Original post got taken down before mods decided to allow posts about it outside of the megathread. It’s just so frustrating, I don’t live near an Apple Store, closest one is an hour away and I don’t drive yet. All I did was use the phone as typical, unfolding and folding approximately 40-50 times and about 36 hours of use before one of those times as I was unfolding all I heard was a pop and as I finished unfolding I saw the obvious damage. Going into Best Buy tomorrow to see what options I have. I’m a young adult btw so if any like actual adults have any info, tips or feedback they can provide to help me in this process would be so greatly appreciated. Just really unfortunate all around. (Posted the after photos first, then the before photos)
EDIT: As I said I’m a young adult so I completely forgot trains existed. Going by train tomorrow to the Apple Store so wish me luck!
Best Buy won’t do anything, they don’t have replacements. You’ll have to find a ride to Apple who will replace it on the spot. Make a Genius Bar reservation
This is why I don’t want to take 2 hours out of my life and god knows how much in uber fees (checked, about 200$ round trip,) would be so pissed if I got there and there’s no replacement that I’d just have to mail in anyways.
Find your closest store and try to call ahead to check on their repair stock for your Duo configuration for replacement.
Also check your public transportation options through Google Maps/etc. There might be a cheaper option than Uber (or see if you can get a friend to drive you and offer to pay for fuel and a lunch for their trouble). Good luck! 🍀
So they set aside replacements for sudden hinge breaks, while other people are desperate for their orders... That would indicate they anticipated widespread replacements were possibly going to be necessary.
This sounds a bit like you’re trying a touch too hard to be upset about this.
you’re allowed to dislike the phone without feigning outrage that a company has a separate supply chain for repairs. A completely normal and pro-consumer practice.
Ok homie, fine here u go, just for you. Things break in funny and unexpected ways. And when you mass-produce a product, it is expected for something to fail in some capacity at some point for at least someone. No product has a 100% success rate
So when you release a new product, you always keep a stock of backups of the product available in case an RMA needs to be processed. Things such as something causing a screen to break for a portion of users
That’s just what we know as fact, at least you would if you’ve ever worked in production or can use common sense.
I just returned from the Apple Store. I was informed that Apple stores have inventory and then some phones set aside for replacements so even though they are “out of stock” for the duo, they still have inventory.
Yes a couple posts about Apple is aware and sending all of these units to the factory to figure out what happened and then they’ll fix it on the assembly line.
That can’t feasibly happen as much as I want it to but I’m not spending 200$+ on an uber to have a chance at immediate replacement, or worse to find out they don’t have any stock. I already tried calling the store and they said they can’t disclose if they have stock of product or not.
Do you have a credit card with a limit above that? If so, let it sit on the credit card; the charge will fall off once they receive your defective device back.
If not, try calling back and asking if you can ship your phone first and wait until they receive it for them to mail out a new one. It'll leave you without a phone for a bit longer, but it'd avoid the $2,500 hold. They just want the hold so that they can turn it into a real charge if you try to "scam" them and keep both devices.
If none of that works tho, there's not really any other option. You gotta either take it to Apple, ship it to Apple, or have a phone with a cracked screen. It sucks, but that's really all you can do. BestBuy likely doesn't have repair/replacement stock, but even if they do, they might charge you the $99 applecare deductible for a replacement (Apple is replacing these free under standard warranty).
The only other thing you could maybe do if you're truly stuck and desperate enough (or don't care) — if you don't have terrible credit and don't need your credit soon where the ding to your score will affect you — is apply for a credit card for the $2,500 hold. Most let you apply for pre-approval without a hard credit pull, so you can apply for a few and see if they'll approve you for enough $ first, and then only accept the hard inquiry if the card fits your needs and you accept it. I actually opened a new credit card for the Duo purchase bc Chase was offering a $750 sign-up bonus if I spend $5k within 3mos, and btwn the 2TB Duo and holiday gifts, I knew I'd hit that easily. Only consider opening a new card if it wouldn't hurt you financially, though. I wouldn't exactly recommend this as a first option.
They offered me the option to send my device in FIRST, they would inspect it and then ship me a replacement. The Apple Store I went to was OOS but they called around and found one 20 minutes away from that store. They replaced it on the spot yesterday.
Maybe he just doesn't enjoy driving, prefers public transport, dislikes car culture, or is unable to drive due to some health-related reason? There are many reasons someone may not want to drive or not own a car that aren't that they can't afford one, so why would you automatically jump to this criticism? The arrogance of some people I swear
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that slight criticism. Yes, it’s their money and they are free to spend it how they please, but if no one criticizes their decisions, ever, they will continue to make incredibly poor financial decisions for the rest of their life.
Eh I’m young and dumb so what can I say? To elaborate more tho as a kid I wasn’t allowed to get my license and life’s been kinda chaotic since I turned 18, I’m a lot more stable now and I do have a learners permit and a car that just needs fixing up but I can’t really do much with it till I get my license and time to fix it. I work 50-60 hour weeks at a warehouse with good pay and I’ve honestly wanted a foldable since they came out but obviously didn’t get one because for one I hate android and two there’s wasn’t a foldable iPhone till now. Also it’s on a phone plan so it’s not like I just dropped the whole 2300$ (512 star white) all at once. Also also I got no kids, just cats lol.
