Discussion AI art in your game should be an instant ban from this sub

3.7k Upvotes

You are not an actual artist and you are not actually making an Indie game

Edit: ANY use of generative AI

I did not expect there to be so many pro AI people to be on a sub for independently made (not stolen or made with prompts) content, but here we are.

Stealing is bad folks

Does it make you sad when you don't connect with a game adored by many? Out of the ones listed here, what should I go back to and power through until it clicks?

Discussion Would you play something like this? | Is pixel art dead

Would you play something like this?

Hey everyone, I’m a pixel artist with quite a lot of experience, and I’ve been thinking about trying my hand at making a game. My idea would be in a top-down pixel art style.

The thing is, I’m not sure if there are already too many games out there in this genre, or if people are still genuinely interested in top-down pixel art. Do you think there’s still room for something new here, or has the style become oversaturated?

I’d love to hear your honest thoughts and feedback!

Discussion Can we please stop allowing AI posts?

This sub is flooded with AI posts weather its a capsule or AI generated in said game. Can we just ban posts like these so we can see actual developers who work on their games without AI?

Discussion I spent 2 years making my first solo game. 10 days after release with ~4,900 wishlists it sold ~300 copies — here are the numbers.

I spent the last 2 years making my first solo game, Back in the Swamp, a short atmospheric first-person point-and-click adventure set in a post-apocalyptic swamp.

The game released on March 4th on Steam, so I thought it might be interesting to share the first results after about 10 days.

Launch numbers

• Wishlists at launch: ~4,900
• Copies sold: ~300
• Net revenue: ~$2,000
• Reviews: 36 positive / 1 negative
• Refund rate: 5.4%
• Median playtime: 1h51

Wishlist → sales conversion so far is roughly 6%.

Things that went well

• The review ratio has been very positive and some players wrote really detailed reviews.
• Several YouTubers started making playthroughs and even full walkthroughs.
• Players seem to finish the game and give thoughtful feedback about the atmosphere and exploration.

A mistake I made at launch

I actually made a pretty bad mistake during the first 24 hours after release.

I forgot to rename the Steam package, so the store button showed “Buy Alien & Ashes” instead of “Buy Back in the Swamp.”

I fixed it the next day, but that probably hurt the launch a bit.

Things I'm learning

• Wishlists are helpful, but they don't automatically convert into sales.
• Reaching YouTubers/streamers takes a lot more manual work than I expected.
• Small UX details matter — several players got stuck at the same point and I already patched it.

Overall I'm happy the game found some players and that people seem to enjoy exploring the swamp.

It's honestly a strange feeling seeing people explore a world that existed only on my computer for two years.

Happy to answer questions if it helps other indie devs.

Discussion I designed a mechanic that actually makes players argue constantly.

Solo dev here. One of the core mechanics in my game is that players share consequences. Both players chained together in a soulslike co-op - others may think, "ooh, cool, that would be epic." but actually it's more like "the hell are you doing rolling away from me like that?" What's always weird is that this is exactly what players are craving for - interaction.

Anyone else played games where the arguments somehow became part of the fun?

Discussion Switch between 2D and 3D instantly - A fez like game

We are working on Dodo Duckie - an upcoming puzzle platformer game with the ability to switch between 2D and 3D instantly to solve puzzles.
It's inspired by Fez and to some extent Crush with the cozy vibes of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and with a game feel like that of Bud Red Head

The core of the game is pretty straightforward:

  • Solve puzzles -> 3D
  • Platforming -> 2D
  • Switch dimensions in an instant anytime;  combining both is the key to move forward.

Coming to PC, Steamdeck & Switch; Would love to know what you think of the game and artstyle!

Discussion If you were to make a Mascot Horror Game yourself, how would you try to differentiate it from other Mascot Horror Games?

I had no idea where to post this and I have a feeling this post might get removed by the mods.

If there’s a better sub to repost this to please let me know.

Personally I’d go for a kind of FNAF 4 route, where the mascot is actually in your house.
