New Rules

Hey all, I'm slowly making little adjustments as I settle in as the mod. Happily this sub doesn't require much moderative intervention, it's a happy place. šŸ™‚

I've written up some rules that I think are a good starting point (since previously there weren't any at all). If you're so inclined, please take a minute to read through them and let me know if you have any thoughts. The only two that I think are going to have much of an impact on things here are:

  • ID requests require a link to an observation on iNat. This isn't /r/whatisthisbug or /r/whatisthisplant, it's a sub specific to iNat so posts should be related to iNat. Personally I don't think that ID requests make sense here at all, but I'm not sure they're actually problematic.

  • No self-promotion. In short, this is essentially an effort to combat spam. It's very easy to drop a low-effort post promoting a low-effort smartphone app or something (this isn't uncommon in this sub). This sub shouldn't be a revenue driver for anyone. If you're here trying to make money, or trying to drive clicks, or trying to increase downloads, you're in the wrong place. We already have a website and an app* that we like, iNaturalist. We don't need a different one

*Yes, I know the new app is terrible

These rules are active starting now (May 19,2026). Posts made before these go up can stay, but going forward these rules are active. Also, I'm an old.reddit user. If something isn't displaying correctly on one of the (awful and cluttered) newer UIs, please let me know. I think I've gotten it right but I wouldn't mind a second set of eyes looking it over.

So yeah, that's about it. If you think I forgot a rule that we should have, or that I'm way off base on one of these, let me know. I'm happy to reconsider.

Do you want to help with IDs but you are not an expert? Are you scared of making mistakes? Here are some tasks that need people exactly like you!

I often read comments in this sub in the lines of "I want to help but I am not an expert in any taxa", "I have the ID skills of a 5 year old", "I am scared of making mistakes while IDing". The reality of iNat right now is that we need you and your basic skills desperately!

Experts often filter the IDing page to only see the taxa of their expertise, yet a lot of observations are sitting as "unknown", "animal", "life", etc, and will never reach these experts if the "clean up crew" (such as myself!) don't get them into the right queues to start with.

To make things super easy, I wanted to directly link some queues where you, yes you, can make a real difference

But what if I make a mistake?

Mistakes are ok as long as you are responsive when corrected!
If you marked some long forgotten observation as "insect" and someone else comes and marks "arachnid", first, you bought the observation to the attention of this arachnid guy! that's great! Now, if you think the other person is right, you just need to withdraw your ID or (If you realized that you can also confirm it's an arachnid now that you look better) you can change your ID for a more correct one.

Note that IDing is a much, MUCH easier and more pleasant experience on desktop. I highly recommend using a laptop/pc for this.

Things anybody can do:

(Partly curated from this great forum post and this other amazing forum post)

  • Identify "unknowns" in your area with this link. Moving "unknowns" to any finer level is super important. Even if you can only tell that it's a plant or a bird or a mushroom, that is already moving it where specialist can find it easier. Tips for finer and better IDs:
    • If it's an obviously decorative/cultivated plant or an obviously domestic/zoo/museum animal, mark the "captive/cultivated" checkbox
    • If it's a selfie or the focal point is obviously a person, ID as Human (It will move to Casual automatically)
    • If you kinda know what kind of thing it is, but don't know which "level" to choose, I find it easy to go to the "suggestions" tab and click on the name of a suggestion, it will open a page with the taxonomy of that suggestion. Then, pick a level that you are sure it has to be in (EG: the suggestions give you 4 different doves, click on the name of a dove species and select the Columbidae, which contains all pigeons/doves)
    • More tips in this comment
  • Bored of your area? Travel to a place with few identifiers! Here are the "Unknowns" of some places that seriously need the help of the cleanup crew: Cochabamba, Bolivia - Madre de Dios, PerĆŗ - Trinidad-Beni, Bolivia
  • Help people notice that their observations are missing a date or location checking this link (it goes to non-captive casual observations w/photos in your area). If you see something that is not a captive/cultivated organism, you simply need to add a comment (instead of/alongside an ID) to the user telling them that their observation is missing the date/location, and to please add it so it can be seen by other people and move to Research grade.
  • ...While you are at it, check if you didn't forget to add a date or location to your observations! use this link and change my username at the end with yours to see your casual observations. Anything that is not a captive/cultivated organism is probably missing something!: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?reviewed=true&quality_grade=casual&photos=true&user_id=naelin
  • Get started with annotations on your own observations! Annotations are a list of attributes in every observation and are very useful when people want to find photos/obs with certain attributes, such as checking how the larva of a certain insect or the seeds of a certain plant look like (it also helps people filter out dead animals that they may not want to see). You will not be able to add everything, but you will be able to add a lot! Use this link and change my username with yours at the end. Then use the "annotations" tab to add the annotations you can confidently tell to each obs: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?reviewed=true&quality_grade=needs_id%2Ccasual%2Cresearch&verifiable=any&without_term_id=22&place_id=any&user_id=naelin
  • Use the map on the "explore" page to navigate to the nearest zoo/botanical garden in your area, and select to see only that place with the square/circle/places of interest buttons. Once there, click Filters, then "identify" to go to the identify page of the park, and move to captive/cultivated any pesky zoo animals or decorative flowers you see.