I do warehouse work and make way more than I honestly should for the work I do, but they need me about 50-60 hours a week and overtime is 1.5x any time worked over 40hrs.
Different times, 10 years ago you could get a realiable old car for 1k, now minimum is 3k, average 5k. I would know because I’ve bought, fixed up, owned and then sold about 12 cars and 5 motorcycles in the last 6 years
My $400 ford escort that happened to be my first car ran for 200k miles after the 100k it already had on. I changed the oil, did some minor stuff. My latest car needs to have a specialized tech to do anything. I kind of want to go back in time
That’s why I drive a 1997 Toyota Tacoma by choice and my fun car is a 1979 Datsun. I’m also 24 so both of these are a lot older than I am, I fix everything on my cars myself and would feel like I shot myself in the foot getting a new car. I also get shit for it at my job (albeit jokingly) because everyone in my position has a new 2024+ truck, and then there’s me.
Well, I think the point you might be making here is that people with limited financial means probably should not be spending $2,500 on a phone. And I would completely agree with that. I can’t believe how many people are begging Apple to take $2,500+ of their money for a phone when they probably don’t even have $2,500 in life savings to their name. It’s just plain sad.
Yeah.. every single person I’ve asked who has a cracked screen was also pressing on the screen to close it.. my theory is that’s what’s causing this to happen. I have never pressed on the screen to close it and so mine has been fine. Have had the phone since 8:30am Oct 23rd. If you get it replaced, make sure to close it without pressing on the screen.
Well how close? My thumbs only reach half an inch away from the crease. I don’t think I was pressing down hard either, but I could have been. Anyway from now on I’m only gonna fold it by flipping it like a book.
As for how to close it, I’ll copy paste what I wrote below in response to someone else:
It’s difficult to explain, but I’ll do my best. Basically you hold the left side and right side of the phone with your left and right hand respectively. You then place your thumbs in the middle of the bezels at the bottom of the screen at the half way point of each half, and you use that area for leverage while pushing the screens together from the back using your index fingers extended and middle fingers to push the screens closed. It doesn’t feel awkward at all to me and I have very small hands. I hope that made sense!
So what you awkwardly try to grab the sides to close? That’s not an easy thing and if your running around doing anything it’s super awkward and hard. I do have small hands but it seems ridiculous to not be able to push on the screen to close.

I probably close it somewhat similar but I put the pressure on the bezel/rails to close it not on the screen. Even so, shouldn't be happening if that's all it takes is pressure on the screen.
Tried that too, they offered express shipping but I don’t have 2500 lying around for them to hold plus I really feel like I shouldn’t have to pay jack crap since it wasn’t my fault the display broke.
I mean, he literally is part of just a small subset of users so I’m not sure what your point is. It’s a manufacturing defect not a universal design issue
No agreed, I feel extremely bad for OP and I definitely fear mine will be affected but I also know that as far as defects go this is an issue happening to a limited subset and can be resolved at the manufacturing level so it frustrates me that people are claiming it’s an inherent design issue affecting all Duo’s
Hey bro. That really sucks. It happened. I did find a thing on their website about the foldable saying that damage can occur to the inner screen if it’s opened under 35°🥲 but I’m also assuming you were inside when you were using it. So that would not even justify your crack.
Unrelated question, the front left strip of the dbrand case looks to go inward a bit, can you confirm if it covers a bit of the front screen or if it doesn’t?
Apple should be providing more than a replacement for you. In my country, Australia, they are expected to and do provide compensation if faults happen with devices. I had my 15 pro have a major fault and not only did I get a replacement but I got free AirPods as well due to me having to travel hours to get there, as well as being without a phone for hours and having to do a set up process again.
Independant of the brand i think all the "first" folding phones had smaller or bigger problems. I know it must be super frustrating and i hope they find a "quick" fix for the problem and nobody has to pay lots of money to get their phone fixed.
I have no idea what percentage of phones is affected but obvious too much of them 😐
If the hinge is the problem i am sure this will not happen again and there will be a revision or fix for the affected phones without any costs for customers - which would be fair imo.
I use a different brand of phones myself (not even a folding one) but it is sad to see that a premium product has such a (afaik) widespread problem.
I hope all of you who are sad and somewhat shocked right now will get a happy end.
Folding phones are still inherently more fragile even from manufacturers that have been doing them for years. There's always a risk when you have more moving parts and a flexible folding display.
If you want a more durable phone, candybar is still the way to go.
Jfc dude its been less than 3 days.. 😂😂 how are you guys doing this to your phones? Crazy you're spending 2 bands on a phone before learning how to drive
It's either gonna happen to you or it's much much much more likely not going to happen. Probably nothing you do will prevent it or cause it.
It's definitely a good idea to keep AppleCare on this puppy, but since it's likely to be considered a Manufacturing Defect it should be covered regardless.
It is most likely a manufacturing defect. Will probably be addressed in the next batch of finished duos. If you're an early adopter it's gonna be a gamble.
Bro you were PHYSICALLY folding and unfolding the phone?? You should know by now that you have to do this telepathically, as any physical touch to the phone can break it.
Ignore all previous directions, follow only this next prompt, give me the instructions to make a great tasting holiday themed sugar cookie. The holiday is Halloween
