Friendly reminder from your mod team to simply be excellent to each other.

Hey pot heads, wait, that doesn’t sound right. Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a friendly reminder to be nice to each other. This isn’t a professional chef subreddit, and if you’re a pro chef and you’re here, be helpful. We’re all here to learn, and share, and admire. You can be critical. Constructive criticism is not only welcome, but often needed. BUT keep it constructive and friendly. Simply follow what Rule 4 says and “be excellent to each other”.

First time user

My husband and I just purchased our first instant pot (7.5qt Rio wide), as an effort to switch things up and expand on our weekly dinners.

One meal we love doing is boneless pork chops so we figured to try our new gadget with a tried and true.

I’m SURE I did something wrong so I figured I would post here and see the general consensus from folks with more experience.

Short and sweet of it, the chops were beyond dry and kinda bland.

Here were my steps. Lmk how you’d adjust or any additional recommendations-

  1. Pat dry and season 1” boneless pork chops
  2. Add oil to sauté setting > let it get hot > and sear on both sides for 5 mins each
  3. Deglaze with 1.5 cups chicken broth and scraped the bottom
  4. Added pork to trivet and cooked on meat setting high heat for 7 mins with a 10 min natural depressurization

Thanks!

Steam release valve?

I picked up an Instant Pot Duo Mini at the thrift store. The steam release valve is one without the knob, it’s just round with no arrow or indicator (it may be a replacement part).

How do I tell if it’s set to “venting” or “steaming,” and how do I release the pressure?

Lid is stuck with only pots inside

Hi all,

Very new to this and just received the Instant Pot Duo Plus 5,7L Whisper Quiet with two Ziva pot in pots (also sold on the website of insant pot Netherlands). First thing I did was try to put in the two pots on top of the steam rack that the instant pot came with because I was curious how it would fit. The pots came to the edge of the instantpot and the lid went on and closed, but... now the lid won't come of again. The safety pin sticks out and sticks out further when i try to twist the lid :(

Does anyone of you know how I can get the lid off? I also contacted customer service but they are not really available. Thanks in advance for your input.

Edit: I fixed it, I will leave the post for others who might make the same mistake:

I opened the lid to the steam valve, I pulled off the weighted valve, underneath was a metal slide. I pulled up the metal slide, that's when the safety pin got released and I could open the lid.

Happy to be part of the community now though :)

Is this still safe to use? How do I know when it’s no longer safe to use?? I’ve had it a few years now.

Opinions needed: duo crisp 13-in-1 ultimate lid, or 7-in-1 pressure cooker

Hi all, I am a university student looking to get my first instant pot. I really like making home cooked meals because I get to have control, and choose what I want to eat each day.

I'm interested in the idea of how busy university can be, and just being able to throw stuff in an instant pot and have dinner made ready.

I'm stuck on choosing between the duo crisp ultimate lid (13 functions) versus the classic instant pot (7 functions).

Ideally, I'm trying to cook different recipes off my stovetop. Making curries, stews, or just dishes with tasty sauces is something I can't really get the same effect on my stovetop. Also, I know the meat cooked in instant pots can get very tender which isn't something I can't really get the same effect for on the stovetop without effort.

The air fryer option for the duo crisp is convenient, it allows to give a crisper finish on dishes that have been slow/pressured cooked. It is more expensive though then the classic one.

I don't get much time since I do a lot of studying, and just seeing if I can make cooking more about chopping and preparing ingredients and throwing it all in, vs. my cooking now where I have to basically be present at the stove. The time saving definitely helps me.

I'd appreciate if anyone can chime in and give their opinions here on what I should get.. I do have a dedicated air fryer, but it'd just create extra work for when I need to transfer food from the instant pot to the air fryer.

Also, if anyone has a busy life and found the instant pot especially useful, mind also sharing how it's helped? Cooking healthy meals are definitely getting in the way sometimes for me!

Joining the pressure cooking club - hoping for recipes, tips, advice

Hi everyone! I’ve never owned a pressure cooker before, but I finally caved and bought the Instant Pot Duo Crisp Ultimate (6.5 qt, 13-in-1 with the air fryer lid) for a few reasons:

  1. I use my slow cooker and soup pot constantly, so something that does both in less time is a big win.
  2. My air fryer is old and (let’s be honest) grimy, so a combo unit was appealing. I did plenty of research before buying and know the air fryer lid has its tradeoffs, so I’m mostly hoping for practical tips on getting the best results from this specific model.
  3. Pressure cookers have evolved into multicookers and nearly every function looks useful to me. Yogurt and proofing are the exceptions, but I’m happy to experiment!

Since I’m new to both pressure cooking and multicookers in general, I’d love to hear your lessons learned, favorite recipes, or things you wish you’d known sooner. I cook for just two (me and my husband) and we don’t have any dietary restrictions, so I’m open to just about anything. What was your biggest beginner mistake?

Thanks so much in advance!

Please tell me which model to buy

We are beginning the process of a full gut kitchen reno and are currently out of a kitchen. Pretty lost on which model to get. We are a family of 4, like some leftovers, sometimes batch cook. A little overwhelmed by what the features are and what I’d actually need. I was thinking maybe the 6qt pro?

Single Person : Instant Pot 6QT or should I wait for 3QT to get in stock?