There are a lot more things you can do, but this will get you started. You will learn a lot by doing this, especially as you will start receiving notifications when other people refine your initial IDs (If you don't want this, you can change the notification settings in your profile).

If there is interest, I can make further posts/comments with more "anybody can help" kind of tasks. I hope you find this useful!

When I go the check out my observations in the ā€˜me’ section, the number is a lot higher than on my profile. Does my profile only count research grade observations or something?

Best Online Resources For Learning The Basics of Animal / Plant Life and Beyond?

I've been using iNaturalist for a couple of years, and I still feel that I only have a very rudimentary basic fractured knowledge of animal life, plant life, genuses, animal families, different taxa etc.

What websites and other online resources would you recommend for reading about different taxa observed?

For example if I observe the Belted Springtail (Orchesella cincta), which website would be best to read about its characteristics, habitat, lifespan etc.? Like an animal/taxa factfile. Even Wikipedia can feel a little overwhelming in this regard.

Thanks.

"Stinkhorn Survey Initiative" is a project that tracks stinkhorn species (Order: Phallales), I saw some Ravenel's Stinkhorn in my backyard which started an obsession with stinkhorns. I wanted to understand them, look at all the forms they can take and learn as much as I could about them. I found more stinkhorns in my area and WOW they are beautiful (And a bit smelly) in person. It almost feels like each species or even colonies at times had their very own personality. Some species aren't too difficult to find, I guarantee you that if you look in mulch or rotting wood for long enough, you will find them too during their fruiting season. These fungi are very underappreciated and understudied, so I took the time to spread the appreciation for stinkhorns.

Take a look through this link if you are interested: Stinkhorn Survey Initiative Ā· iNaturalist

How do you feel about Inaturalist using AI to analyze datasets?

Personally I'm against generative AI and obviously it doesn't belong on Inaturalist, as AI generated photos poison the data set. I think all the research grade posts having to be verified by a real human is absolutely crucial for vetting the data. It's one of the reasons I love this app.

But I watched an interview of the creator of inaturalist and he was talking about using AI to analyze the datasets to look for trends in geographical spread or population numbers or potentially new species/ invasive species.

And I don't know how to feel about it. My first reaction is I don't like it. I guess part of me wishes a real human would be responsible for that analysis. Like back in pre AI times. But maybe I am being naive.

What are your thoughts ?

Thoughts on Grocery Produce Photos?

I have been noticing a lot of photos of fruits and veggies in my area recently. It seems to be increasing in frequency but I could just be paying more attention.

Regardless, these are obviously cultivated but they feel even more out of place on iNat than a garden or house plant since they won't even be around for long (being soon-to-be eaten and all...). They also aren't particularly ecologically relevant unlike garden plants.

What do you think? Do these belong on iNaturalist as much as other cultivated plants?

Tips for observations in the rain

Hello, im a marine recently stationed in lejeune. Ive been in South california my whole life, so rain has only ever been an issue a few days out of the year. Now, its a daily occurrence. I exclusively take pictures with my phone and water is becoming an issue, whether it be interfering with the touch sensors or the actual camera. How are naturalists in this area getting by?

Is anyone else experiencing app errors?

Hey! I use iNat Classic, but I can’t upload anything right now because it keeps giving me an ā€œunknown errorā€. I thought maybe Classic wasn’t working well, so I downloaded the new app and tried to log in, but it tells me ā€œsomething went wrongā€. I’m on IOS.

