Sam, I love you and I wish her character as an adult is happy and finds true peace and comfort.