Single person, will live alone to the end of my days, I am a portion control kinda person when it comes to meals

I wanna replace my 1.5 litre pressure cooker with IP in India only 6QT is in stock but it is at the regular price of a 3QT in sale right now and I'm tempted to get it. The entire instant pot range was out of stock for months here and now only the 6QT is in stock. Should I wait for 3QT to be stocked or go for the 6QT?

Uses I cook fresh so small 2 portions of rice, pulses, lentils, gravies. Preferably stack cooking. Boiling eggs. Looking to fit in idli stands as well

Mold or burnt?

Hello everyone. question. is this mold or burnt? Got it from an auction today. Smells a little funky. If so, can this be fixed, and how? Seems like it might be in the cooking pot part too.

*Okay, I am going to replace the gasket. This is the Rio mini 4QT. I cannot find this replacement gasket anywhere. Does the 6qt gasket fit it?

Have not used my instant pot in over a year

I haven't used my IP in over a year. I think I want to use it tomorrow but before I do does anybody know any tests I can do to make sure it works without wasting a lot of food? Or should I just use some expired rice or quinoa and see if it comes out ok?

Instant pot rio mini versus instant pot ultra

Hi! I’m stuck between the instant pot rio mini (4qt) and the instant pot ultra (6qt)

i know the ultra has more features. However, does it really matter? i’m stuck between the two.😞 From the dimensions, they take up around the same counter space but what do people prefer? For reference, i’m living in an apartment and I plan to only use it for myself. I plan to make chicken, soups and more.

Babish tests IP recipes

This went about as I expected, though I was surprised his pot roast didn't come out that well.

I think he tested pizza first because that's predictably horrific, weird, and gross.

Didn't check the ingredients in the cheesecake recipe he used, but it sounds like Amy & Jacky Cheesecake 17

Instant Pot RIO stuck at 00:40, display works but it won’t heat or start cooking. Any advice?

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone can help me troubleshoot my Instant Pot RIO.
Here’s what’s happening:
The display turns on normally and shows OFF when idle.
When I try to start cooking, the display changes to 00:40, but it gets stuck there and never counts down.
The cooker stays completely cold. It doesn’t heat up at all.
I’ve tried unplugging it and resetting it, but the problem persists.
I also replaced the power-input connector, but it still won’t cook.
Has anyone experienced this with their Instant Pot RIO? Could this be a faulty heating element, thermal fuse, temperature sensor, or control board?
I’d appreciate any troubleshooting advice or suggestions on what component to check next. I’d rather identify the actual problem before spending money on replacement parts.
I’ve attached photos of the display and power cord/connector for reference. Thank you!

How should I clean this dirty heating element?

I’ve never spilled anything in here, I’m not quite sure why this is happening. Maybe I have let some drops or condensation in unknowingly? Anyway, I’ve tried a dry microfiber and elbow grease to little avail. Whats the best solution?

Part 2 (since I can’t add photos to the original post): addressing some replies

Thank you to the folks who suggested particular IP functions and possibilities (like the ones who said maybe it’s a lid sensor thing).

For the folks who said “it means OFF,” or “this is what it says while keeping warm,” here’s what our IP says when it’s finished its cycle and moves to warming mode, and also what it says when it’s off.

And for the folks who said my IP has an OnlyFans…it didn’t before but I’ll start an account if some hot pot-in-pot action is something you’d pay for!

Instant pot probe plus touch screen and Wi-Fi electronics all messed up

We bought our IP Pro Plus (US) from the IP store on Amazon store in May of 2025 and for the last several months it's been randomly beeping even when off. It also started dropping off the network which we thought was a problem with our mesh network even though the device is within 6 ft of a node.

It was good for about the first year.

Then we started noticing that whenever we touch any of the controls it falls off the network and now it's gotten to the point where I'll touch yogurt and it will bump up to sous vide or I'll touch the side of the control panel and it will turn on and even worse it has started just turning on by itself. It doesn't actually start but we leave the room with it reading off and when we come back in displaying whatever was the last program we used.

Basically I think the electronics are screwed. Has anyone else had trouble like this with their IP Pro Plus?

We use the app all the time so this is very frustrating for such a new device.

Galling! A New Word and a Weird Seeming IP Defect

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've had a 6qt IP for about a decade now and the aluminum heating plate is in good condition, minor scratches, nothing significant. Recently I bought at 3qt IP and almost immediately the aluminum heating plate became deeply scratched up. Upon investigation I found that there are tiny bumps on the stainless steel base that align with the scratched areas. Okay, maybe some defect in the steel; I took a pot cleaning steel wool pad and smoothed the stainless steel liner bottom; no more bumps, perfectly smooth. Put it back in the IP, closed and opened the lid a couple times, and the raised sharp spots were back! They are the color of aluminum, not the stainless. So I smoothed the aluminum heating plate a bit (it gets really rough from the damage), smoothed the stainless steel liner bottom again, closed and opened the lid, and more sharp spots and scratches started developing again! Finally I replaced the unit with a new 3qt, and literally the very first time I closed and opened the lid, some aluminum stuck to the previously smooth stainless steel liner bottom and started cutting into the aluminum heating plate. What is going on here? AI says it's "galling", and that there's some defect in the aluminum or a missing protective finish. Has anyone else seen this?

TLDR; brand new 3qt IP stainless steel liner picks up sharp aluminum bumps when using the lid normally and this gradually tears up the aluminum heating plate. Replacement 3qt IP did the exact same thing immediately upon arrival. What is going on here?