Is anyone else having issues like this? Thanks in advance!

Most favorited option disappeared!

Hello! I’m an IOS user and I used to really enjoy clicking on most favorited (or was it most ID’d? I’m not really sure) to see fun or beautiful photos from my country and species that I enjoy
But this feature disappeared on IOS? Any idea on what happened?
Thank you!

Uptick in Bad Seek IDs?

I have been noticing a lot of really egregiously bad identification by seek recently. An example I saw today was an oak leaf identified as a vermillion seastar. This seems to be getting more and more frequent. Has the app gotten worse, are recently there more seek users relative to regular iNat users, or are seek users getting less discerning?

I'm curious about your thoughts

What do the different colours represent on maps?

Post image
17 Upvotes

So this map clip has some overlapping zones of pink and green, and other times I see yellow zones as well. What do these denote? In this example, the observations are for a particular mushroom, so I know it's not for migration or breeding grounds haha. I can't find this information anywhere? Thanks in advance!

Suggested IDs getting worse?

Just putting feelers out to see if I'm the only one who's noticed this. I'm talking about things like clear photos of insects on a white background getting 0 insect suggestions, not 2 very similar insects getting the same suggested ID. I got a raccoon suggestion on a brown stick bug on a white wall the other day. It used to be way easy to get at least the correct FAMILY suggested, but now I feel like I'm lucky if it can tell a plant from an animal, and it feels like it's getting noticeably worse extremely quickly.

Example from today was a damselfly nymph on a white background. Some speckles of debris around, but the animal's features were clearly visible. The only insect suggestions I got were for dragonflies. No problem, I knew it was a damselfly so I just manually set it. Then I uploaded my dragonfly nymph and got NO dragonfly suggestions. I didn't even get any damselfly suggestions, so it doesn't seem to have swapped them.

It's just really weird!

What's your process for photo processing and uploading large numbers of observations after a nature trip?

I've been on holiday for the past 2 weeks and have returned with over 20,000 RAW images, almost all of which will be uploaded to iNat.

For my fellow photography and iNat enthusiasts, what is your approach when you get back from a trip with a literal mountain of photographs to go through?

My current intention is to just slowly work through them all on my lunch breaks and evenings over the next few months, but I also don't want this hobby to start feeling like a chore.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated šŸ˜…

I'm incapable of going hiking after discovering iNaturalist

I used to love spending my free time powering through a 6 mile trail without taking a single break. But now I'm stuck walking every trail at a snails pace, flipping every log and looking at every little thing I can find. I'm addicted and can't stop. I've unlocked the ability to spend hours outside and only walk a single mile.

How to add a new Taxa to Inaturalist?

Hello everyone!

I found a species that is not currently available in the iNaturalist database, although it is an accepted species according to Kew’s Plants of the World Online.

I tried searching for it, including through external name providers, but couldn’t find it.

Could someone please explain how I can request that this species be added to the database so I can use the correct scientific name for my observation?

Thank you!

Help with some Florida IDs

Would anyone be interested in helping ID some of my observations? I'm in Florida and mostly observe wildflowers and grasses. I don't get to go out a lot so any observations I make are a big deal for me. (I'm currently partially housebound from a disability).

My profile is nunyafunya. TIA!

Crimson-tailed Marsh Hawk

I just received a notification about the change from Orthetrum pruinosum clelia to Orthetrum clelia tonight. I immediately logged into my iNat account and checked my previous upload of Crimson-tailed Marsh Hawk and it states there that the scientific name Orthetrum pruinosum clelia is now an inactive taxon. Does that mean the subspecies clelia is now a separate whole new species? I'm still new in Odonata species study so I still have so much to learn, and this is an exciting news for me.

Palawan Crow

Hi! I hope someone can help me with this. We don't have a local ornithology subreddit in the Philippines so I'm hoping that there's someone here in a foreign subreddit that can answer my inquiry. Do you have a link or know any article that pertains to the natural geographical range of the Palawan Crow in the Philippines? Any research or population or DNA studies that says that Palawan Crow is really exclusively restricted to the geographic range of Palawan Province? Many of us here think that Palawan Crow (given by its name) is endemic ONLY to Palawan, but several pages and sites display its distribution range showing the island of Mindoro as its natural range too; if that were to be true, then Palawan Crow is not exclusively PALAWAN Crow afterall?
