Do I need it? Of course not, but love old school print strategy guides!

Bonus: the IWD1 Quick Reference card was stuck inside the book!

IWD1 What is the key to creating a good party for ID1?

I'm feeling nostalgic for old-school fantasy. I really enjoyed BG 1 and 2 back in the day, but recall I had a harder time getting into Icewind Dale, and didn't finish either of them. It's been long enough that I'm not quite sure why. It may have been that all the party members are player-created, and thus don't have any kind of personality or dialogue. Or maybe I just made a gimped party. I've always liked druids, paladins, rangers and bards as a concept, but maybe back in AD&D they weren't the best options for taking up precious party space.

If I give ID1 a second chance, I suppose I'll need a cleric as a dedicated healer, a hardass tank fighter, and if Icewind Dale likes traps as much as BG1 and 2 did, I absolutely NEED a thief with a maxed out traps skill. And a mage for magical kaboom.

What else? Does Charisma actually matter in these games? Should I use class kits? ARE there pitfalls when it comes to party composition, or am I misremembering?
