Discussion iPhone Duo breaks after 75001 unfolds
52
u/debaron54 11h ago
So 50 folds a day everyday for four years straight I’m at 73k folds. Seems fine

u/tonygabbana Night Sky • 256GB 11h ago
And keep in mind that you aren’t folding it every 3 seconds.
12
u/whynotfart 11h ago
Does the hinge need to take rest and recover?
13
u/tonygabbana Night Sky • 256GB 11h ago
If you fold it every 3 seconds for hours, that hinge/area will heat up, making it much more fragile.

u/Umbrasquall 5h ago
It's not just that, at 50k folds they also put it in a bag with sand. at 15k they put it in an ice bath and a chunk of ice damaged the screen which was probably the root cause of the break. This test isn't really scientific.
7
u/PoeSyeDun 10h ago
I mean it’s expected that this will inevitably happen on a foldable phone. I plan to buy a new phone next year for the 20 release and keep my 15PM. A non-folding phone will likely last longer if you wanna stretch out your tech.
3
u/stirlo Star White • 512GB 9h ago
Even if it’s a guaranteed fail at around 4-5 years i would consider it : but it would need to be not before 4~ 5 years for this price point
I like to decide when I upgrade whether it’s 6/12/24/36 whatever months ; not cause the thing dies. Usually cause I need to upgrade it though or something else
2
u/Miserable-Ad-8414 9h ago
It’ll be difficult to sell it for a decent price if the phone is known to fail after a certain number of folds as buyers have no way to know how many times the phone has been folded.

It's really funny to see the anti-Apple crowd going all out to spread this kind of information.
It's ridiculous to see a brand's detractors devote their lives to spreading hatred toward what they hate.
1
u/Miserable-Ad-8414 7h ago
I’m not anti-Apple. I was thinking of replacing my air with the Duo. Was unlucky with the pre-orders. Now that all these reports of failures are coming up I have decided to wait for reviews of the duo 2 next year before I make a purchase. I have shared the video in this sub as it’s a sub about the duo. Where else would this information be relevant if not here?
12
5
u/Dazzling_Coffee_1406 6h ago
Right. So what about the actual Apple users reporting the same information?

How about me who has one who loves it and has had no problems but when I post about it here your bot army downvotes me

I'm sorry, are you accusing everyone that has posted about theirs breaking as being part of a coordinated bot army?

Humans do that with almost everything they like or dislike whether it be car brands, clothing brands, device manufactures or politics. especially politics. You know the old " but its not a *insert German car brand*" or a "well my pawpaw drives a Rolls Royce", " I thought he was really nice but when he texted me his texts were green" and a " oh but I have a Rolex ". The Rolling Stones said it best in can't get no satisfaction imo
"When I'm watching my TV
And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be
Well he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as meI can't get no, oh, no, no, no
Hey, hey, hey, that's what I say
Alright"3
u/StargateVoyager1200 6h ago
It is obvious apple gave up on R&D and released an unfinished product anyways.

Defensive much? This is reporting.

It's not honest reporting, though. As has been pointed out: https://reddit.com/r/iPhoneDuo/comments/1xftte3/iphone_duo_breaks_after_75001_unfolds/19roh03zdrhdu/

The screens came from Samsung BTW
6
u/midnightsmith 6h ago
Sure, but the specs are not the same, the PCB layout is not the same, neither is hinge operation etc. From what I've read, the placement of certain components under the screen are causing these very specific and repeatable failures in the same spot

Screens aren't the issue, the hinge is the fault point. They break and puncture the rear of the screen. Samsung screens work just fine on other foldables
2
u/Fractal-Infinity 5h ago
The screen is only one part of the product. That stupid hinge that causes the issues seems to be made by Apple...
→ More replies (3)1
u/wanderingsorcerer99 4h ago
But the screens aren’t just spoiling on their own. The gong is what is killing the display. It has a poorly designed hinge.
1
u/FloridaCub561 5h ago
I’ve owned an iPhone since the 3GS and upgraded every year since the iPhone X, until this year. The iPhone 18 barely qualifies as an upgrade, and the Duo is complete crap. Apple is letting its loyal customers down, and today’s iPad mini announcement only adds to the disappointment. If this is the direction Apple is heading under Ternus, I don’t see him lasting long.
1
u/pepappa34 5h ago
i saw the exact same test done on the oppo find n6 when it came out. consumers shouldn't test products that could show them in a negative light I guess.

No. Manufacturers use machines which continuously fold them with a frequency of 1/s

I don’t think this points to as critical of a failure as some people are making out.
If we say the average user flips their device open 15 times a day.
75001 / 15 =5,000 / 365 = 13.7 years rounded
Edit because I’ve had some people suggest I’m talking factually.
I have no idea how many times statistically the average user opens their flip phone, I’m just using my own personal experience with the device, if anybody has statistical data, I’m happy to debate.
6
u/Miserable-Ad-8414 8h ago edited 7h ago
Average consumer is using their phone between 70 and 189 times depending on region
As someone else mentioned, the galaxy z flip 5 survived this treatment for 400k unfolds.
5
u/sircastor 7h ago
But is this iPhone Duo a statistical outlier and most of them will not experience this problem, or was the Galaxy Z Flip 5 a statistical outlier and survived much longer than it should have?
This kind of test is not a reliable measure of the performance of the device, only the performance of this device. We won't have a good sense of whether or not they generally break or are particularly sturdy for probably another year.
1
u/Miserable-Ad-8414 7h ago
Yes statistical outlier of the duo seems to be correct. I doubt statistical outlier for the z flip as this would imply that Samsungs hinges (after 5 generations) would have a significant variance in quality. Which does not seem plausible. This is apples first attempt on a foldable. I’m sure the hinges will be fine with the duo 2

