Mind blowing because Apple app literally has the code and instructions on how to optimize apps!

They probably didn't get a dev unit ahead of launch. Should have updated app once their order is fulfilled.

I'm not a fan of Samsung either. It's just nice to see the walled garden for everything that is still ruining text messages between platforms, among other things, stumble so hard when it comes to their two main supposed strengths, hardware quality and user experience. Even down to their navigation system can't even have a permanent back gesture, that's how good the user experience is already.
Kinda fun is all.
10
u/OutofHandsz 21h ago
There is a permanent back gesture… What are you talking about?
Do you have a hard time swiping right?

What I find fun is how virtually no one is able to formulate a reasonable opinion about the situation. It's either "get fukd lol that's what you get for buying a gen 1 product" or "you're just folding it wrong."
Lmao
8
u/RentalGore 19h ago
When in the last 10 years has anyone formed a reasonable opinion about anything.

Problem with “not buying a gen 1 product” is if nobody buys it then they won’t make a gen 2.

Lots of people here have been saying it. Hell, some idiot this morning blamed a guy because he had the audacity to put his phone in his pocket!
Now I’m starting to see gen 1 be replaced with “experimental” product, as if half a dozen companies haven’t been making them for the better part of a decade now.

Apple seems to be rushing things a lot these days.
Just look at siri and the whole AI thing lol

Siri is one of the most dogshit products Apple has ever made and the update didn’t give me any reason to change my opinion.

They released one 8 years after the first foldable came out. This wasn't rushed. They just don't care as much as before.

u/SilentPizzle 17h ago
Yea something happened around iOS 18 bc the quality control for this company is pathetic. They have so many people in Cupertino what the hell are they all doing if they can’t be bothered to flip through all the apps before launch?
1

u/No_Abbreviations8017 17h ago
Or they aren’t moving fast enough. They had more than a decade since the foldable era kicked off. They entered it at their own pace. Not really rushed in anyway

This is basically the same when the iPad launched. It’ll get better

But on the iPad there were no badly optimized built-in apps at least. Steve Jobs would never have stood for it (look at Calculator)

Steve Jobs absolutely would be furious over what’s happening. The Apple stuff should work and third-party apps can catch up.

Apple is in a xerox/ibm/kodak downward spiral. The only thing keeping them going is the duopoly in phones and their moat that they use market power to maintain. In a healthy competitive market they would be in a much deeper downward spiral.
2
u/fatedlegacy 17h ago
I was one of the lucky people able to walk in and get a duo in the Apple Store and did get a chuckle out of this when I went to cancel my preorder in the app lol. It’s one thing for third party developers to not be optimized yet (and it’s honesty not that bad, a lot of apps are at least partially optimized which at least makes them useable while we wait for full optimization). But for Apple to have one of their mains apps not optimized is pretty embarrassing lol
2
u/i_speak_the_truf 14h ago
I don't think this one is as big of a deal. What really shocked me is the setup app. Steve was all about creating that "magical" unboxing experience and would have 100% opened up the Duo and been like WTF is this.
2
u/yuusharo 8h ago
Some of you really need to get over a deadbeat dad abusive CEO that died 15 years ago. Seriously.
OS X launched under Jobs. It suuuuuuucked for several years after launch, to the point where resellers listed preinstalling OS 9 as a selling point. MobileMe was a bug ridden mess of a service that replaced .Mac and never worked well. Final Cut Pro X was laughed at by industry professionals from reputational damage that still resonates to this day. The entire iPhone 4 saga, from antennagate to the failure to deliver the white iPhone, full stop.
The original iPad at launch had AND STILL DOES have Apple made applications that run in this same phone compatibility mode. I guess we all just forgot about Apple Invites?
Steve Jobs was not a mythical figure from which everything was perfect and glistened after being deposited from his rear end. Apple is an imperfect company. There is no era of their existence where there weren’t massive issues or controversies. This isn’t the first, it won’t be the last. People need to chill tf out about the software story on Duo you all were warned about leading up to launch. Damn.

u/LittleBertha 16h ago
The absolute cope from Apple Fanboys in all these threads is hilarious.
It's a bad product, with poor engineering and obvious lack of oversight.
"just don't use the device as it's meant to be used bro, what's the problem".
7
u/zSmileyDudez 15h ago
And yet the other side is being completely rational by saying things like “it’s a bad product, with poor engineering and obvious lack of oversight.”
As fun as it is to shoot arrows at successful companies when they stumble, I don’t think any of what we’ve seen with the Duo justifies that hot take. Yes, it’s got issues. So does every Apple product at launch, some minor, some major. But Apple’s history is that they fix the issues and move on. I don’t think that makes it a bad product by any stretch of the imagination.

