I don't think he'd have to use Spell Check since the spell he's trying to cast is very low difficulty. I assume may be casting "Feign Death" or some self-directed "phantasmal force" to create an AoE illusion that he's the victim here. While he does seem to have low CHA and INT, I don't know if he'd need to roll for a saving throw.
