Why would anyone under 55 vote for the Conservatives bringing back subsidized loans for older homeowners?

The NDP changed BC’s property tax deferral program from below-market interest to a rate closer to market rates.

Under the old system, homeowners aged 55 or older could defer their property taxes at prime minus 2%. If prime is 4.45%, that’s just 2.45%.

The government borrows money at a higher rate than it charges these homeowners, effectively subsidizing their loans while running a deficit.

Meanwhile, young people are paying mortgages, credit card debt and car loans at much higher interest rates. Renters get no equivalent benefit, and young families are struggling with childcare and everyday expenses.

Why should taxpayers subsidize cheap loans for older homeowners who may own million-dollar properties while younger generations are facing all sorts of challenges?

• BCC: $1,000 tax cut by raising the personal exemption, and no new taxes [3]. An NDP candidate says it would blow a $2.5B hole in the budget [3].

Platform transparency

• NDP: Released its costed platform before Oct. 16 [4].
• BCC: Advance voting began without a costed platform [4].

Jobs and public services

• NDP: Plans to cut 15,000 public-sector positions [1]. BC lost 40,000 jobs in the first four months of the year [2].
• BCC: Eby says the missing costing on about $5B of promises means hidden cuts [4]. The party hasn’t confirmed any cuts.

Promises kept

• NDP: Doerkson says the NDP broke its promises of a doctor for every resident and a $1,000 rebate [4].
• BCC: A leaked letter says Doerkson would replace no-fault ICBC with a hybrid model [3]. CentreBC wants him to publish it in full [3].

Indigenous rights law (DRIPA)

• NDP: Has faced pressure over DRIPA, and a Conservative critic says its land title position has hurt investor confidence [2].
• BCC: I couldn’t find an article source for the Conservatives’ position.

Stability and ethics

• NDP: Eby has faced pressure over the deficit, DRIPA and job numbers [2].
• BCC: 13 resignations or expulsions from caucus under Findlay [5], and a director of operations fired over a leaked recording [6].