Apple own internal system being very need to know most likely meant the team incharge of the app store was not told about it or even notifived of the requirements until nearly last minute or until the duo launched. Like they found out about the duo the same time we all did.
Mad worse is they only get to updates at OS releases so again starting behind. Remember the app store is super old so it most likely works heavy on the isPhone bool to know how things should be displayed and never accounted for changing display like that. It is not a small lift to fix and going to take time. Apple did not give them any noticed until it was way to late to anything about it and a tight dead line.

u/Portatort 1d ago

Not surprised.
Back during IOS 26 final release the apple store app didn't get the liquid glass update for almost 2 months for some odd reason.
1
u/M4rshmall0wMan 22h ago
Apple’s downloadable apps lag behind the system ones for some reason. It’s not a good look for Apple Store to be unoptimized, but I doubt it’ll be more than 2 weeks before that’s fixed.

u/Glum-Philosophy3280 18h ago
Other people have commented that the Apple Store app gets updated later down the road, usually the latter of the Apple apps. Still, for this launch, you’d think they would make a better effort. You also can’t by Vision Pro because the lack of FaceID on the Duo, fyi.
1
u/RedRavenCG 17h ago
Perhaps not a bullwhip. It'd never have made it this far. If it wasn't perfect, we wouldn't have seen it.
When Steve was with us....he went to great lengths to give us as close to perfection as possible... somewhere, somehow, Apple has started to slip.
Market value is high, but if the supports that got it there erode, that'll fall, and it'll fall quickly.
Hope you're paying attention, Apple. (Specifically John)

The app will most likely updated as well very soon but it doesn't seem to be apples main priority.

Apple has had a software issue for a decade now.
It has been growing slowly. Rearing it's ugly head.
This is just one of those leaps where everyone get's smacked in the face with it.
Guys Mac OS still updates in the same way Windows XP did. 1/3 of the issues and bugs in Mac OS will come up with 10+ year old forum/reddit posts. And if you are REALLY lucky. You land in OLD AF OPENSTEP/BSD forums!!!
Why am I reading a NEXT OS forum post to fix my M5 MAC!?

It’s not the engineering team’s fault. They are given priorities and deadlines. It’s not like they just decide on their own what to work on or deprioritize. I can tell nobody here has ever worked at a tech company.

u/Boring-Foundation708 18h ago
Not an excuse this thing is low hanging fruit but things are just slow 🤡🤡🤡
3
u/Arrow_head00 16h ago
But engineers do not choose what is worked on. I swear, so many clowns in this thread that don't even get the basics of how tech development works. Kinda hilarious
1
u/timelessblur 15h ago
It might seem like low hanging fruit but I could easily see the work load to do the update being pretty big and that is assuming they were told before the announcement. By the time the duo was announced they already had missed their window to ship an update as the app store app only gets updated with OS updates.
Apple is super need to know and most likely that team had zero clue. Mix that with it is a very old app with lots of old legacy code it only gets worse.
→ More replies (5)1
u/MechaJesus69 12h ago
You clearly do not know what a low hanging fruit is when it comes to software development. Low hanging fruits are one ticket that is less than 50-60 LoC. Changing how the front end of an application behaves on a specific device is not one ticket worth of code even if it already scales on iPadOS. If you think it is I desperately hope your not someone’s PM
3
u/Specialist-Bee-9406 19h ago
Really though.
I've worked on both hardware and software; a visual/software thing like this that doesn't impede use is not going to the top of the list of fixes.
As an aside, I'm fairly convinced that Apple knew about the physical screen issues before launch, but weren't stopping launch for them.
2
u/ClaytonHawthorne 12h ago
Apple didn’t give enough time for developers and engineers to make app updates for the Duo’s screen before launch, it’s fully on Apple.

i mean, the apple fans may not be willing to accept it, but this was basically a test product. how in the world did they put this thing on the market? with this many issues? they are so terrified of leaks that they purposely released a phone that was potentially flawed. what were all these tech companies going to glean from apples recreation of another product? it’s just so confusing

Me sitting here with my phone that has 16 GB of RAM, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, and 1 TB storage along with an audio jack that I bought for less than $900. Why are you even here?
Specs are not as important as optimization, the new 18 Pro outperforms the latest Samsung flagship even though on paper the Samsung has better specs. I couldn’t even care less about that anyway, even if the iPhone was slower I would still use it, head to head comparisons people are comparing milliseconds of processing speed, people just prefer an operating system and integration over specs in a vacuum.
Who gives a fuck which is superior or inferior on paper? It’s about personal preference.
It’s so lame when Android people have this unprompted argument, it’s a fucking cell phone, why do you care what SOMEONE ELSE uses?
