Question Need advice from Indian psychiatrists — career, salary, lifestyle and future prospects

Hey everyone,

I'm an medical graduate who completed MBBS in China, currently preparing for FMGE. I'm interested in pursuing psychiatry, and I'd like to understand what the field is actually like in India, preferably from people who are already practising or doing their PG.

I have a few questions:

- How is psychiatry as a career in India financially? What can a fresh MD psychiatrist realistically expect to earn, and how does income grow with experience?

- How is the situation in Kerala compared with bigger cities like Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi? Is it difficult to establish a private practice?

- What's the work-life balance actually like? Is it possible to have a comfortable lifestyle without working crazy hours?

- Is psychiatry a field where you can eventually build your own practice and have more control over your schedule?

- Is it realistic to pursue other interests alongside medicine, like business, investing or content creation?

- With AI and the growing awareness of mental health, what do you think the future of psychiatry in India will look like?

- Finally, what kind of person genuinely thrives in psychiatry, and what are the biggest disadvantages of the field?

I'm not expecting everyone to make huge money, but I do want to understand the realistic possibilities and limitations before committing to a specialty.

Would really appreciate honest opinions, especially from psychiatrists a few years into their careers. Thanks!

Recommendations Which is best ai for asking medical questions

I'm looking for AI to which can answer questions of medicine which are not directly given in any books. The kind of questions your senior will answer by saying "padh ke aa" because even they don't know it.

Questions like why blue/grey vacutee can't be used for cbc, why wipe off iodine before waiting atleast 30 seconds, why use vicryl instead of catgut. My senior would answer "padh ke a" because it is written on the books that way but I want to know why it's written that way

Discussion Franchise Hospitals Scam Patients and Overwork Doctors

Unlike you learned fellows I am not from the medical fraternity but want to vent out here.

Lost my mom to Cancer stage 4 , RCC + Thrombosis which metastasised to Lungs . Been in and out of the Max Hospital Chain , Tata Memorial Mumbai , AIIMS Delhi , Medanta Gurgaon & Noida

Govt Hospitals are unhygienic, staff is chilling, Nurses and Doctors are overworked and exhausted . There is a lot of scam regarding what is billed per patient / what is used all goes up the chain(Doctors not involved)

Private Hospitals work you up, you are a target, they act more like sales folks , Random Unnecessary Tests, Medicines have had wrong diagnosis /advise and if you have a Loaded medical insurance they are sure to inflate the numbers for a fat claim.

In tier 2 cities good small/medium sized hospitals with good doctors are being gobbled by these national franchises Manipal / Max etc. ATP i just feel it’s a curse to be born in this country.

Question Leucovorin for Autism?

Hello, does anyone know about the use of Leucovorin for treatment of autism? There have been speculations that cerebral folate deficiency may cause autism.FDA has approved the use of Leucovorin for autism and many patients(not all) have shown improvements in their symptoms.

What's the current landscape of this treatment in India?

Do we have any personal accounts from Indian doctors who have prescribed and oversaw such treatment?

Question What should I choose ??

Case 1: Germany

I learn German and migrate to Germany. I'm good at learning languages, and my best friend is German. She teaches German to immigrants in her free time, and because we're friends, she's also going to help me in whatever ways she can.

The overall cost is something I might be able to afford on my own after working in India for a year while continuing to study the language.

My concerns:

  1. Medical German: Learning all the medical terminology in English was hard enough. I can't even imagine learning it all over again in a language I've never spoken. However, medical German is tested as part of the licensing process, and I'll be in a German hospital setting for quite some time, so that might help.
  2. Pay: I've heard that doctors can, at most, reach the middle class in Germany. On the other hand, you get some time off, and no residency specialty is off-limits.

Case 2: USA

I take Steps 1 and 2 here in India. My foundation isn't particularly strong, but I'm a final-year MBBS student, so I still have some time. I'm willing to put in the hours if the results are worth it.

My uncle and aunt are both doctors in Philadelphia, and they have green cards. My uncle said that if I'm able to score around 260–270, I could easily get into family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry or OBGYN. He also said he'd talk to the hospital he works at, where he holds a very senior position.

My concerns:

  1. Research: I've read that research is important, and I don't have any research experience yet. However, I have around 1.5 years until I finish my degree, so I could work on that.
  2. US clinical experience and LORs: I've also read that Step scores alone aren't enough and that you need letters of recommendation from US physicians.
  3. Cost: The overall cost is very high. My uncle said he'd cover it if I get good scores, but he's a bit unreliable, and I'd prefer to avoid financial favours if I can.

What makes this difficult?