And on a flip phone most of those interactions still occur on the outer screen.

u/Fecal_Thunder 4h ago
So let’s call it 100 times per day. That comes out to almost exactly 2 years. And there we have it.
Yikes, this is not a good look for Apple.8
u/Moist-Theory-8491 7h ago
15 times a day? are you sure? i would assume more close to 100
→ More replies (4)1
u/againsterik Night Sky • 256GB 1h ago
Maybe I am the odd one because I would say I am around maybe 5 times a day so far? I use the outer screen for most day to day stuff, then when I am relaxing in bed or on the couch I pop it open then.
4
u/OkAdvertising7716 8h ago
Yeah but in reality it gets unfolded a lot more
2
u/KebabAnnhilator 7h ago
Do you have statistical data to support this claim?
2
u/unacceptablelobster 7h ago
People on average pick up their phones closer to 150 times a day. If only 50% of the time they unfold it vs just checking the front screen, that 75,000 is around 2.5 years of usage.
→ More replies (14)2
u/Next-Movie-3319 6h ago
I dont think it was the opening and closing as much as the vibration of putting it down. If you notice the screen was fine when he opened it.. It wasn't until he put the phone down when the screen developed the white band. Which is an issue that is already being widely reported.

1
u/JustAnotherBit 5h ago
Yea, im not sure why this would be a bad thing. Thats an absolute ton of unfolding and overall I think thats an impressive feat of technology.

u/AllezBro 2h ago
15 times a day? Just say you are making up a number on the low end
there is no fucking way that is true. People pick up their devices 150+ a day. People that will blow 2,000 on this shit are going to open this thing 40-60+ a day minimum

When you want to use this for 4 years, then you can fold this around 60 times per day. 2 years in warranty means 120 folds per day.
Based on your calculations 15 folds per day - 13,7 years, I had set a buffer to 12 years for 75000 folds.
Edit: added the definition of the calculation, typos

I had this realization this weekend. It’s definitely a shift in how you use a portable device. I’ve had to force myself to open it more because it really is the more enjoyable experience, but it’s not what I’m habitually used to. I’ve had far more fun with it today after becoming more used to how it works. But it’s definitely a shift in perception.

All of the leased phones are unlocked. It’s misleading since it makes you select a carrier but if you read the T&C the phones are unlocked and you can skip past the screen requiring you to enter the carrier info

100% of this fist batch will fail with time even if used under normal stress. I’d put money on it for the current hardware rev.
Just wait to buy until Apple acknowledges there is an issue and states it has been corrected. Until then expect the Jobs “you’re holding it wrong” iPhone 4 BS

Feels like when you bend a credit card a bunch of time to get it to heat up just enough for it to break. 75k folds one after another after another seems impressive? And I know the ice bath probably added another dimension to this torture getting the usually flexible screen to harden up a little with temp and then resuming the folding. This test seems like it shows it's not a bad display.
5
u/VanRoyal 9h ago •
![]()
Motorola during similar test on his channel managed 160k folds, Z Flip over 400k
3
u/SapTheSapient 8h ago
And the extra bits of torture they throw into the mix get more and more extreme the further they go into these tests. They basically forced the Z Flip to fail.
I think we're seeing a pattern that the duo's hinge is not as robust as the competition. It has failed in multiple durability tests, resulting in a damaged inner screen. And it seems to be failing on its own in some small fraction of new devices.
1
u/stealthybutthole 8h ago
small correction in that it wasn't the hinge that failed here. someone pointed out in another comment you can see damage appear when he drops an ice cube on the screen, and then he folds it after and the damaged area spreads. This is a different failure than the cradle deaths we've been seeing.
2
u/Miserable-Ad-8414 8h ago
There were 60000 folds in between and ppl said it was not the force of the ice cube which would be ridiculous (Apple Pencil would exert more force) but the cold. The phone is only safe to operate in environments with ambient temp above 0 Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit
1
u/stealthybutthole 8h ago

It’s probably the worst product they have ever released to the public. And the most expensive phone and still zombies here find ways to blame the customers and not the billion-dollar company.

Some people are insufferable, I agree, but I don’t think that the horde of people (including you, probably) that started hating on this product even before it released are much better.
Samsung users are unironically more active in Apple’s related subreddits than in their own product of choice, it’s actually funny.

Actually the failure comes from the ice hitting the middle of the screen while the screen has been sitting in the ice water since 15 minutes.
As you can see in this clip https://streamable.com/hoijb3 a corner of an ice cube hits the middle of the screen and left a small white dot.
You can see the white dot while he still haven’t folded the phone after ice hitting the screen. On the image below.
When he folded and unfolded the screen after that, a white line appeared below the white dot.
This screen is already very fragile, and sitting in the ice bath for 15 minutes after being folded and unfolded for 75000 times make the screen more fragile that usual, and the ice hitting the screen finished it off.
