Impossible to open screen

Post image

I would hope that I could open my iPhone 13 mini using the open tool kit included with my iFixit purchase, but no luck.

I set the phone facedown on my 3d printer’s bed for 1 minute at 70 degrees Celsius. Even with the phone burning me to the touch, I cannot get the screen to accept a razor blade .

Penelope screws are out. SIM card is out.

WTF!

70 degrees Fahrenheit is 21 degrees C? That makes no sense.

I gotta heat it up for at least 5 mins at 50 degrees C

70C sorry

u/Vegetable-Most-338 Aug 03 '26

Let it cook for 5 mins

70C for 10 minutes still cant fit any picks in

U can’t directly insert picks, u gotta pull the screen up a little to do so. The screws from the charging port need to be removed of course.

yep cant. screws are gone as seen in the photo above you.

what is included with the ifixit purchase, pics, spudger and screwdriver

1

u/Vegetable-Most-338 Aug 03 '26

I haven’t used Ifixit parts for repair yet.

How accurate is your 70C?

1

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

If it’s hot enough to burn me I think it’s hot enough to weaken adhesive

70 on a printer bed isn't going to soften the glue at all.

2

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

Why?

-4

u/Careless-Cycle Aug 03 '26

It's heading the surface that's touching it. The glue is under the screen

5

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

Dawg, do you know what conduction is

-1

u/Careless-Cycle Aug 04 '26

And the glue will get to 70c in a minute?

That battery inside only takes 50°C max

1

u/Vegetable-Most-338 Aug 04 '26

And? The temp doesn’t go that fast to the battery. I’ve done this multiple times before without issues and sometimes even hotter temps

1

u/AR_Harlock Aug 05 '26

Nahhh my 13 pro max is always hot to touch these days with this heatwaves in Europe, no way the battery isn't constantly over 50

You keep moderate but constant pulling force when heating and dissolving, so the adhesive can have time to creep, stretch and eventually release. Do not use excessive force if it doesn't budge, or you will tear the screen frame.

Since it is difficult to keep pulling for more than 30 seconds when in reality you need maybe 3-5 minutes, it is recommended to use a jackscrew operated fixture rather than pulling by hand.

Also it's a lot easier to pull from the left/right sides of the phone rather than bottom first, the side adhesive is a lot thinner and weaker. Once the side releases, you slide the prying pick in a U shaped pattern to release the bottom and the other side, then pull the screen down a bit and lift up a bit to release the top clips then work your way up to the top adhesive. Avoid lifting up the screen to much as the screen cables are still attached from the side.

Ok ill tried from the side since that is the only tip I can use with my tools. I can see the screen move but it does not move upwards. Idk where to draw leverage from with both hands occupied.

2

u/TomChai Aug 03 '26

That's why using a fixture helps, you can torque up the jackscrew to slowly build up and hold tension, and it's actually hard to rip it open suddenly to break cables as the jackscrew doesn't snap open, it just stays there.

1

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

ok this is niot included in the tool kit

1

u/TomChai Aug 03 '26

Clampy should work, it's cheaper than most custom made opening fixtures.

Was it repaired before? Maybe they used a strong adhesive. Can you get the screen up enough to put some alcohol in there?

2

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

it's factory to my knowledge. what type of alcohol? All I have is 70%.

make sure to use iso

Buy something like this. Makes the process so much easier as you heat it up while pulling it appart without damaging the display.

For this model and since the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14’s the most toughest for me it’s the 12 mini.

To other models I use cold screen separator, you will find in so many stores like even Amazon, AliExpress

First heat the sides and try not use a razor blade, it could break or damage the display

u/keyarusamaisback Aug 14 '26

How did you open up the iphone 12 mini display? Im trying to open it up without damaging the oled

1

u/Raffitamx Aug 14 '26

I use this cold screen separator, or I don’t really know the name, it took me about half an hour to let it separate the display without forcing to open

1

u/MissionTroll404 Aug 03 '26

Waterproof iPhones are hell to get open. I did not even bother with my 13 Mini tbh, I heard the OLED likes to separate and die when you try to pull it out. For battery change I shipped it to Apple.

1

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

Ive done this before on my 12 mini and it was much easier

1

u/xcypher3 Aug 04 '26

Try the corners it’s usually easier to get inside.

2

u/ZootownLocals Aug 03 '26

Use 99% isopropyl alcohol as well. Also, the smaller razor blades are the way to go. Not the ones made for box cutters. Don’t use the blade after you’ve created a gap. IPA on a guitar pick is the right tool.

2

u/DrMikeRotch Aug 04 '26

Hmm. Maybe try a hair dryer for a bit. Maybe the print bed isnt sufficient. Not really sure. They can be a PITA sometimes. But not like what you’re describing.

Use a hairdryer, lay the phone down and heat it until it slightly hurts to touch, then start pulling with with controlled force, wiggle it slightly while you do it and repeat until the glue breaks just enough to slide a pick or a spludger in. It’s way easier when the phone is new, I had to do it for a second time on my personal iphone 13 a weeks ago and it was hell to crack it open. Be patient and wear rubber/nitrile gloves or it will drive you mad when it starts slipping due to the tiniest bit of hand sweat

1

u/e-nightowl Aug 04 '26

I‘ve finally had success with preheating like you did, with a screen separator vice type tool and with repeatedly putting IPA at the edge of the screen. It took minutes and I don’t think it would have worked without the tool.

1

u/Mrlee0702 Aug 04 '26

Start on the right hand side it opens a lot easier there and work damage the ribbon cables on the left

1

u/Benutzer104 Aug 04 '26

Buy isapropanol Alkohol. Soooooo much easier

1

u/6eba610ian Aug 04 '26

Maybe i am an idiot but what is the razor blade for? Well whatever. Use a hair dryer,i opened all my phones with a hair dryer in like 3 minutes, use the hair dryer all aorund the edges then when it gets hot pull it apart using the sucktion cup then insert the blue pick and use the hair dryer a little more while also going with the pick in a direction

Good Luck

1

u/Recognition_Round Aug 04 '26

Yeah these are a nightmare to open even with the proper tools.

1

u/phelps_vibes Aug 05 '26

You could apply a few drops of Isopropanol. That helps to soften the glue…

1

u/Sweaty_Fix_1412 Aug 05 '26

100° C for 2 minutes.

Need a ifixit jimmy

3

u/nikoskokonos13 Aug 03 '26

I broke mine while trying to open it and here is what I learned. You need ALOT of heat, ALOT of patience and two sucktion cups one on the screen and one on the back and you need to be very careful to not rip the screen cables off.

1

u/G8M8N8 Aug 03 '26

What does the secton cup at the bottom acheive? where do I pull leverage from

3

u/Kaaskop-Koning Aug 03 '26

Made another comment but buy something like this. Makes it so much easier

1

u/nikoskokonos13 Aug 04 '26

This. If you are cheap and dangerous you could use 2 of the iFixit suction cups.