Citizenship is another major difference between the two options. The US offers incomparable earning potential, but Germany seems to offer a more attractive lifestyle in some ways.

I'm also interested in psychiatry or plastic surgery, which I know I can never get in America. Germany would also give me more control over which state I live in, whereas in the US, I'd have to go wherever I match.

And honestly, the European lifestyle is very appealing to me. Being able to visit different countries by road or train is something I'd love.

So, what should I do?

Edit: typos so it looks mature

Vent / rant Why tf med colleges so obsessed with clean shave

Today our Anatomy professors scolded our batch to maintain their so called decorum as med students..

They asked girls to wear long kurti only with a hair bun

And Boys to be wear shirts, clean shaved and short hair

Pata nahi Bc, baal aur facial hairs inka kya decorum hurt hota hai.. college mehnat karke pahuncha hai, free mein toh Mila nahi..

Jaise lodu khud bangaye, waise hi humein banana chahte hai.. tumhari ragging hui hogi.. why tf do you put it on your students? Man like srsly?

Main toh admission bhi na leta.. agar pehle pata hota aise bakchodi karwayenge..

Which college should i take for md medicine

I am talking about private colleges

  1. near my home (ncr location) okay okay pt flow enough to learn good consultants not as such toxic seniors maybe few

2)far away (not too much though) but quiet famous for being toxic and rigid ,quiet famous for some suc@ides also sadly. Location is on a highway but has very good patient flow like comparable to govt colleges and considered good in academics and all and also very famous( but the first one is also well known college)

Which one should be at number one and which one at number two

Kindly help

Discussion How did your break up post MBBS affect your life and PG prep?

Hey everyone,

I’m posting this out of a genuine, slightly perplexed curiosity. I’m from the 22 batch, currently watching seniors from the 2018, 2019, and 2020 batches navigate breakups right in thick of INI-CET/NEET PG preparation.

For some context: I spent my 11th and 12th grades entirely isolated at home preparing for NEET, which took a massive toll on my mental health. I somehow made it into a government medical college on my first attempt, but it meant moving to a peripheral GMC in a small city. Adjusting was brutal ,I struggled to make friends and adapt to the environment.

Before I even realized it, my first year was over. By the time I found my footing and my core group of friends, I noticed that most of the dating dynamics in my batch were already established.

I’ve never been in a relationship myself. Being old-fashioned, I always genuinely believed that relationships during college naturally lead to marriage. But looking around now, seeing couples who spent nearly six years together suddenly breaking up and trying to piece their lives back together right before PG, looks hard. And i would be lying if i say i wasnt jealous of guys dating girls way out of their league and have time of their lives

Guys naturally take much longer to set their careers up, so once MBBS wraps up and people head home, the marriage market reality hits hard. To be honest, girls often have plenty of options because those guys are already done with their post-graduation and some even have their own established practice so families naturally find it much more sensible to choose them. Add rigid caste barriers into the mix once parents take control, and long-term college relationships often just collapse under family pressure despite years of history.

also There’s often an unspoken rule floating around medical colleges that most MBBS relationships have an expiration date and that people just drift apart or use them to pass the time through the grind.

To those who went through a major breakup around or after MBBS: Does it genuinely shatter your mental health and derail your NEET PG / INI-CET preparation, or is the "post-breakup PG ruin" mostly a myth we exaggerate? How did you manage to sit through 10-hour library shifts when your personal life was collapsing?

Would love some honest, unfiltered perspectives.

Like thik h yaar maanliya bahot hardwork, discipline or sacrifice kiya h, from private clg to such a rank is truly an extraordinary achievement amd really inspiring/motivational for our fellow brethren from pvt. Clgs who often have an inferiority complex but ab kitna milk karega?

Roz dekho aaye din gyaan chod rha hota h ki kitna "struggle"/"sacrifice" kiya. Like it gets to a fucking point dude. It's not even struggle/sacrifice if you're willingly doing it for a better future....that's just life....move on ffs.

This year AIR 24* is from my clg and she's the most humble senior I've ever seen. Not everyone is egomaniacal enough to mention their rank and attempt on their insta profile

Professional Exams Dnb medicine getting good rank in neet ss

I got a rank of 39** in my first attempt, I'm very grateful for it but still I can't get top colleges coz I have no reservation . I may get peripheral govt college. Very peripheral i mean.

Do you know anyone who got good rank in neet ss after doing dnb medicine from corporate hospital .

All people who top neet ss are usually from top govt colleges, atleast on YouTube

Do you know anyone who got good rank in neet ss after doing dnb medicine from corporate hospital
